There is apparently talk of making a sequel to Bull Durham. I would just like to go on record in saying this is the worst idea ever. Dear Hollywood, please stop ruining things I love.

Actually, making a sequel to 'Slap Shot' was the worst idea ever, but this is up there.
For the first time in my life, I agree with Bill Simmons on something...and I give him full credit for positing the theory, which I'm paraphrasing here:
The first 'Bull Durham' actually wasn't that good. At least, not as good as people remember. Like 'Jerry McGuire' (though not quite as bad as that) it was really a chick flick disguised as a sports movie.
Sports Guy was right on that one. (But they still shouldn't make a sequel.)

Major League, the Natural, and Field of Dreams were all superior baseball movies.

Bull Durham was great, while FOD is a catharsis for your daddy issues and the Natural completely sold out its source material. As for Major League, well, ok you got me there.

I will concede your points on FOD and the Natural. Tim Robbins still threw like a girl. That being said, Major League might just be the best sports movie ever made. I will listen to arguments for Slap Shot or Caddyshack, and maybe the Hustler (haven't seen it), Rocky or Hoosiers, but Bull Durham?

Eight Men Out is the best baseball movie ever made, though.

Eight Men Out was great. In terms of favorite sports movies (not best - that's too subjective for me), I want to throw some love to The Longest Yard. Not the stupid Adam Sandler version, the original. There's nothing better than Jaws (Richard Kiel) looking down at a guard and yelling "I think I broke his EDITED neck." Had lots of real football players disguised as guards and prisoners, as well, including the legendary Ray Nitschke.

I'm with Jack on the best baseball movie, I think. I do like The Natural, but will admit to only seeing the movie, so I don't know about betraying the source material. Major League is great, but just a little too goofy to be the best. For football, The Longest Yard is very good, but I would go with North Dallas Forty as one of the best. I also liked Friday Night Lights very much. There is no basketball movie better than Hoosiers. For hockey, I think Slap Shot is the best, but Miracle was obviously out-frickin-standing, and even Mystery Alaska was pretty good, so I can't complain if anyone likes those better. (Of course, true hockey fans all love "Hockey Night," but no one's ever seen that).

Not a single mention of the top two sports movies ever made: Space Jam, which is a close second to Air Bud.

- I also agree with Jack that Eight Men Out is the best baseball movie I've seen. I also like Bang the Drum Slowly, although it's badly dated, and Robert DeNiro really throws like a girl. - I finally read The Natural earlier this year. It is much, much better than the movie; highly recommended.

Miracle and Le Mans (the old Steve McQueen film) also deserve mentions as top-notch sports movies.
I'd also like to second the nominations of Slap Shot, Caddyshack, and Major League.

To drag this down into the dregs of TV, one really quality episode of a show that I didn't love was the X-Files episode called "The Unnatural" that (I believe) was written by David Duchovny.
I'd also like to point out that the brief basketball scene in Escape from LA is one of the most undeniably ludicrous 5 minutes ever put on film. I'd also like to put forward Happy Gilmore.
But Field of Dreams wins on this list.

I'll second that. I wasn't a big fan of the X-Files (I'm not a big fan of paranormal stuff), but for some reason I've seen that episode multiple times, and I'd watch it again.

The Natural is an incredibly depressing book based on the idea that we never learn from our mistakes. The movie is fantastic if you divorce it from the book, since it basically has the exact opposite theme. Field of Dreams is fantastic, but yeah, it's not 100% about baseball. I think Hoosiers is probably the best totally sports sports movie that's not a comedy.

Good sports movies not mentioned so far: White Men Can't Jump, Prefontaine, Hoop Dreams, The Hurricane, Karate Kid, He Got Game, Remember the Titans, Dodgeball, Blades of Glory, A Leage of their Own (come on, admit it)
Bad sports movies not yet mentioned: Balls of Fury, Semi-Pro, Blue Chips
