Since I brought up Rudy in the this discussion... A former neighbor of mine played O line for ND while Danny Ruettiger (Rudy) was on the squad. Said he was a complete a-hole. Well that makes sense. As an offensive lineman who probably didn't want to go 100% in practice, you would not like an all-Monday down lineman trying to prove himself on the practice D at your expense, would you? But it made for a good story.

Filming campus scenes at Duke automatically disqualifies The Program.

2 great basketball movies I didn't see listed. Dr. J and Jonathon Winters in The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh and Gable Kaplan in Fastbreak.

I think I've made it pretty obvious over the years how much I dislike Notre Dame, but 'Rudy' was a great movie, there's no denying it. It suffers just a little bit from being made after movies like Rocky (or even The Karate Kid), but it's still a great movie. Come to think of it, how is it that we have not yet nominated Rocky as one of the greatest sports movies ever? Man, there's a whole SLEW of boxing movies to choose from. My favorite, of course, being 'The Great White Hype.'

Rocky IV. If a movie ends the Cold War, it's the best sports movie ever.

I was watching the original the other day and was astounded how good the dialogue was.

I was watching the original the other day and was astounded how good the dialogue was. Rocky was Sylvester Stallone's labor of love, there is no question about it. The fact that he's done shoite since then (with one or two minor exceptions, but that's just because I like Judge Dredd ) should not detract from the overall awesomeness of that movie in every regard. Kind of like Jon Favreau, now that I think about it. Swingers was his masterpiece, but I can't name a single thing since then that he's written, directed or starred in that was remotely watchable (except maybe his stint on The Sopranos). I haven't seen Iron Man yet though. You could throw Matt Damon...excuse, me, MATT DAMON!!! in there too if you want, except that I don't think his "masterpiece" was all that great and I think he's done better things since. Of course, I have now strayed so far afield from Bando's original premise that I should probably shut up. No more digressions, I apologize. DO NOT MAKE A SEQUEL TO BULL DURHAM!

OK, one more thing, but I promise this is not a digression.
Does anyone else think of the idea of a Bull Durham sequel and envision Kevin Costner desperately trying to talk Susan Sarandon and/or Tim Robbins into it, much in the same way that Corey Haim was desperately trying to talk Corey Feldman into the 'Lost Boys' sequel?
Me, I can sort of picture him sleeping on their couch in a Kangol cap, being all obnoxious, always wanting to talk about the old days when they were stars, getting into fights and distracting them from their important political causes until they agree to do the sequel with him.
It probably does not speak well of me that I spend time thinking of these types of things.

Distracting Robbins and Sarandon from their "important political causes" might just be a good enough reason to make a sequel. Anything that keeps Hollywood stars from being obnoxious about politics is a good thing in my book.

Someone else liked Judge Dredd? I don't know if I like it, but every time it is on TNT on a Saturday, I'm watching it. I have no clue why.

According to my rudimentary arithmetic skills, Rocky had to be 60 (given that he had to be late 20's when he first fought Creed) by the time he fought in Rocky Balboa.
Talk about willing suspension of disbelief.

Iron Man was pretty spectacular, and I liked "Elf", and "Zathura" was ok if you're 9.

I think there might have been some moral lessons in Rocky V, but I'm not sure.

While we're talking about sequels, much love has rightfully been given to Major League. As sports comedies go, it is the best film of the genre.
Remember what happened when they tried to make a sequel? It was an abomination. I mean really bad. Its so bad that when i see it on TV i change the channel as quickly as is humanly possible DESPITE the fact that my grandfather makes a glorious 3 second appearance in it. The movie is just too brutal to endure.
If the sequel to Major League (an undisputed classic) was bad, imagine what a Bull Durham sequel will look like.
and just to get everyone thinking, I will close with two words: Caddyshack II

Does anyone remember the sequel to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? The one WITHOUT Newman or Redford? How about JAWS 2, 3, 4, 5.... none of which were directed by Spielberg?

Slapshot over Major League? Really?
Jobu does not like that kind of talk.
