1. The Wardrobe Malfunction: Does anybody know what happened with the girls sitting in the second row of the student section near the band? They were crazy great fans the whole game, then with about 3 minutes to go in the game it looked like one of them had her short torn off and three of them went running out.
2. Fan of the Game: Was tonight's fan of the game contest completely fixed? Fan #3 was sitting in section 110 until a couple minutes before the contest. Then he went over to the other side of the court, down near the front. Fan #1 (old guy holding an 84 Hoyas shirt) CLEARLY got the most applause but they gave the prize to Fan #3. And tonight's gift pack had an old school Hoyas uniform in it.
On any other night Fan #3's outfit would have won...he had a sweet purple pimp costume on...but fan #1 had twice as much applause. Was it fixed? Is it always fixed? Has my whole life been a waste?

1. Yes, they were very good fans, and no, I do not know what happened to them.
2. Call me crazy, but that might have been lichoya as fan #1. And yes he was robbed. He was going absolutely crazy. I don't think it was fixed though, so don't worry, you are still the true FOTG.

Who runs this thing? Didn't even the band give it up for No. 1?

Was it fixed? Is it always fixed? Has my whole life been a waste? Yeah, those girls were sitting directly in front of me. It wasn't so much the same group of girls--more of a Esherick-style rotation. A lot of them did leave with three minutes to go, but not for any particular reason other than bad fans leave early--they weren't paying attention at all. In fact, for most of the second half three of them and this other guy took turns dry humping. Seriously unpleasant to sit behind them--they kept piling folks in and eventually were sitting two deep the whole way down the row. And constantly elbowing me. The one you're talking about didn't have her shirt torn off. She had one of those super-low cut sweater/shirt things a la Jennifer Beals in "Flashdance". The REAL wardrobe malfunction was the hyper-wedgies most of them were getting from the combo of too-small thong and too baggy sweatpants. Plumbers butt--not attractive on women. (EDIT: CAHoya--either we're talking about different sets of girls, or there's some serious difference of opinion here. Probably the former, since we sit on opposite sides of our rows and its unlikely we'd have noticed the same people. But if you'd sat next to the ones I did, you'd want to shoot yourself. And yeah, Fan #1 totally got jobbed. When was the last time the student section favorite didn't win?)

Just fyi FL, the last time the student section favorite didn't win was jeff green's mom.
Since there seems to be discussion brewing on how to enchance the crowd noise, fan experience, etc., I was wondering what people thought about my suggestion to move the band. It would make the student presence near the floor more substantial, and possibly help to coordinate cheering as we would be a more cohesive mass and cheers from the front might carry to all sides of the student section. We could even lower the student section, as previously discussed, so it wouldn't stretch as high and hopefully more fans would feel impelled to get rowdy and vocal.
As for the band's new position. If we moved them to the side or even back, we could still hear them. Maybe a move to the other side of the basket could work? I don't want to move the young alums, but there's got to be a better spot for the band, where they can still play a role in the game, yet not take up valuable courtside, student section space.
The band doesn't really contribute much right now, as I see it, to warrant the space up front. They don't really lead us in any cheers; in fact, the middle school band for the UConn game was much more of a presence than they were- I'm being totally serious when I say that.
Any thoughts?

I think the band should still be somewhat close but I think you have a great idea here. That woud be great for student seating to increase the amount of students up front. Also, let's get rid of the couch because that takes away a ton of front row seating.

Just fyi FL, the last time the student section favorite didn't win was jeff green's mom. Touche (too-shay) Also, I'm watching the tape of the game right now. If some of the current students have never sat down and watched a tape of a home game--especially one with a big crowd that should be sounding decible-splitting--you should sometime, just to get an idea of how the TV "picks up" the student section, both sound and looks. I'll tell you one thing, the band you can hear, the students--not so much. It's very inconsistent--you hear sometimes faintly sometimes louder the cheering, but the constant noise (ooooooooooooooooooh) is missing. I realize the microphones can be put in different places and MCI is a sound death trap, but it's worth exploring options more focused on how we can keep the students themselves louder longer--with or without moving them by the band. This has been the case since I started going to GU. (as I wrote that, Jeff Green just made that block on the breakaway...what do you think about that, Fred?)

I've been an advocate of the band idea for a while. If we could rotate them off a little to the side, ceding that section to the students, and making the noise a little less localized, it would be a win-win. One issue is that I don't think that non-student ticket holders will want to sit next to the band. On one hand, screw 'em. But on the other, it's a problem and I don't know that the school would be willing to do this. Someone should raise it though, because I really believe it would pump up the atmosphere a little more.

I know for U of Minnesota Hockey games, they put the band in the back of the student section (which is the area behind the goal)-it works pretty well for the games (those are some of the best, loudest student sections I've been in.

As a band alumnus, I must say it was always nice to be courtside. Coach Thompson liked it that way when we were there, and it was the same way at other schools, too. So, I wouldn't be an advocate of moving them so much as compressing them. That, to me, is good for everyone involved...the band sounds better now than when I was there...

I already responded on another thread, but I figured I should defend the band here too. As a four year member of the band I take huge offense to all of this. At some games, we almost outnumber the student section, especially before this season. I've gone to 99% of the home games the last four years and have gone crazy every single one. I'm one of the first people to start the you you you chant in the entire student section. I specifically stand near the aisle so that with every play I can tackle the guy in front of me. I can't believe you would say that that's not as rowdy as the guys that sit across from me in the student section holding a beer and sometimes yelling profanities. We go to every football game. We go to every women's basketball game. We go to every men's game leaving 2 hours before the game. I have never had a traditional spring break trip because the school sends me to the big east tournament the day of the Hoyas game and then send us back to campus as soon as they lose (which for the last couple years has been a pretty quick turnaround). Most bands get to stay for the entire tournament. And at the UConn game, the only reason the middle school band was there was because the school wouldn't open up the dorms for us to move back early. Please don't question the loyalty of the band. If you were really that loyal and rowdy you would get to the game early enough to be in the front like 007.
