Hopkins will be a good college player. I have watched him play in over 10 games, and most being big games in the WCAC playoffs. He performed well under pressure every time.
The bigger thing here is for Georgetown to keep a tight grip on the local guys. In '06 we nabbed the two best players in the area in Wright and Freeman. In '07 we got the best player in the DC area in Jason Clark. In 2008 and 2009 we got zero kids from the WCAC. That is unacceptable IMO. We let guys like Kendall Marshal, Josh Selby, and Tyler Thorton get away. The more WCAC kids that have succesful careers at Georgetown, will only lead to more talent coming in down the line.

we got the best PG in the AREA...just watch...Markel will have a better college career than the wcac kids marshal and thorton.....selby's a bmore kid and an undersized 2 guard (who will be good dont get me wrong). The only one we "let get away" was thorton but honestly like i said i think we ended up with the better guard in Starks.
i definitely agree that we need to keep a stranglehold on the DC area though....but taking a WCAC kid just cuz he's a WCAC kid doesn't make ANY sense to me...we're gona take the best players we can get...regardless of where they play. The point is we have priorities over mikael at this point if it plays out that we get him eventually then so be it!

From ZagsBlog on Hopkins:
"Another player to watch on Team Takeover is 6-9, 210-pound forward Mikael Hopkins of DeMatha, who has offers from Syracuse, Texas, Kansas, West Virginia, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Georgetown and Maryland. Asked who was working the hardest, Stevens said, 'Syracuse right now.'
(Syracuse has one scholarship left for 2011 and hopes to land either Hopkins, Rakeem Christmas or Anthony Davis.)
'[Hopkins] has a chance to be a a pro,' Stevens said. 'If he gets stonger and keeps working, he’ll have the opportunity to play at the highest level.'
Stevens said Hopkins will cut his list to five in August and then take official visits."

Rumors are that he's all but done to Syracuse, as that was his dream school and they finally offered him a scholarship.
We'll see.

Well, if they landed Hopkins and that took them out of the Christmas derby, I guess that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I guess I am bias to WCAC guys because it is the best high school basketball league in the country. I think kids that can perform at a high level in the conference, will transition easily to the college level. There is something to be said about a kid playing well against a Gonzaga/Dematha and their crowd, on a Tuesday night in front of 5,000 people at Catholic U. I don't know how it compares to when IAC power houses GP and Landon get together for 8 white guys to play hoops. Starks may have a better college career than those kids, and I hope he does, but he will be the exception not the rule. So yes, I say target kids performing well in the WCAC.

Last time I checked-none of the other bigs Georgetown is recruiting play in the IAC or WCAC--so why this is brought up in regards to who people like more then Hopkins is irrelevant--and they also happen to be guys who have taken it to him head to head--in AAU/Camp competition--so that should be taken into account. If a player is better then another--it doesn't matter if he's "local" or not--go after them.

Hoyas make his top 10, according to Scout:
Maryland, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Texas, Kansas, Ohio State, Syracuse, Miami and West Virginia.

I heard he was narrowing his list tonight, figured it'd be to a smaller number than 10.

EvanDanielscout writes UMD, Gtown, VT, & Pitt will get unofficials & the other 6 will fight for the 5 officials.

Once an afterthought recruit; he may return to the forefront. May be too late.

The kid will bang. He's a takeover guy. A legit 6'9 w/a faceup game. Needs more fire supposedly. I agree with hardwood, GU could do worse. GU has done worse.

I agree as well. Not wild about some of the things I've read about Hopkins as far as his willingness to play tough/physical. But at this point I don't think we can afford to pass on a guy with talent because of that. Sure a guy like Christmas would be more of a priority, but given the state of our recruiting I don't think we're in position to turn down a local big guy who can play. If we can land him do it and take your chances. If we pass on him, good chance we're waiting til spring and hoping that an Abraham type pops up or else looking for another Benimon type.

I've seen him play an awful lot, and he's overrated.
However, if he ever got the fire, he could be a good player in college and a good fit in Georgetown's offense.
Agree with RB, if he wants to come and with so many schollies available, take him and coach him up if he wants to come. Was really hoping for Christmas, but it's time to move on and we could do a whole lot worse than Hopkins and it doesn't hurt that he's a DeMatha guy.
And in reality, it seems like we're going to need all the size we can get.
