I was really surprised by Wahab going into the transfer portal, and it is especially disappointing to have such a setback when the season ended on a pretty good note. So a few points: (1) Transfers. Clearly, transfers have become a bigger part of the college game (for better or worse, but that is another discussion). It's more common. But, the sentiment that this is just the way the game is now is simply untrue. Do players transfer frequently? Yes. Do players who are starting and the "stars" of the team transfer frequently? Absolutely not. Akinjo, McClung, and Wahab all basically had the keys to the kingdom, and yet they left anyway. Clearly, Ewing really liked Wahab, as evidenced by his post-game comments during the BET and in interviews. So, there is something else going on here, but what is it? I have no idea. It's really all speculation at this point. But, I do wonder whether Ewing is meaningfully connecting with the players. Is he making them want to play for him? Is he encouraging? Inspiring? I have no idea, but anybody who has played for a good coach in any sport (or activity) knows that there are coaches that just instill such a high degree of connection that players become devoted and want to do as much as they can for that coach. And, I have no doubt some of our guys do - for example, Pickett really seems dedicated to Ewing, and others like Trey Dickerson clearly felt a strong connection. But, I do wonder, because this type of roster turnover is simply not normal. We simply are not going to be regular NCAA contenders if we cannot figure out the roster retention situation. It's great for Ewing to put together solid recruiting classes, but if we only get the players for a year or two, it's not very useful. I don't have a solution, and do not claim to offer one. But, Ewing needs to figure this out. (2) Style of Play. The idea that Wahab left because Ewing indicated he is going to change our style of play is absurd. First, Ewing has given no indication he wants to change his style of play. Second, Ewing was recently praising Wahab as potentially the next great Georgetown big man. If he wanted to change the style of play, why would he do that? That said, I think a change of style could be warranted. Unless Ighoefe, Wilson, or Mutombo have huge jumps over the summer, none of them will be nearly as good as Wahab. Relying on a big man is already problematic in today's game for a number of reasons, but it's particularly a problem if you try to force it to big men who aren't that efficient, and we know Ighoefe and Wilson aren't ready (now). (3) Ewing and Big Men. I know it is a media talking point to say "What big man wouldn't want to learn from the best," but frankly, we now have an answer to that question: Wahab. I always thought it was a silly talking point because there are plenty of great players who aren't good coaches, but nonetheless this idea persists. I truly do fear for next season, as I think without Wahab, it's going to make getting back to the tournament that much harder. I still think the solution is a strong focus on defense, and playing as we did in the BET, rather than the rest of the season. If we do that, we can play well even without Wahab, but it's going to be hard. We will need to hope some of our freshman are ready to contribute more than we think. I think we are forgetting the impact of social media and the fact that the student-athletes often read what was written. Plenty was written about Q post-NCAA tournament to the sentiment that Q helped us offensively but hurt us defensively, and that we needed to go small. Couple that with all of the accolades given towards DH, and the fact that DH got the MVP for the BE Tournament, and the hype over next year's class, it is entirely possible for a young athlete to question things. This is entirely speculative, as are all of the other "theories" out there, but I do not think our fan base helps matters by publicly speaking negatively about any of our players. Why would a player feel "at home" if the fan base is criticizing him publicly? Former players have said that the posts are read and can have an impact on the players. I realize that there are fans at every school that post negatively, but I really wish our fans would stop and just provide support. It can only help, whereas the negative posts can only hurt. Um - the fan base at whatever school he picks will sing his praises when he commits - and then jump all over him the first time he goes 3-11 with 4 turnovers. Every single one. HoyaTalk is no different.

So, this is going to be the last time a mediocre Syracuse team barely sneaks into the tournament and then still makes a Sweet 16 or Final 4 because that's how far they have to go before they get matched up with a team that has a decent offense and more than 1 day to prepare for their junk defense, right? Buddy's going to go pro, Nosepicker Jim is going to finally retire, and then they'll never have another coach who can recruit any kind of talent to play in Siberia for the 9th most important program in the conference, yes? Program officially dead now? Cool, tks. Unfortunately Jimmy Boeheim the coaches namesake is transferring since he did not get a season at Cornell. So perhaps Jim will stick around 1 year to coach his other son! Still, you have to believe Syracuse's days as a known basketball program are nearing an end! Buddy Boeheim will not only be back next year, he will take the extra COVID year just so dad can justify staying around. Buddy's mom will force him to stay - would you want Magoo to retire and hang around the house all day complaining about every call you made - housekeeping, shopping, gardening, dinner?

