I wonder if he decided on his own that finishing his degree at Cal Baptist was better than Georgetown?

Let me state at the outset that I want Aminu to succeed in the NBA, as it is a good reflection on Georgetown. We are also basically down to Otto Porter and Jeff Green when it comes to long-term players in the NBA, we need to keep a little of that pipeline open. Hopefully Yurtseven will stick longer-term, I am less confident Pickett will, but hope he does too. In any event, I think there is a lot of energy spent on "did Ewing make X player" NBA ready, etc. And, would that player have been better off with a different coach? Different team? These are interesting "what if" scenarios to discuss, but I think a lot of times they are beside the point (which makes them a perfect off-season subject). From my perspective, my biggest concern is winning in college. Now, it just so happens that winning in college is easier when you have NBA-talent. So oftentimes, but not always, the two goals (winning in college, getting guys into the NBA) are the same. All that said, my biggest concern is how guys play on our team. Not how they eventually play in the NBA. Guys like Otto Porter, Greg Monroe, Jeff Green, and Roy Hibbert were truly excellent, even elite-level college seasons with Georgetown. Thus far, we really haven't seen that from anybody on Ewing's roster, including the guys who have made the NBA. Derrickson is probably the best college player of the bunch, Yurtseven was solid and above average, but not elite. Pickett simply wasn't a good college player, though he did improve over his 4 years. My point being, I think criticizing Ewing for not getting guys NBA ready is a sideshow. Rather, I want guys who are going to excel in college. That's why I would love shooters, for example, like DSR, who are excellent college players, even if they have no shot in the NBA. And that's why using NBA sets or NBA-style defense is really irrelevant if it doesn't lead to wins. The college and NBA are different animals, even if often, success in one often leads to success in the other. Pickett didn't live up to expectations but to say he wasn't a good college player simply isn't true. Do you know how hard it is to score 30pts on the HS level? Pickett has at least 1 on the college level and plenty of 20pt games. The kid wasn't consistent but he was a good college player. His career high was 21 points and he scored 20 or more four times in four years.

His lack of improvement over the year will hurt him. Hard to say if that would have been different at another school but playing for anyone other than the worst coach in the country may have helped. Lack of development and the record for the school you play for are two different things in the eyes of the league. I agree aminu didn’t develop noticeably over the course of his Hoya career. At the same time, he was terrific in the combine and helped himself considerably. Maybe that actually had something to do with his time with Pat. Maybe it didn’t. But he did help himself. I don’t think that can be contested. As for development, there are coaches who have great teams annually but aren’t known in league circles as being great at developing talent. Same in inverse. What I’m saying is once you enter the draft a team doesn’t care whether you played for the worst or best team in the country. They just judge whether you can play at the NBA level. So on aminu’s case, the fact that he played for an 0-20 team doesn’t mean anything. All I am saying is that if he had played for anyone other than the worst coach in the country, the odds are good he would be a better player today and in a better position going into the draft.

DaytonaHoya31's been a longtime beat reporter for the Utah Jazz, currently w/ The Athletic, so would take what he has to proffer as more than amply credible. He says that playing on a crappy team won’t matter. Fine. I’m saying that wasting a year of development will hurt him. If they are looking to see if he’s ready to play in the NBA, I can’t imagine that losing a formative year will help that evaluation at all.

Serious question - what did Georgetown or Ewing provide Aminu (take Shawn Harmon out the picture for a second) that he couldn't have got at Weber State or Norfolk State (the kenpom.com teams that were adjacent to Georgetown)? He stayed for 1 year, he didn't develop any discernible new basketball skill, and reputationally the 0-20 probably hurts him. Ok this is where I gotta stop you. The NBA couldn’t care less with what your team does, so, no, 0-20 did not or will not hurt Aminu Mohammed one bit. He will be judged strictly on whether they think he can play on the NBA level or not. Not more, no less His lack of improvement over the year will hurt him. Hard to say if that would have been different at another school but playing for anyone other than the worst coach in the country may have helped.

Hope Tim kills it at this level. Does really say a ton about our roster last season that the only kid that ended up high major was Don. Collin had high major options but ultimately chose Tulane to be close to home, but still. It’s reassuring that we’ve added players that seemingly all had high major options elsewhere besides Ezewiro. Ezewiro was recruited by Oregon State Pac12. Maybe the only major team worse than Georgetown.

Ewing just can’t get a break. Even when he manages to convince a highly rated player to come here, it turns out that the guy is just no good afterall.

