I am so sick of the fans or the LACK of fans at MCI center, especially in big games. This issue has been brought up before, but hte majority of u said we should move back to McDonough which i think is stupid, too small, doesnt have the commoditites of MCI, and we have played at bigger arenas since US Air Arena/Cap Center, and we filled that. Heck, MCI doesnt even have the upper level open (thats to make more money, but they dont need to open it becasue we cant sell out or even get close to sell out on the first and second levels. Its sad when the opposing team scores, the cheer is louder then when the hoyas score. It Editeded me off so much, and being a season ticket holder in section 101, row R (far back) there is no fan support there at all. Everyone is quite, the occasional clap or two. They just dont cheer, and our all old.
I have already made a solution to this, although its not even close to being perfect, its my opinion, and this is what i think would work: Have student section wrap around the court, with some exceptions for people to sit on the court and then the next two rows. This makes the away team feel trapped, and they did it an Illinois game, everyone woere orange (another thing that Gtown students should set up, all or 95 percent of students wear BLUE shirts , not grey, it doesnt stick out well enough), if the people that arent students or graduates dont like it, u shouldnt be at a college basketball game!! that is basically all my idea is. what are ure suggestions

As you pointed out, the problem isn't the students (I like the shirts, grey's fine w/ me, but maybe something to consider for next year's version of the shirt-maybe an alternating thing?).
The problem is that aside from the students, no one else really cheers. Both sides of the court are basically dead the whole game-the young alums, the students and the enemy fans in the corners are the only ones cheering. The problem w/ your plan to fix the dead MCI is that it would be hard to fill an expanded student section-remember, there are only something like 6000 undergrads and sad to say, they don't all go to games. If you doubled the size of the student section, I'd bet that it wouldn't get more than 3/4 full. A better plan might be to move the student section from behind the basket to, say behind the visiting team's bench, but odds are that won't happen as those seats are way to lucrative. The key to filling the MCI is to keep winning, b/c then the DC area fans will come back and hopefully start cheering-there really isn't any other way, as GTown isn't a state school (the DC residents don't identify w/ it anymore-they, sadly, root for Maryland) and probably has a high percentage of alums that go back home to work and therefore can't come to the games.

The student section should definitely surround the court as you say, there is no doubt about that.
However you are wrong about the shirts. BLUE does not stick out at all in MCI!!! The GRAY is much better and there is no doubt that it sticks out more. All of MCI is made up of dark seats and the GRAY sticks out. Also, many other schools have BLUE as a school color and GRAY is unique.
The student section should at the very least span the width of the court on the opposite side of the benches(and then possibly behind the baskets as well). We dont have to surround the side of the benches. DO THIS FOR US ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT!!!

The student section should not be on the side of the benches, it should be on the opposite side.
Gray is much better than Blue for the shirts. I hate the Hoya Blue shirts compared to the WE ARE GEORGETOWN shirts. As far as changing designs, I would like to simply change the quote on the back each season.

The Cap Centre got filled for a couple of big games. Usually it was far from filled, and I can remember whole bunches of games where I could hear the echoes of JT's booming voice bouncing off the interior walls of the world's biggest Pringle chip.
Expand McDonough and make the schedule as well as the ticket and concessions revenue our own!

The quality of the product will change the turn out and enthusiasm for the team. It might take a year or so, but people will come back. The cap center was rocking for much of the Iverson Era. Since then, we haven't had great teams, at least consistently, and Maryland has been consistently good. I have a feeling that the pendulum will be swinging. I think Georgetown is on the rise and the fans will follow.

The MCI was filled for the Duke game. So I guess the solution is for Gtown to join the ACC.

agree the key to fill it is winning. But trust me on this, T-bird, DC residents are not rooting for md

Maryland residents are rooting for Maryland and DC residents are rooting for whatever school they graduated from, at least that's what I'm assuming.

i never said expand the student section, u basically make it shorter and legnthen it around the court. and everyone seems to agree with taht, and now that i think about it, i guess the greey is better with all the blue there. as for winning bringing fans back, yes i know that, but still. the fans are weak, and towin games we need a crows, and winning games makes us better of course, and bring in new fans, so i thinks its kinda a cause and effect. another helper would be someone mentioning us to make the top 25 or be on the edge, or right out of it, i would say taht would bring people in. like someone ranking GU at 25th in the nation in some well knowns sports paper or mag, or somehow GU gets national attention, then i think MCI will fill, but until then, i think we need to maek our opppninents intimidated by surrounding them, it might also make the arena look smaller with the upper level cut off with black curtains, it would give it that clostraphobic TRAPPPED look, which we all know we want! hahahah.
i dunno im just talking.
I WANT SOMETHNG TO BE DONE TO THE STUDENT SECTION, MAKE THEM SURROUND THE COURT DAMNIT! SOMEONE WRITE A LETER OR EMAIL THESE PEOplE!! GRRRR

"Firts off: Expand McDonough and make the schedule as well as the ticket and concessions revenue our own!"
YOU HAVE TO BE ON CRACK!
We are bitches to the BE scheduling process. PLUS, if we get the winning action in line, then that will give us more to bargain with when we do our next contract with MCI.
PLUS! "The problem is that aside from the students, no one else really cheers." I agree. Yet, with more attendance, we will see more cheers. Build from within.
As David Byurne said, "Cut back the weakness, reinforce what is strong."
Look comrades, I want to be in the MCI when we OWN the house. I want any team that has to play us at home to know what the hell they are in for.
WE ARE...
GEORGETOWN!!!

