You might want to change the 'Beat the Warriors!' message at the top of the boards, unless you're going with the turn back the clock theme. Marquette changed their name to the Golden Eagles a while ago.

In a poll two years ago to change the Marquette nickname from the unoriginal and unappealing "Golden Eagles", 81% of voters chose Warriors, to which the school promptly made the name Warriors ineligible for voting. Any Marquette fan knows that calling them the Warriors is not a slight. If it was meant to be a slight, the headline would read "Beat The Gold."

It seems like a lot, but both Pomeroy and Sagarin would have us as seven point favorites over Marquette.

If Marquette is the Warriors, then Gu is the Gramercy Park Rifs.

Roy needs to make 6 field goals against Marquette to qualify for the NCAA lead in FG percentage

If Marquette is the Warriors, then Gu is the Gramercy Park Rifs. And those Warriors killed Cyrus. We'll make 'em pay.

I think we called them the Golden Showers last year. I think that is a slight

I might have the big one on Saturday, so enjoy my posts while I'm still alive.
I went to the Marquette game tonight (was tricked into following the Hoyas by cell phone because I was supposed to be in a small group having dinner with Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, but he went straight to the game--needless to say I was displeased). I'm awake now because I just finished watching the game tape.
Saturday will be a fascinating matchup. Marquette fans expect to win--their confidence is at an all time high. Their guards are playing very well. Dominic James was invisible tonight and they still won by 20. Not only is the McNeal-Matthews-James combo unmatched by anybody else in the league, but they've gotten a lot off the bench lately from David Cubillan, who has really been able to stroke the three. This game will come down to a few things:
1) Whether the Hoyas can limit turnovers
2) Whether we can get the ball to our bigs, despite MU's intense defense
3) Whether we hit enough shots to bust the zone they're likely to play.
MU plays with extremely high energy at all times, and we will have to match their intensity. Whether they go full court or not (not likely early in the game), it will be imperative that our guards not only take care of the ball, but also look to get it to Green and Hibbert whenever possible. The simple fact is that MU has very little inside. Ousmane Barro is Marquette's Junkyard Dog. He lacks creative offensive skills but cleans up all the garbage--Rutgers ignored him tonight most of the time while playing a 2-3 zone and he consistenly found his way to the backboard and had a number of putbacks and dish-off baskets.
I feel 1000 times better going into this game than I did when we had to go to Milwaukee last year, largely because they were the team with something to prove and we had the high ranking. This time the tables are turned to some degree, and I'm hoping we can take advantage. We also came in off a frustrating loss to West Virginia and had a trip to Nova waiting in the wings. This time we come in with our best win in weeks.
I won't be able to sleep until Saturday. Go Hoyas.

Big Dog,
I think we are a better team this year than last season. I think we're going to be able to handle their pressure and run a good offense. I think this game comes down to whether we can defend without fouling while stopping penetration at the same time.
that, i know, will be a difficult task. James and McNeal, simply put, are the two most difficult guard covers in the league. But if we can shut barro down, that means we're shutting down the penetration and kick. that will be critical.
If we can do those things, i think the offense takes care of itself and we win the game. But, make no mistake, this is our most difficult matchup of the season. more difficult than duke. more difficult than oregon, and certainly more difficult than pitt and nova.

that's just blatant dis-respect out of the marquette fans. that gets my blood boiling. at least we respect their players.

I hope the refs try to keep the game clean inside. Barro was allowed to pound on Roy all game in Milwaukee last year.

Here's the deal, I'm not worried about stopping the penetration. It's not Pitt's penetration, for example, that kills. It's what happens next.
And Pitt does the "next" very well. That is, they shoot well from the outside, they get weak side rebounds, they make interior passes. They score.
Marquette is, to be frank, much more like Louisville than Pitt. They turn defense into offense and those guards are very good at doing that. The key for the Hoyas is to get into a halfcourt game and grind it out. Once you get Marquette in the halfcourt they are very ordinary.
So turnovers will be key as will altering shots and staying out of foul trouble. Just as important will be getting them IN foul trouble. Marquette still plays defense with their hands too much. Way better than last year but they like to reach and grab still.
Last but not least, we just ruined a party so we have to make sure nobody ruins ours. Fans have to get loud.

i was completely disgusted wth the way we played at marquette last year. their aggressive man to man stiffled us and we had a ton of TO's, much like the nova game this year. this will be a good test against a tough defensive team. the guards HAVE to play MUCH better than they did against louisville.
I KNOW IT'S A BROKEN RECORD, BUT LIMIT TURNOVERS AND REBOUND!
