today during a segment about the nfl combine, big john stated the current hoya squad had too many “choir boys,” other than pat, that allowed teams to “punch them in the mouth” instead being the team doing the punching.
Thoughts?

man he really does like to push their buttons.
but I agree, and don't think I'd have it any other way, These Choir boys made it to the final four.

My thought is that as a sports radio host, Big John is an excellent basketball coach.

Eh...you win by executing on offense and continuing to play suffocating defense. Talent wins in the end. I'm sure other teams don't like to see our defense in the building.
How exactly were we punching teams in the mouth last year on the way to the final four? Jeff Green? Not quite.
Jessie and Pat are pretty tough and Tyler if he gets some run is tough.
We're fine...we just need to play smarter on offense and hit shots. Look at our 3 point shooting in our 4 losses...all around the 20% mark. We have no chance against a good team if we shoot 4-22 from 3.
I've seen real progress the past two games on offense. Much better ball movement.
JTIII's teams peak at the end...let's trust the man again...

I'd like another player like Pat who is willing to stand up for his teammates in every situation. I love Pat's enthusiasm and his loyalty to his teammates and coaches. Tyler shows the same spirit, but doesn't get enough minutes to guarantee that there will always be at least one "tough guy" on the floor at all times.

I kind of agree with Big John. If the team did a little more "punching" last year we may have gone beyond the FF. The 2nd half of Providence showed what "punching" can do.

"Punch in the mouth" is a term that is used more to describe defense, and I would say that our defense is much better than it was last year (even though we are undersized at the 3 and 4 in our starting lineup).
Although I'm sure Big John had similar complaints last year and I'm not saying he's wrong but it looks like he's trying to light a fire under our team*
*or a better analogy may be fanning the fire, I think that fire was already sparked

Choir boys or not, this team arises the ire of opposing fans. From Morgantown to Syracuse to Providence, the Hoyas of today bring out the worst in classless fans. All it takes is a shoosh from Pat or a chest-beat from Roy and fans are booing our squad. People are scared when Georgetown comes to town, and this feeling will only increase in coming years. Paranoia is on the rise...and that's the best punch in the mouth there is.

I totally agree...if you saw how Big John's teams played then you would know we were always the aggressors, nothing to hurt anyone, but you know when you were playing Georgetown you were in for it big time...I know exactly what he means by this...the word "TOUGH" sums it all up! LETS GO HOYAS!!!
He only cares and he's right...A father know's how his son is, not saying anything negative, but there's a time to be passive and theirs a time to fight and play, hard and tough!!! I hear you Big John!!! Oh yeah, just a reminder, last year was last year, he's talking about this year, wake up!!!!!

I tend to agree with JT on this one. This team needs to play with more of an edge. They often seem passive when playing on the road. I don't think he is advocating playing dirty. Duke, for example, plays with an intensity every time out, although they are usually more talented than their opponents, which is a credit to Coach K.

Agree with everything you said, maybe i was just too brief with my post.

Hard to describe a team that is going to shatter the all time school record for field goal percentage defense as "soft" in any way, shape or form. "Intensity," "toughness", "playing with an edge" and "punching in the mouth" are all intangibles, but numbers don't lie.

I am not sure this team can be more aggressive the way we currently attack teams. We do not attack the basket when teams press us, we do not run many hi-low sets or get the ball in short corner against the zone, and we do press teams full court.

sixer, I agree with you in the other thread about why this team will not recreate last year's magic, but not here.
I agree, the team does NOT attack the hoop consistently, and that goes for EVERYONE, including Roy. Further, the team is somewhat soft on both the offensive and defensive glass. And as I think you meant to point out, the team does NOT press all that often.
That said, jerseyshore brings up an interesting point. The team is about to set the school record for defensive field goal percentage. They play tough, in-your-face defense in half-court sets. Hands are constantly in faces, defenders maintain good position for the most part... good team defense all around.
Ultimately, the reason this team will not repeat the feats of last season is the lack of Jeff Green. Yes, Chris Wright would be a gifted playmaker on this squad, but he does not bring what Green brought to the table. The team does NOT have too many choir boys, it is simply not as talented as it was this time last year.

Oh man I was just talking about this the other day. Where is Victor "Shomnick" Samnick when you need him? That guy wasn't good but man he knew how to operate in the short corner. I wish he'd teach Dajuan who might have a grand total of one FG and zero assists from that spot.

Who cares if this team isn't as talented as the 2006-07 version. Why do so many posters focus on last year? Maybe this year's team would not have made the Final Four last year, but what does that have to do with the present? Many teams aren't as talented as they were a year ago. You could say that neither North Carolina nor Kansas are as talented now as last year after losing lottery picks to the draft. What happened to last year's team against last year's tournament field has nothing to do with what will happen to this year's team against this year's tournament field, expect perhaps that we have the second most experienced squad in the country besides UCLA.
I don't know if there are too many choir boys on our current roster, but we do need vocal leadership looking ahead to March. We need players that are going to light a fire under each other with their words and by their actions on the court. I think we have the players to do that, they just need to be more vocal and more consistent. Obviously JTIII calls the plays, but this is the time of year where one of our guys has to step into the huddle and say "we are not f*&%ing losing this game," and take his teammates to task. That's one thing I loved about playing the seniors on Monday; they did exactly what needed to be done to win the game. I think either Roy or Jessie has to be the one to step in and be THE LEADER. This isn't necessarily about who's going to take the last shot, but rather about who's going to get the whole team on the same page and in the mindset that it's going to take to win. Who is going to make their teammates play their best? Every successful team has a leader ON THE BASKETBALL COURT. We need one of our players to emerge as that leader for this team.

playing great defense is alot different than the "attitude" that JT is talking about. While I do love our poise out there on the court, I almost wish we would show some fire at points (while staying under control and harnessing that fire into good plays). I was thinking this exact thing during the Indiana Purdue game the other night....I'm talking about DJ White just feeding off the crowd's energy and howling after he rebounded over three guys and stuck it back in for a put back. Ewing comes closest to this on the team and we've seen Jessie and Roy pounding their chests. DaJaun early in the season really got after it defensively....you could see his intensity as he got right in his opponents faces and clapped his hands at them while holding them scoreless. JT is so right I didn't see any EMOTION from the team after they were getting embarrassed in the first half at Cuse. Again, I don't want to take away from the personality of the team who stay poised under pressure but I hope we can mix some of that killer attitude with the poise we usually have down the stretch.

Did Big John say this on the air? Or did Mr. Sixer hear this via text message?
