Good sports movies not mentioned so far: White Men Can't Jump, Prefontaine, Hoop Dreams, The Hurricane, Karate Kid, He Got Game, Remember the Titans, Dodgeball, Blades of Glory, A Leage of their Own (come on, admit it) Bad sports movies not yet mentioned: Balls of Fury, Semi-Pro, Blue Chips You didn't like Blue Chips? C'mon, that's Nick Nolte and Al Bundy at their finest. Plus, it's always fun to see how many of the real basketball players you can name during the game sequences.

I put League of their Own under "Good" and Blue Chips under "Bad" since I didn't want a category for "mediocre depending on my mood." I guess it does have Anfernee Hardaway in it, which has to count for something too.

Basketball seems to do well -- White Men Can't Jump, Hoop Dreams, He Got Game all good, and I actually liked Blue Chips a bit.

Let's not all forget the unequalled travesty that is Juwanna Mann.

No love for Tin Cup or Days of Thunder? Admit it, most of us, if we switched over to any of these movies on TNT/TBS/FX/etc. on a Saturday afternoon would probably sit there and watch the rest of the movie.

"Starting defense! Place at the table!" No, no, no, no, no, for the love of God, no! (OK, Kristy Swanson, yes! But otherwise...NO)

Wow this got off topic. In agreement: Eight Men Out. Hands Down. The Natural, up there. Way better than the second, much later viewing of FOD. The one that's missing (speaking of chick flicks) that surprises: For the Love of the Game. Bang the Drum Slowly also made me cry. That is all.

There we go! I'm amazed that took so long. Also, I found We Are Marshall pretty decent. It was brutally formulaic, but a nice afternoon at the theater anyway.

How have we missed Victory? Sly Stallone, the goalie. Priceless.
As an aside, I actually witnessed the last bicycle kick goal scored by Pele in competition vs. the Miami Toros at Yankee Stadium.

Austin, in total agreement. The Program deserves to be in the conversation with some of the other movies mentioned. No it wasn't perfect but it had the indomitable James Caan and Omar Epps, along with a smoking hot halle berry (swanson? please - she is a disaster).
Kill the quarterback...hit the tight end so hard, his girlfriend dies...kill everyone...

Football = better movies, baseball = better books. That is pretty much all you need to know about the two sports.

Rudy? I've tried three times and can't get past the first half hour. Incredibly boring.

For the life of me I don't understand why people consider Caddyshack a sports movie. Golf is FAR more ancillary to the point of that movie than baseball was to Bull Durham.

Rudy? I've tried three times and can't get past the first half hour. Incredibly boring. That's too bad because the last half hour is quite good. Worth the slow begining. Gets me every time, and I'm no Irish fan.

Gets me every time, and I'm no Irish fan. And you can make it a drinking game: Every time you want to punch Rudy in his little jaw Hobbit jaw, take a shot. Then, you pass out and wake up by the final 20 minutes, which are actually good.

It really is the quintessential ND fan story. Draw your own conclusions.

Since I brought up Rudy in the this discussion... A former neighbor of mine played O line for ND while Danny Ruettiger (Rudy) was on the squad. Said he was a complete a-hole.
