Padding on the pole doesn't help when you're going 90 mph. Exactly - padding would not have made a difference. In fact, even if the beams weren't there, he'd be in bad shape flying off the track at 70-80 mph. Real issue is not having a higher wall, but as was posted, doesn't seem common for competitors to fly off the track.

The Olympics always suck. All of a sudden I'm supposed to care about skiing and ice dancing because Visa and Coca Cola have put on a big show. Gimme a break. As soon as the wife went to bed, flipped right to WVU-Pitt. De gustibus non est disputandum. Personally, I love to watch the skiing event, especially the Downhill! Nothing more exciting than watching the world's best skiers flying down the mountain! Single most exciting event in the Olympics -- summer or winter. I love the mogul skiing too. I used to love skiing moguls, but I have old man knees now. Except that it has the one element that I hate most in any and all sports: judging. But it's still cool to watch. Those guys and girls must have titanium knees.

Mogul Skiing would be so much better if you got rid of the jumps (because the judging is awful) and got rid of the judging period and just raced it on time. After all, isn't the best style the style that gets you down the mountain fastest?
You could also leave the jumps in and have established levels of difficulty and then have them be time deductions -- i.e. you subtract 1 second from the time for X and 2 seconds for Y. But no form judging, please.

Still dig the short track speed skating... mostly because someone bites it almost every race and it suits my short attention span. Definitely a shame about the luger. Though, to be honest, when you're a luger, is this really that surprising? I remember the first time I saw skeleton thinking that somehow luge wasn't crazy enough?

I have to say, I like that fact that after the basketball game there is still something worth watching while I'm drinking in my apartment. And I love me some short track. Cannot wait for the downhill either.

Bob Costas should probably leave the Howard Fineman School of Hair Dye. One thing I hate about the Winter Olympics is the announcers. In most cases, they are retired from the particular sport they're covering and find it necessary to discuss how one minor infraction will ruin someone's Olympic hopes and other crap. Luge is usually pretty bad like this.
Even worse is that there is no middle ground between these specialists and the Collingsworth types.

The women's moguls was exactly like individual sports should be.
As soon as you got to the real medal contenders, someone posted a monster score and everyone after had to stretch themselves for any hop at a medal. No safe runs there -- that was awesome.

Anyone know why there was so little hype around the Olympics this year? I saw few commercials or print ads.

Wasn't he a character in "Trading Places"?

Hopefully a sign of things to come for the US ski team. An old acquaintance is skiing tomorrow in the downhill. At the tender age of 13, he was already training and preparing for this kind of competition on Whiteface Mountain. If he's anything like his brother, he'll ski like a bat out of hell and will be highly entertaining to watch if he's on his game. Comes from a good family that runs an inn in Lake Placid.

Downhill is perhaps the original X-Game.
Luge too obviously. And ski jumping!
Don't forget bobsled, and, oh yeah, hockey.
Of course, there is always Figure Skating pairs and Ice Dancing.
Some of those crotch lifts look a tad exterme.

Kinda disappointed that the US men's curling team doesn't look like they're having a smoke outside their northern Minnesota bar like the 2002 team. That team was epic.

Yeah, but you're kind of an idiot, aren't you?
I defy anyone to watch a full match and tell me they don't get completely sucked in.
