A much better scenario is that the Hoyas defeat Villanova for the National Title, thus a) making it so that while we still have to watch reminders of 85 forever, we now get a reminder of 2010 and b) making the basketball schools' cache extremely strong.

Sad to say it, but I actually believe Syracuse is the most likely candidate for the Big 10 after Texas. Yeah their football stinks right now, but it's not always been that way. And besides, it's a question of $$$, and the Big 10 Network specifically.
Syracuse basketball would definitely get the Big 10 Network added to cable packages in NYC and the rest of the state, definitely more so than Rutgers football. Pitt accomplishes nothing, and while Missouri could get more TV sets in St Louis and KC, I've heard the Big 10 Network is already carried in many parts of the state.

How is the revenue in the Big East currently split? I read on some other message board that the BCS money is only split between the football schools, but the TV contracts-- which are for football and basketball-- are split between everybody. Is this correct?
Assuming the basketball schools would be willing to take less money-- that is, not share in the football TV revenue-- would there be any reason for the football schools to leave? Seems like they'd get have and eat their cake.
Such a scenario also begs the question of whether the basketball schools could get more money in their own eight-team league rather than split the bigger Big East pot among 16 schools.

In upstate NY & Syracuse, local sentiment is strongly opposed to a move, as is Boeheim. Not sure how much that would factor in...

Are additional schools really needed to increase coverage of the B10 network. I mean I get the B10 network in DC on FIOS and that's a good 3hrs from the closest b10 school.

Texas would be a grand slam for the Big 10. It would make it a true national super conference in football, putting on the same plane as the SEC and with its access to bigger media markets.

I'm not a Jesuit, but it is an awful, atrocious idea. It would be extraordinarily difficult to keep our team at the level it is, and I also think we'd risk losing Thompson to another college. JTIII wanted to coach at the highest level -- the A-10 ain't it.

Understand, the current plan for the B10 is Texas, Texas A & M and Missouri. BB would be played like the Pac10, teams would play in pairs each weekend, i.e, Thursday - Saturday schedule for each home market for the men and Friday-Sunday for the women..

Is this because the Texas state government won't let Texas hang A&M out to dry in whatever diminished midwestern conference is left over? I've heard that theory. But why wouldn't they also try to protect Texas Tech?

They have never been a big supporter of Tech. If the B10 gets Texas, they need another school down there to pair up traverl for non-football events. The facilities at A & M are much better than at Tech, and Texas's athletic complex is one of the best in the country

Where are you getting this heretofore unbroken story? I haven't seen this written anywhere. After reading the "12:19 post," I searched for similar rumors from credible sources. The Austin American-Statesman and the St. Louis Post Dispatch don't have any similar information posted, even from their bloggers. Nor can I find any similar story on the Texas blogs I read. Sounds like this story may have come from the same "source" as the initial Pitt rumor.

If the Big east blew up or was severely downgraded in whatever scenario it might actually make sense for Gtwn to ask to join the ACC ex football. I think they'd be lucky/love to have us except for possibly Umd(and who really cares about them). We'd have plenty of natural rivals and it would be an upgrade for the non football sports. Geographically its ok too.
Don't think it will ever happen but its fun to speculate.
Re: the ivy idea, I can see the advantages for Gtwn. For the ivies there would be some advantages i guess to the dc presence, though i'm not sure its compelling-i guess it would remain a possibility
other possubilities like a weakened big east or some catholic conf seem like damage control at best
Losing Pitt by itself; however, if that's all that happens really wouldn't hurt us very much--i doubt the fball schools would look to blow up the successful basketball setup, because they'd be pretty much in damage control mode too.

Adam Rittenberg who covers the B10 for ESPN had a podcast a couple a weeks ago about Missouri joining the B10 and one this week about Texas joining and also noted that Texas A &M would have to come along with Texas.
