Hey guys, I'm new to Hoya Talk, but I'm glad I was able to find a place to talk about GTown hoops which I follow avidly. I listen to the games on internet radio b/c I don't get the games on TV around here. Plus, I read contless articles on ESPN and hoyasaxa.com I'm a senior right now from Michigan, but next year I'll be attending Georgetown where I've already been accepted. I had a question for the board, and I bet the current students can help me out a lot.....
How popular are the games? and how popular is Basketball on campus?
I intend to go to everygame and heckle the other team to no end, but I wonder about how many other students bleed blue like I am beginning to do. Could you guys fill me in on everything I need to know as I don't really have anyone I can talk to around here. Thanks a lot!

CS- just stay tuned to this board. As a 2003 grad, I am jealous of your timing. You're going to hit Gtown as the team peaks and wins multiple NCAA champtionships through the last 00's. JT3 is taking us to the promised land. He's the Moses of basketball.
Basketball is big - and it's growing with every win. Georgetown fans are fickle. But, they can't ignore this team or where it is going. Get ready.

Welcome to the HoyaTalk family, Georgetown family, and congratulations on your acceptance to Georgetown University. Please continue to stay up to date and involved on these message boards. Incidentally, on game days, we have a chat room with in-game coverage and commentary from a diverse group of Hoya enthusiasts.
In terms of the popularity of the games, I think we turn out about 1000-1500 students for every game. Perhaps it is closer to 1000. Regardless, that is somewhere between 10 and 15% of the undergraduate population, methinks. In general, that makes it the most popular student activity outside of the usual college stuff, like partying. The basketball team is gaining popularity on campus as JT3 brings it back to life. He has overcomed a level of pessimism if not apathy that a previous coaching and AD regime engendered by their lack of quality product and ill-advised remarks to local and campus media outlets.
Surely there will be more to follow from GUHoya2007 and CAHoya07, who are both good folks to know in terms of getting connected to the GU student fan community.

Last year, my freshman year at Georgetown, student support for the basketball program was really, really bad. It was a very sad situation and pretty embarassing. However, we are experiencing a true revival in student support due to the efforts of some devoted students as well as a new coach, promising freshmen, etc. and we have filled the student section or come close at most games this season. I have been very impressed with student attendance so far this season and it has been great to hear people talking about the team on campus.
Welcome to the Georgetown family and you can be sure that you'll see me in the front row of the student section at every game next season.

CS, congratulations on your acceptance to GU. You must have gotten in under early admissions. That's great. Of the devoted students 007 talks, he is one of the most. The We Are Georgetown shirt, which you will be wearing, next year, at least, came to life, thanks to his and his henchmen's efforts. Watch out for gophers on Copley lawn. ;D

The t-shirt will likely be similar in design, but the theme on the back will probably be changed in concert with what JT3 stresses in pre-season. Maybe 007 can correct me if my understanding is inadequate or misleading.

Thanks for being so welcoming guys...I can't emphasize what a relief this is to me because I had NO ONE to celebrate the Pittsburgh upset with, and it was depressing. So GUhoya2007, you're one of the guys in the front row? I'm known for doing that at our HS basketball games and getting pretty rowdy, and hope to continue it at GTown. Is it basically something reserved for the upperclassmen or is it a "who you know" kind of deal? It'd be great to know, cuz I wanna be as close to the action as I can. Also, how rowdy would you rate our (meaning "your" and soon to be "our") student section.

The front row is partially who you know, but it is also folks who commit to being on a bus that leaves early for the games. Generally, rows 1-5 or so are the early buses and usually house the same folks.
The front row guys generate a lot of stuff, but there was some good stuff in terms of cheers that came from the back of the section, for once.

It's not Cameron Crazy's rowdy, but it's pretty damn noticeable and it gets better each game, I can tell ya that much!

CaddyShack-anyone can be in the front row as long as they get there early enough, which doesnt have to be that early unless its a really big game. I've been in the front row for every game since I came here last year as a freshman.
However, last year before the Duke game, 10 friends and I camped out overnight on the sidewalk outside MCI Center on one of the coldest nights of the year. It was crazy and totally unnecessary, but it was one of the greatest experiences ever.
I don't know how to rate our rowdyness compared to other student sections because I havent been at many other powerhouse school's arenas. I really dont know much about the atmosphere in the middle and back of the student section, but we make sure to get pretty insane in the front. Unfortunately MCI staff can be bitchy at times because they are used to NBA games and dont understand the college basketball atmopshere, but we do our best and get as crazy as we can.

Sounds to me like I'm gonna have to find some fellow freshman who are as passionate and hyped up about the games as I am. I'll do it though, and I'll see you all in the front section.....if not the front row!
Oh, one other thing, does the Student Section have a name?

A name... wow... this is a good idea. CaddyShack, it's this kind of ingenuity that will take you far. Congrats on becoming a hoya.

There is no official name as of right now, but we may come up with something for next season. I tried getting something started for this season but it was a little too late. Im gonna really try to get the hype machine going early next year and be here early getting the freshmen excited.
When you get here make sure to spread the word about basketball to all the freshman you meet, the more talk the better and it truly creates excitement around campus. Im always looking for more die-hards to join us and make the student section as strong as possible, so I cant wait till you get here.

thanks, but.....not having a name for the section worries me.....a name is the essence of a student section. It gives it an identidy and yada yada yada...you get the point. So you're sure there is no name then? And if there isn't, then maybe you guys should start thinking of one........

Yeah, we have ideas and all and it might happen for next year, but an actual name for the student section as a whole is not something that we have had at Georgetown.
Not every student section has an official name, although it is a nice touch. However, there has been talk recently of reviving Rejection Row considering the amount of shots Jeff has been swatting, and Roy and Brandon get their share as well. Caddy, I doubt you know about Rejection Row, but it is a very important part of Georgetown student section history from the past, like the mid 80's-early 90's. Think Ewing, Mutombo, Mourning!

I know that Georgia and Gonzaga probably use this, but why don't we just call ourselves the Dog Pound? I think that's the most intimidating name we can get out of our team name and mascot and venue (we obviously can't be the 'MCI crazies' or anything like that). Any other ideas?

sorry man, but I really hate the Dog Pound name. It sounds so generic and boring and I personally would rather go nameless than use that.
I must say for HoyaLawya's sake though that Gonzaga does not use anything that ridiculous. Im sure you've heard of the Kennel Club before.

I really like "rejection row"....didn't know that's what they called it, but i'm well aware of Ewing and Mutombo. How abour reviving that for next year, cuz Green has been packing shots like a madman. I also kinda like the "Dog Pound". It just seems to me that a student section name could get students excited about the game. Especially students who have no interest in basketball. If you have a name for the student section, it becomes more of an elite "club" instead of just a mob of yelling people. This "club" aspect will attract people and get them to go more often. I know the whole "club" analogy is weird, but do you see what i'm getting at?

I agree with you on the postives that can come from having a name, but were gonna come up with something better than the "Dog Pound".
Rejection Row consists of a banner with the name and then you stick a hand to the sign every time a shot is blocked. Any input from members of the original rejection rows would be greatly appreciated.
Caddy, Im glad that you've joined us because I love the added input and ideas.