Thoughts and prayers for a quick return to health my friend. Just not the same here without you.

There are similarities between Few and Gonzaga and Petersen and Boise State in football except Few wasn't excluded from the tournament. Few won’t have to leave for a Power 5 to play at the highest level. He has momentum, and no one in that conference is going to stop them The only question would be whether at some point he wants to face a regular season challenge by moving to a Power 5 conference. Not sure that would be enough since he already has a national championship Challenger most years.

Almost. There is one orange worse than all.

Let's see where Q winds up before speculating on why he left. His preferred destination will say more about his motivation than any guessing we do on this Board. 100% accurate.

The more platitudes you use the less you have to say!!!!!! I can't imagine Shawn Harmon has anything to do with this and he's trying to put a positive spin on the program that a kid he's connected to is joining. Not sure why he's being mocked. Who suggested he had anything to do with this? I wasn't really mocking him, other than his generous use of exclamation points. I'm an old fogey, the use of inspirational poster sayings just amuses me. I do love the enthusiasm Mr. Harmon is bringing to the Hoyas program.

Absolutely. He would have freedom to take it outside or to the rim.

Or, maybe we start all over again and at the bottom. I just pray we get one of those top recruits (Baldwin, Chet) or a big transfer because that is the only thing that will mitigate the damages of Q leaving in my mind. I don't want to see Q go either. He is a good player. At the same time, life goes on brother. Gotta keep moving forward. If Q feels like he needs to transfer, you can't force a guy to stay. If his heart isn't here anymore, it is best for all involved to part ways. Maybe he reconsiders. Hopefully so, but if not, wish him the best and next man up. Ewing has proven this year he can bounce back and replenish the roster towards success. I have a feeling that Patrick has moved on, so Q reconsidering is not an option.

A lot of these teams in the tournament are finished products/contenders or are part of a stable regime that has been in place for some time. This year's G-town was back to square one of the rebuild. There is a lot that we need just to enter the conversation. The required fixes won't be fixed by next year. However, winning the Big East tournament and getting to the Big Dance far exceeded expectations of this year's team. It did give the program visibility again. Something we haven't had in years. It is a good start. Let's build upon it. The BE tournament was great and we got visibility, but the Colorado game showed we are really just an average Power Conference (BBall) team. Average. Well we were below average last season, so the rise has started!

Yes but only the seniors would have to decide at some point before the fall whether they are taking advantage of it. Yes fair point. I was just stating that fact as I feel like it hasn’t been explained that well. It was a good point, broadcasters have mentioned seniors getting the extra year a number of times this season but not everybody else.

Everyone realizes the eligibility is not just for seniors right? As I understand it, everyone basically got a free year this year, ie Harris can be here 4 more years. Yes but only the seniors would have to decide at some point before the fall whether they are taking advantage of it.

Is there an NCAA deadline when seniors who have otherwise used up their eligibility must declare that they are returning?

So what you are saying is that if we win, it could only be because Colorado missed open 3's. That sounds like a familiar refrain 🤔 Hi Frazier 👋 Anyone that had watched Colorado knew what they were going to do to our defense. The perimeter D was not fixed this year. We had better run protection and rebounding. As I told someone in private on here I didn’t feel like arguing with anyone that thought it was because I had a feeling this game was coming. It was a great season. Hopefully this makes Ewing realize that he needs to work on the same stuff that he has other years. la - I thought our 3 point defense was better down the stretch. We closed out better (not perfect of course) and had a better sense of which shooters we had to stay on and which we could play off a little. But yeah today exposed us. Although the biggest problem was Dante being owned and others leaving their man to help him. We do agree that we still have a lot of defensive issues to address.

This moment was simply way too big for this bunch. They panicked, forgot everything that got them here. Hopefully a learning experience for the ones that are back next year.

Let's show some Hoya pride this half. Contest their 3's. Stop taking wild shots. maybe concentrate on your FT's.