I want the Hoyas on campus as much as anyone else. But there's no reason to play any game of any IOTA of significance in McD. As for rining the court with the student section, let's be honest: how intimidating are two or three rows of students? Not very. Rather than ring the court, they should be the two or three sections of the sideline opposite the benches (so TV cameras can pick up our growing and more enthusiastic student section). Obviously, our best option is playing in some kind of on-campus convocation center that holds the REQUIRED BIG EAST MINIMUM of spectators (8,000? 10,000?). But that's WAAAAAAAY too down the line to consider... unless '007 or I win the next PowerBall drawing. Until then, we should be trying to make MCI as intimidating a place to play as possible, but I don't think 3 rows or so of students around the court does the trick. They need to be concentrated in two or three sections for all the (tv viewing) world to see. And ANY t-shirt color stands out and makes a splash so long as people WEAR them. Blue, gray, yellow, pink... doesn't matter. Fortunately, '007 and CAHoya have done a great job getting people to wear 'em. And yes, they are LIGHT YEARS nicer than those Hoya Blue shirts I always got during my tenure (in fact, I have about 20 if anyone wants one).
GO HOYAS!!!

An on campus arena must be the ultimate solution!
However, for now I agree on a curtain completely closing off the top, all the way around, and the student section being moved to the sideline opposite the benches. This must be done to salvage some kind of home court advantage.
Can we think of a way to start a unified push for this? This would be huge. There is no reason why the student section couldnt be moved. I dont care that those alums pay for the seats there. They are empty half the time and most of the people are the quietest biggest lame asses Ive ever seen at a college basketball game.

Just my two cents. EXACTLY!!! plus this way plenty of people could still have their seats right by the court while improving the location of the student section all at the same time. It would be so easy to do this. Right now there are the courtside seats, then a really big space in between up to the hockey wall, and then the inclined seats start. there is no reason why a student section couldn't be put right in that area from directly courtside to the hockey wall. This would make MCI so much more intimidating and I guarantee we would get on TV more because the networks love to see a wild crowd thats really into it while the cameras are showing the game.

'007... so long as people like my arch nemises K.F. and people of her ilk work in the AD, you ain't movin' out from behind the hoops. Alternatively to the sidelines, they should go back to the setup when I started at GU: three of the four behind-the-net sections go to students the fourth to the band. Move the young alums to another courtside section (between the Hoya and opponent bench?).

I agree with everything you're saying Buffalo. The sideline opposite the benches would be perfect, definitely not completely surrounding the court. Maybe the sideline and wrapping around behind the basket(s) if demand eventually got that high. If we just did in that area between the court and the hockey wall then it wouldnt be enough room though. So maybe that area in addition to the front area of the current student section.
One thing Buff, I think minimum capacity for a Big East arena is 6,500 (like the Pavilion) but I'm not sure.

If we got enough support for it, especially from alums with season tickets maybe we could get this done. What do you guys think? I really feel that this needs to be done if we want to call MCI our home court for now.

the solution is keep winning and they will come... the students were asked about sitting aroung the arena and its possible but i think the gist was they rather be in one place together the mconough thing not in our near future so lets fill mci and get the oldies to cheer by getting the cheerleaders to keep going to them a t every break and do hoya saxa and do defense they need to cheer adn the oldies need to stand up and get some exercise with their mouths to go hoyas NEED THIS ONE VS ND NEEDIT BAD CHEER THEM ON AND HEARTATTACK HOYAS KEEP IT UP BEAT ND THEN ST JOHNS AND THEN THE HOPEFULLY INDEFEATED BC TRAITORS ON THEIR HOME COURT TO SEND THEM TO ACC WITH STYLE GO HOYAS WE CAN DOIT ALL SHOW UP AND CHEER YOUR BRAINS OUT OLD AND YOUNG ALIKE WE ARE GEORGETOWN AND WE WILL WIN THEM OVER BY YELLING AND WINNING WE ARE BACK

lic, I usually like what you have to say in your jumbled mess of letters. However, I would like to ask you when the students were asked about having the section moved to the sideline. I was certainly never asked and personally, I would love to hear someone pose that question to me. If you aren't just making this up then I would like to know more about it and I would like to be asked, cause we need to be moved!
