Also, anytime you have a "Sharks" line, you should expect to choke in a playoff format, right? ;D

Disappointing end to the Latvia-Czech game. I was hoping they'd at least get it to a shootout. I had all kinds of kavorka jokes ready, all for naught.

Norway gives Slovakia a major scare. The minnows sure weren't going away quietly last night. Hopefully the US is ready for the Swiss to play the game of their lives today.

Canada and Russia accomplished their goals ... well, sort of. They do get to play in an advanced round in a "loser leave town match." (UN)Fortunately, it is in the quarterfinals. I'm certainly going to lose some sleep over it.

Switzerland gets a huge break as a potential US goal was deemed in after time expired. Hiller is playing the game of his life right now. I’m nervous…

Yeah, I'm nervous too. This was exactly why the Swiss were dangerous. I wish the Hiller that played against Norway and Bulgaria would show up for the 3rd period.

Zach Parise will not be denied!!!
Followed by a crazy sequence. Swiss goal/no-goal (it wasn't a goal), play continues, US goal waved off (by a pretty weak call, IMO).

I hate NBC. I couldn't watch the first two periods because I was in class. I get home in time for most of the third. They show replays of two disallowed goals, but not the goal that actually counted. Then the postgame is cut off, without warning, to show Oprah.

Man, I'm glad to see the back of that Swiss team. USA didn't play a bad game, but the Swiss played their annoying game to perfection. Even the one USA goal was a lucky break - it looked like it went off of Hiller's stick.
Now all the minnows are gone, it's time for the sharkfest to begin!

Wow. Canada is DESTROYING Russia. DESTROYING. What's going on? Russia isn't that bad. Did Canada just wake up angry this morning?

No way anyone on the planet should underestimate CANADA at HOME but it looks like they did. What the hell were Bykov/Tretiak thinking sending Nabokov back out to start the 2nd?

This is what happens when one of the best hockey teams ever assembled plays the game of their life. This is downright scary.
The Russian defense is awful, and the Russian coaching is even worse. The Nabakov error is the most obvious (I would have pulled him after the 3rd goal, just to send a message), but they're also doing a horrible job of matching lines.
The momentum from this game could take Canada all the way to the gold medal.

Let this be a lesson: you can't dick around in the qualifying round here, the way the top teams often do at the World Championships. Russia didn't play with any urgency against Slovakia, ended up losing in the SO, and that is what got them matched up with Canada in the quarters. Nobody could've expected that, but crazy stuff happens.

Ovechkin just put Gary Bettman behind the 8 ball last night, saying that he is playing in Russia in 2014 no matter what the NHL does.
The NHL has a lot of stars, but only two superstars, at least right now. Another superstar might emerge in the next few years (cough-Chicago-cough), but Crosby and Ovie will definitely still be superstars when 2014 rolls around.
What is Bettman to do, if he says no and one of those two superstars says, "Screw you I'm going anyway." (And you can bet that a number of other Russian NHLers, while not as big in name, will follow suit to play in their home country. )
This is akin to Tiger Woods defying Tim Finchem. Who do you think is going to back down?
It is impossible for me to underestimate the stupidity of Gary Bettman, but I really think Ovechkin laid down the gauntlet last night and forced his hand in a way that no other player, except Crosby, probably could.
For that, I say thank you, Alex!!

Not only will the Russian NHLers likely play for their national team, but it won't be an issue for any of the KHL talent they have on the roster now. If Bettman really takes a hard line on this, the result could be a major embarrassment for the North American teams.