What isn’t a big coaching mismatch when Patrick Ewing is involved? You know, some people here seem to think that any bit of news is just an excuse for other people to knock Ewing. I cannot imagine where they get that idea. If this isn't the place to make a factual observation about one of the worst coaches in history, where is the place to do it?

barttorvik has Texas Tech as a top 25 team (#24), Lunardi has them as a 6 seed. Likely a decent team. Mark Adams vs. Patrick Ewing a big-time coaching mismatch - we will likely get destroyed. What isn’t a big coaching mismatch when Patrick Ewing is involved?

Casual Hoya post-publishing edit : How is printing a bunch of rumors "dismissing them"? Dismissing them would be something like "I heard X, but that does not make sense because of Y, Z, and A." The author tried to substantiate the Ryan Mutombo rumor based on a Trey Mourning rumor that they didn't even bother to explain and the Trey Mourning thing doesn't make any sense. Isn’t the whole idea of moving a recruited scholarship player to walk on status ineffective? This seems to come up every so often and I seem to recall that a recruited player will count against the scholarship limit as long as he is on the roster regardless of his actual financial aid status.

I have watched some highlights from HS to LSU. And from what I can see this kid has a huge wingspan. I’m guessing around 7-2. I can see him starting at center, setting the tone, blocking shoots, hard fouls, put back dunks, before Ryan can enter.. I’m sure that LSU highlight reel was something to behold.

I certainly hope that second kid from LSU can play, as it looks like he is going to have to. Bradley Ezewiro is definitely going play at the 5. He’s a down low player. He didn’t get a lot minutes at LSU. But he’s expected to get minutes at Gtown. I believe Nickelberry convinced him more minutes so he committed to our Hoyas. Any time you can add the last guy off the bench from an ok team, you just have to do it.

I really want to be excited and upbeat about what's going on -- just not sure what I'm looking at. I'm hoping that there is real planning & strategy behind all of the moves that the coaches and staff have been making. You know better than this.

Why has Ewing been unable thus far to recruit a top-100 center out of high school? You would think this would be a given. Probably some combination of his being bad at recruiting and the vast majority of people wanting nothing to do with this disaster.

Again the transfer issue hit Gtown long before the new transfer rule or NIL came into place, putting the blame on the “landscape” of CBB is just excuse making in my opinion… There was a time when Gtown fans took pride in the fact the program they rooted for was different from the rest now you seem to be happy to hide behind being the same off the court.. As many or most on the board knows since I repeat it so often is that I place the great majority of blame for how far this program has fallen on the administration not PE so trying to come at me like I have some long standing issue with Big John or PE is silly and a distraction from having a real conversation… New Day Homie... Either get on the bus or find another bus that's refusing to accept the realities of today's college landscape. The choice is yours. Excuse, gotta go. The Georgetown bus headed into the future is about the pull off and I don't want to get left. Peace. ![](https://kubrick.htvapps.com/htv-prod-media.s3.amazonaws.com/images/school-bus-fire-1551186077.jpg?crop=1.00xw:0.873xh;0,0&resize=900:*)

The real issue is very simple - Ewing is horrible at this job, never deserved it in the first place, should have been fired years ago, and his continued employment is an outrage. Everything else you are saying is nonsense. Nonsense to those that don't want to have a conversation about the real issues... Once again. Man up. The issue is clear - this guy is not suited for the job. The only thing to discuss is how urgently he needs to be fired.

The transfer problem at Gtown started long before the new rule went into effect, you have to be honest about that fact.. The only reason to bring Big John into this discussion is to distract from the terrible job the current administration & PE has done during his time here. As I responded to another post of yours stating others are bad at something too isn't a good defense of Ewing.. Look man, I repeat. I do not remove Pat from responsibility of his performance. However, I also recognize the reality of the landscape and difficulties it presents to any program. So again, transfers have never (before NLI) and are not currently unique to Georgetown. Big John and his name was not stated to be a distraction at all. I'm just calling yo azz out and asking you to be a man own up to what your real issue is. That's all. Man up homie. The real issue is very simple - Ewing is horrible at this job, never deserved it in the first place, should have been fired years ago, and his continued employment is an outrage. Everything else you are saying is nonsense.

I'm pretty sure last year's team was supposed to be that athletic group of players that was finally going to fit Ewing's system and finally show what he can do with the right group. How did that work out? That would be a lot of hype to put on one, athletic, 5 star recruit. Would you expect anything different from this place? There are only a few of us who have been right all along.
