All I'm saying is, I'll take a loud, boistrerous crowd when the game is close early in the game over one at the end when the game has been basically decided.

Wouldn't it be best to have a loud, boisterous crowd for the entire length of the game?
I'm sick of people settling for mediocrity, its not like we have to choose between times for the crowd to be loud. We can fix problems that we have so that the crowd can be loud all the time. That's the way it should be at a college basketball game and I won't be happy till it is that way.

Seriously Jimmy, are you a Dodgers fan? "But if we don't leave in the 7th inning we'll get stuck in traffic!!!" Or even worse, a Lakers fan?

You don't want to move the young alums (including myself), who rarely contribute anything to the games but fill some courtside seats, but you want to move the band? The young alums are spotted sitting down half the game, while the band stands, cheers, and heckles the entire game. Not just when the ball is in play, the ENTIRE game. Having spent 4 years going to home games in the student section next to the band, I feel moving the band would be detrimental. There was a lot of communication between the band and students in my time, with the band leading us in the student section in call and response cheers. Which brings me to my second point . . You're critical of the band not not contributing anything (oh, besides the hours of "pep" music) because they don't lead YOU in cheers. Hey buddy, how about you request the help of the CHEERLEADERS to lead you in cheers. HENCE THE NAME! I suspect the reason the band may not be as active in leading cheers as you'd like is because they a) don't want to step on the cheerleaders toes, and b) i think they have to concentrate on coordinating music with timeouts. Not sure but just my thoughts. JohnJacques- then let's move the young alums, replace them with the band and/or students. Also the problem is not starting the cheers- it's getting the whole section involved and sustaining them. I'm tired of starting chants, either in the back or front, and not having anyone join in, or having the same chant start in a different part of the student section. The Cheerleaders really have nothing to do with this, despite their name.

Why move the young alums... let's move the press and give them seats based on a performance basis. Barker has earned his this year, but the others still have some work to do.

If a cheerleader throws me a tshirt, I'll don their uniform and lead cheers. No joke. I lead cheers at my school. I'd love to. And I'd even stay to the end.
Speaking of which, if any of you front row hoodlums get bored on Tuesday and want to yell at HS kids...walk up the street to the Washington International School. We're trying to run those punks out of their gym. ;D

JohnJacques- then let's move the young alums, replace them with the band and/or students. start in a different part of the student section. Not a valid suggestion for two reasons. 1. The band needs to be on the same side of court as the students. If they are on opposite sides they will never coordinate w/ each other. 2. Media sets up on the same side as young alums. They take half of the area behind the basket. Wouldn't make sense to have a small diluted student section on that side (maybe 15 rows). Plus I don't think you want students right next to media.

Why do we need that massive media area? Is THAT standard for most schools? Why can't they be set up behind the students somewhere?

It seems like the media area is never full. Seems like the most spacious seating at MCI.

What's the point of it? Who sits there? Rich is next to the scorer's table...ESPN is across the court...I find it hard to believe the newspaper needs THAT much space...

I'm tired of starting chants, either in the back or front, and not having anyone join in, or having the same chant start in a different part of the student section. I agree, the same cheer started in different places at the same time is ridiculously frustrating. I can tell you that the band joins in with every cheer and starts a bunch too. However, there's not a whole lot we can do if two different cheers are going on at the same time. The same would happen if there were students sitting where we are. People just need to listen more to each other in the different sections.

Isn't this a function of the b-ball configuration for Wiz' games? Is MCI going to move all those seats just for us?

I'm tired of starting chants, either in the back or front, and not having anyone join in, or having the same chant start in a different part of the student section. The Cheerleaders really have nothing to do with this, despite their name. Let's recap: You think the band is ineffective and that cheerleaders have no role in rallying our fanbase. Interesting perspective. You don't think that if the cheerleaders took a proactive role in organizing our student section that it could eliminate the problems of multiple cheers and lack of coordination? Maybe the band and cheerleaders are not collectively agressive enough to contribute to the intensity of the student section at MCI. If that's the case, both organizations need to address that issue. Would you say that when the band and/or cheerleaders do their thing it is a step down in intensity and subdues the student section rather than doing the exact oposite?

The cheerleaders need to stop doing BS cheers that the student section will never follow. They need to keep it basic if they are ever going to lead any cheers (Let's Go Hoyas, Defense). They are completely useless in terms of leading cheers in the student section or anywhere else. Do NFL cheerleaders lead cheers?
What we need is like 8 male cheerleaders with megaphones leading simple unified cheers around the arena.

Used to have a mixed squad of male/female cheerleaders, they were better than the current crop, I won't say that they were good, but they were better.
I just think its tough to recruit male cheerleaders unless you have a competitive cheer squad or give scholarships, which GU does not do.
