FK, we're screwed.
Need a win against Cincy to finish 10-8.

If he's as sick as he was on Saturday, I'd sure rather have him benched than on the floor unable to keep up.

Time for the Hollis, Jerelle, Vee AND Henry to all step up for Austin!

At least we know and can plan around it.

At least we know and can plan around it. That's the key. After Saturday, Mike Brey made some comment that essentially said "They were missing Freeman, but we were missing Harangody - that's basically even". Totally wrong. They had been game-planning, practicing and playing without Gody for almost 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure that up until Saturday morning Austin Freeman was a pretty big part of the Hoyas' game plan. Now we know he won't be available for tonight. Would be better if we had more than a day and a half to prep, but at least we know.

Dammit, just after I had posted my good vibes thread...
No matter. Look at how well Notre Dame has played without Harangody. This will give the rest of our team a chance to really come together, step up, and show some fight. Perhaps it will make us a better team for the rest of the season.
I thought Notre Dame had zero chance on the road against Louisville without Gody, and they took it to 2 OT's. Then they completely embarrassed both Pittsburgh and us. There can be good that comes out of these situations.
Get well soon, Austin! Anyone know where I can mail him a card?
(EDIT: Also, Cam, I feel like JT III has been preparing just in case Austin wouldn't be able to go today. JT III had only 15 minutes' notice on Saturday. Since that game, I'm sure he knew that Austin being out on Monday would be a possibility.)

Dan or any other medical professional--
Would Austin still be in the 48-hour window of the typical GI thing, or does his having had to be driven all the way to campus/hospital merit more concern?

Vee is going to have to step up. From what I've seen, I definitely think he can do it.

Without any more information, it's hard to tell. That said, coming back to campus/hospital where he could take rest (and probably have a more reliable access to necessary fluids) is a much more attractive option than traveling with the team and being in a loud, crowded arena.

I can't believe we tried to play the kid as much as we did on Saturday. One serious brain fart by JT3, I'd say.
That said, this now becomes a "gravy" win for the team - instead of Freeman, we need the VEE-man tonight!

No speculation on specifics please.
That said, viral gastroenteritis can lead pretty quickly to dehydration with fluid losses from both ends, as it were. We don't really have any indication what the real problem is, so speculating is exactly that.

here's hoping to austin gets back on the mend quickly. this is a great opportunity for the younger players and they should be excited to be playing in a big time road game. every player wearing a hoya jersey needs to step it up tonight in a nasty environment.

Any chance that this illness actually is a good thing for this team? In the eyes of the committee, we are playing this game without our leading scorer - don't they take that into consideration when seeding. If Austin comes back and we make a bit of a run, losses to ND and WVU without a healthy Free might not be counted as much against us?
If not, and we don't rally tonight, I think we're suddenly in the 6-8 seed range barring a big run in NYC. And that's IF we beat Cincy on Saturday. God, this is starting to really feel like last season. So effing depressing.

Quite honestly, I think this could be a slight blessing in disguise for following reasons:
1) Even with a fully healthy Freeman (let alone a 75% Freeman, which after the way he looked on Saturday was likely the best-case scenario), coming out of Morgantown with a road win against WVU would have been tough. Clearly Freeman is a "gamer", seeing as he didn't really let on to coaching staff until right before ND game, and he likely would have tried to go again even if he was in not much better shape.
2) Advanced notice forces III to lean on bench by necessity eat up Free's minutes. Perhaps you catch lightning in a bottle with a big step-up performance from Hollis, Jerelle, Vee and/or Henry. Even if you don't, you gain good game experience in a hostile BE road environment for the bench.
3) Perhaps even more critical is the potential that the 4 regular starters look at themselves and realize they each (indvidually and collectively) need to be that much more focused on the task at hand and realize that through a team effort, they CAN beat West Virginia!
4) Allows Austin time to focus on recuperating and on the mend before Saturday's game vs. Cincy (which will be that much more important if we don't win tonight). Having had a nasty GI virus a couple of years ago (if in fact that's what it is), he may need all that time just to start to rehydrate and feel more like himself.
5) Keeps an ill player away from healthy players to avoid further healthy bodies getting hit with it (although presumably Austin would have been exposed to the rest of team during his most contagious period, so hopefully no one else goes down!{knock wood})

Get well soon, Austin! Anyone know where I can mail him a card? Would a Hallmark card be an NCAA violation? Serious question, not joking.

Vee is going to have to step up. From what I've seen, I definitely think he can do it. WVa is an extremely hostile environment to get your first meaningful minutes. I'll be rooting, but I don't have a good feeling about this.
