As a local Atlantan, and a frequent Atlanta Hawks fan (I know, its been a long decade!) let me tell you to be very careful in your purchase of tickets for the NCAA tournament games. Having been to the Dome before for basketball tourneys, MJ's last appearance in Atlanta (Hawks played at the Dome while Phillips Arena got built) and other bball events, it is NOT a good basketball venue. If you sit high in the 300 levels, you will be relegated to looking at dots on the court and hoping that a cheer tells you if the basket went in or not. The upper level seats are meant to watch action on a 100 yard field, not a 94 foot court. Also, and I will assume they will have the curtain again, they put up a curtain that cuts off the far reaches of the arena where they do not sell seats. However, they do sell seats at the edge of the curtain where you may or may not be able to even see the entire court. I have heard horror stories of people having a completely obstructed view.
Now, if you just want to be able to say you were at the Hoyas final four game in the ATL, more power to you, but if you want to actually see the game, I would recommend not going too much higher than the 1st couple rows of the 300's.

Also, if you're really brave and go to Atlanta without tickets.... GA allows scalping but not on state property (the GA Dome itself is state property - not sure if that translates to Centennial Park and the area around Phillips Arena as well.)

Actually, the situation is a bit worse than you make it out to be, sisko.
According to StubHub and other tickets sites, they ARE selling tickets around the ENTIRE upper ring of the Georgia Dome, calling these tickets "distant view" tickets.
BE VERY CAREFUL BUYING TICKETS, FOLKS!!!

I honestly don't know how you'll know anything happening in the game from those "distant view" seats, unless they have a large video screen.

One more note about the Georgia Dome: they don't allow ticket sales on their property. It isn't a "scalping" issue at all, although I think there might also be a scalping law in Georgia but I am not sure. The point is they don't allow people to sell tickets on their property. The normally ask you to leave the first time, but technically they can involve law enforcement. I doubt many, if any of such cases ever get to trial, but at the least they can cause you to miss part or all of the game and at worst your tickets could get confiscated. None of our group has ever had a problem of that sort, but I have heard of them. The unofficial rule we live by is walking around with a finger or two in the air is fine but you almost never see anyone walking around with a ticket or two in the air. Like most rules/laws, as long as you use reasonable common sense you should be fine, but I did want you all to know, because the first time I encountered that I was shocked. At that point everywhere I went you walked around with either fingers or tickets in the air. Scalping was always a potential issue, but finding the people with or wanting tickets wasn't.
Lastly, I haven't heard of any counterfeit ticket issues yet, but I expect there will be some. I am sure the Georgia Dome has a customer service number which can alert you as to what security measures valid tickets have on them.
Good luck and see you in Atlanta ... hopefully again on Monday!

Any related insights or recommendations on reasonable area hotels or how far out one has to go to secure one would be greatly appreciated.

I'd guess all of the hotel prices will stink and have a 4 night minimum. If I were driving I'd say stay somewhere out a bit like Commerce or Gainesville. If I were going I'd just stay at my parents 3 hours away in SC.

Anyone know what the capacity will be for these games? On Stubhub it shows that there are seats available around the entire upper deck (300 level) and about 2/3rds of the 200 level. The 300 level seats must be pretty awful because they're currently going for about 20% of the 100 level seats where you can actually see the court.

i booked the westin at the airport and had no 4 night minimum. atlanta-locals correct me if wrong but the airport is a 15-20 cab from downtown which is not that bad.
Atlanta does have trains and buses, are there any areas that they dont reach well that people should avoid?

MARTA has a stop right at the Dome..... I've used the Phillips Arena entrance to it before to beat Dome crowds. Also, I've heard you can walk easily from/to the next stop on the north line to avoid the crowd at the Dome stop.
MARTA doesn't go very far into the suburbs and just has a N-S and E-W line. It isn't as good as the Metro, but I have used it to park out in Doraville or Chamblee to go to games downtown.
If you're staying north of downtown, the line does have a split at some point (forget where exactly) and you have to be careful about which train you're getting on (sort of like the different color lines in metro when you're going to the suburbs.)
Sounds right on the cab. I'm not local, just lived within 2-3 hours of Atlanta most of my life and used to go there alot.

20 minutes on a good traffic day. I live in South GA but fly out of Atlanta regularly. Traffic that weekend will be terrible as will airport traffic. Good luck to all of you flying in. I am staying at the Hilton Garden Inn. Not sure if they have many rooms left, but if you can get one I recommend it.

I clicked on reply while there wasn't a single post other than the original. Then I got busy with customers. When I came back I finished the comment and entered it. That was when I saw that others had posted similar things. Sorry I made such an egregious error in trying to help some others out who might not have known. I will pass any credit I receive along to you.
