I agree that it's on a lot. I just wish that the coverage is a bit better when it is on.

Lindsay Vonn's crash probably cost Mancuso a gold medal. Mancuso had one of the fastest times on the course when she was waved off the course. Her makeup run was alot slower but that was because it was snowing all day. Bad luck for her. Today she had the fastest time by .55 seconds and finished 8th overall.
P.S. RIP CR Johnson.

Ok, so the US is competing currently or just finished competing in two events where it was in contention for gold medals. What has NBC been doing, showing a 1 hour segment on 9/11 and how Canada helped. I'm sorry, I don't want to watch 9/11 stuff when I turn on the Olympics. I remember it, everyone I'm watching the Games with lived through it. NBC, show me olympics, not footage of a terrible event.

I thought the 9/11 story was great -- but I couldn't believe it was an hour long in the midst of sports.

What doesn't suck? Giant. inflatable. beavers. That was like shopping at Cabelas while you're on LSD.

Ok, so after a rough and tragic start, I thought these Winter Games actually turned out pretty awesome. 0. Hockey 1. The U.S. won the medal count for the first time in generations. 2. Apollo Ohno became the most decorated U.S. winter olypian (and got jobbed on that last DQ). 3. Vonn, Bode, and the U.S. Alpine team were awesome. 4. Likewise for White and the U.S. snowboarding team (including, actually, Jacobellis' heart-wrenching 2nd-consequtive boardercross fail). 5. The fourman U.S. bobsled team proving that fat, bald dudes can be champions in something other than golf, bowling, and poker. 6. Evan Lysecheck, the Chinese couple who won gold, and Canadian who got bronze after her mom died, and other good ice skating stuff. 7. The ascendency of curling and previously-unknown hotness of its female competitors. 8. The Canadians poking fun at themselves in the closing ceremonies re: the technical difficulties in the opening. Can you see China, Russia, or heck, even the U.S. doing that? So, pretty awesome games. Unless you live in Russia: m.apnews.com/ap/db_44898/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=qeJ7vVzX

What doesn't suck? Giant. inflatable. beavers. That entire sequence was awesome. The Maple Leaf Forever and The Hockey Theme are both amazing songs. Plus you had a mass hockey fight, a massive table hockey game, and dancing Mounties. Plus the aforementioned (and always enjoyable) giant inflatable beavers. The torch lighting gag at the beginning was also great. It was a perfect bookends on the Olympics - start with the humiliating "erectile dysfunction" and end with a superbly executed satire of the incident.

So question, I don't know where I heard it but I'm sure I could find some internet link. But the american "stars", Vonn, White, Bode Miller, Seth Wescott, and Apolo Ohono actually did not train with the US Teams and coaches. All of those athletes hired their own coaches/training staffs for the Olympics.
I wonder what this says about the USOC (Olympic Comitte) and the coaches they have. Obviously they are world class coaches/former athletes but why is it that our stars/top performers did not utilize them? I know that Shaun White had his own private half-pipe built for him (and all their other sponsored athletes) by Red Bull so you can't fault him for passing up that opportunity but I'm not sure what is up with the rest.

It's a different model, Hometown.
Everyone has their preference in a coach/people they like to train with, etc. Team USA generally provides some kind of facility and coaches for the folks who need funding. It's not necessarily that the US Coaches are or aren't good, but those folks with funding and money can train where and when they please. If Vonn just likes someone else, or wants to train with her friend/rival, she can.
In a different style of system, it's dictated. But it may not get the best results. There's no "best coach" out there. For a lot of people, it's a matter of fit.
