Tough loss today but is it me or 1. Do we have an awefull 2/3 zone. It seems that every time we play that zone were giving up 3's or layups so easily!
2. Doesnt this team find it difficult to come to play against a lesser opponent. I was at the PC game and I never felt like we were in jeopardy of losing but I thought we played down to them. Same here Im sick and tired of playing down to our competition. Now when we play a top team we are amped and ready to go! Coaching?? IDK.
3. Chris wright is slumping since this Feb. Is his elbow injured?
One thing I was very happy to see if Greg Monroe step up. Our guards were clearly off today our 3's were going down. It was nice to see greg get it and create, wheater it was via a nice pass or taking it to the hole. This loss is not pinned on him..
This team is just too up and down we can be a quick out in the tournament if were going to play down to our competition. Good news is we dont want to peak till march and we have the pieces to go a long way. Got to be better than this...

Monroe made some great plays - passing and finishing himself. The guards have to feed off of this by getting Monroe the ball and being ready to shoot the 3 if they are open even if they've missed the last 2-3 shots. Keep shooting! Chris just had an awful game - terrible. If Chris doesn't play well and Clark doesn't step up in his place (SEE Villanova game), this team struggles. Don't know if it is playing down to the competition as much as losing confidence in themselves if a worse team is outplaying/shooting them. I think we'll be fine - this is just another bump in the road. We have so many quality wins at this point. Hoyas just need to re-focus and stay confident in themselves. When we beat Duke and Villanova, our guards shot the ball with the feeling that every shot they took would go in. I'm confident they'll get to that point again over the last several games.

Agreed oin all points, but I really question Chris and his decision making at the end of games and not his elbow. The three he took at the end when Greg was getting what ever he wanted in the paint and us down by 1 made no sense. Austin seems much cooler under pressure than Chris to be honest. Chris is a junior now and can not let his emotions get away with him in that circumstance. I understand that he was open, but we know that Greg is a better risk inside than Chris shooting a 3, especially when you only need 2 to play with the lead. I too thought about the NCAA tournament while watching this game, I do not see the focus away from home. Do not get me wrong in that this is the first time in a long time that we actually have a home court advantage, but to have any success at the dance you must play well away as well as at home. I hope I am wrong, but we seem to be a year away.

Yeah, I would definitely like our guys to keep shooting the 3 ball. I get upset that it seems like in every 2nd half this season we stop teeing up from long-range. You have to let it fly if the other team is willing to give it to you and we finally have the guys that can punish any zone that they will see this season.
I understand the importance of getting easy shots going toward the basket, but there is no question our guys can flat out blow a game open with their shooting.

I sat directly behind the bench and Chris Wright's body language was terrible the entire game. Every time he was taken out he was sulking and stomping around on the sideline. Immature player.

It is amazing how people assign motives to body language. An equally valid interpretation could be that he was upset with how he was playing, which doesn't involve immaturity at all.

In a four-post thread, we have a complaint about our guys not shooting the three and a complaint about Wright shooting that wide open three near the end of the game. You can't both be right.

I was ok with that 3. He was WIDE open. My only complaint was that maybe he could have taken a moment to set himself or made a couple dribbles to get closer to the rim. Rutgers collapsed inside - expecting them to go to Monroe. I just wish they would have had more confidence in the 2nd half to take those open shots.

Actually they can both be right. In general we have a hard time surviving without having the 3 as a core part of our offense, either to open up the inside game, or to allow Greg to dish back out for the open shots. However, Chris's shot was the wrong one in that situation - he was shooting poorly all game, we were only one down, and we had plenty of time to get inside and try to get something there. Seemed like Chris decided that he was going to make up for his other mistakes with one big shot - but it wasn't the right shot.

At least, if this season's history is a guide, the Hoyas will bring it on Thursday night. For whatever reason this squad rises/sinks to the level of competition. I am going to wait until the end of March to judge this team. Beating very good teams in big games and having hiccups against lesser schools is a much better scenario than beating up on the weaker teams and not being able to play with the big boys.

Only a week or two ago, there was a solid consensus on this board that we would go as far as Chris took us. I haven't forgotten that, and I'll live with a wide open 3.
If the shot goes in, we're all talking about what stones Chris has and how mentally tough he is to have an off-game but still to be locked in enough to hit that shot.
Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. We never matched their intensity today, and that's my only real takeaway.

Agreed that we never matched their intensity. I immediately sensed we were coming out flat when I watched chris on defense the first two minutes of the game. He was standing upright and looked like his intensity was lacking.
This one was on chris....don't think it has anything to do with his elbow but has more to do with his heart.

The zone was not the problem. It just exposes the fact that we do not have players who want to play defense. The guys off the ball are always slow to rotate or help no matter what defense we run. When we play big-time games the effort and intensity is much better, but even then it has not been sustained for a full game.

Defense was actually this teams strength for most of the season and was definitely better than the offense for the whole begginning of the season. I don't think any problem stems from guys not wanting to play defense, because defense carried us until mid-january. I think it stems from guys getting complacent on defense and forgetting that defense wins games, not offense. Our 2-3 has always been pretty horrible though, and I think it has actually gotten better. I think another think that has probably hurt our defense is the foul situations. With Greg, Julian, and Chris (and Jason to some extent) getting in serious foul trouble that has hurt us in previous games, I think our defensive intensity has really gone down with guys too worried about staying in then game then defending their man. They need to get better though.

Before the failure at Rutgers, the raw defensive efficiency ranked 58th in the country, and the Pomeroy adjusted DE ranked 32nd. The last exceptional defensive game was against Wasington on Dec. 12. The only Big East team we really shut down was Depaul. We have had good defensive stretches in several games, but not full game efforts.
This game and the Marquette game and the South Florida game each had moments late where all we needed were a couple more stops and we couldn't get them.

We were down three when chris took that shot. Not one. The shot was fine. He was wide open. He just missed it.
