i was completely disgusted wth the way we played at marquette last year. their aggressive man to man stiffled us and we had a ton of TO's. this will be a good test against a tough defensive team. the guards HAVE to play MUCH better than they did against louisville. I KNOW IT'S A BROKEN RECORD, BUT LIMIT TURNOVERS AND REBOUND! Well you mean in the game at Marquette I assume. They did both those things at the Garden.

Here's the deal, I'm not worried about stopping the penetration. It's not Pitt's penetration, for example, that kills. It's what happens next. And Pitt does the "next" very well. That is, they shoot well from the outside, they get weak side rebounds, they make interior passes. They score. . The other huge thing with Pitt is they are a tremendous jumpshooting team from 8'-15' out. Baseline, elbow, randomly in space... that was, to me, the killer part of their penetration.

I will give Marquette their due. They are a very good team, far better than I expected them to be this season. And their backcourt stacks up against anybody in the country. They will be a tough out come Tourney time, and, just like the Hoyas, if they get a favorable draw they could be a legit Final Four contender (though I don't think the Hoyas need the favorable draw as much).
Having said that, there is no way Marquette beats us on Saturday. No. Way. I expect a double digit win, and am not really worried about the game at all. We are playing as well as we have in the JT3 era, the house will be full of students, longtime fans, and a collection of the greatest ever to don the blue and grey.
We. Will. Not. Lose.

For the fourth game in a row, our opponent has come out on fire, KILLED us in the first half from three.....and had absolutely nothing to show for it. All big wins for the Hoyas. We haven't been playing the best teams, but we've done exactly what we needed to do since Pitt: win them all, and win them comfortably. Now it's the stretch run, and we are in a perfect position to make our move. Step One: Celebrate the 100th in style. Send a message that we're in it to win it.

In a poll two years ago to change the Marquette nickname from the unoriginal and unappealing "Golden Eagles", 81% of voters chose Warriors, to which the school promptly made the name Warriors ineligible for voting. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) Any Marquette fan knows that calling them the Warriors is not a slight. If it was meant to be a slight, the headline would read "Beat The Gold." It's all good. What makes the nickname change even stupider is that leaders of the Native American community in Milwaukee have said they have no problem with the Warriors nickname, as long as it is used in a respectful fashion.

MU will be tough- they are playing real well and have those guards who give us trouble. We have to foul out their bigs so they can't stop us that way, and our guards have to step up huge again. Need Wallace not to foul out. DaJuan defensively will be huge.

I spent a boatload of money on season tickets to watch a TON of crappy basketball during the Esh years, and I'm tainted too. I'm just getting a really good feeling about these guys right now...nothing seems to scare them, so it sure isn't gonna scare me.

I wonder if we see Jeff, Patrick or Dajuan at the top of our zone. I seem to remember that set up being effective last year against Marquette in the BET... bother them with length, and make it harder to dribble around us.
In many ways, this team is similar to Seton Hall and Louisville in style, just better and faster all around. I like the games that we've had since 'nova to get ready for this style of play, and I think we're going to be in great shape to both attack and defend.

The more I watch us the more our height and depth at the 4/5 seems to be more and more critical. It must be REALLY frustrating for other teams to see our front line and then deal with another 6'8 and 6'9 coming off the bench. It's exhausting and makes it tough mentally.
I also love the fact that not only have we beaten up all the teams we should beat in the last 6, but the quotes from the opposing coaches are very telling. Never do you hear whining about how they should have beaten us. When a competitior like Pitino basically admits he can't beat us on his home court on the night it's named is pretty telling.
I trust Pitino more than any of the other voters when he says we're one of the TOp 8 teams in the country.
Vegas agrees with Pitino by the way.
Let's bring back some Hoya cockiness. The team is getting it and we should too.
Let's have some fun and not dwell on the issues. Every team has issues and I'm not afraid of any team in the country right now.

This is the game where we assess whether we are a better team this year than we were last year. Our superior record this year is arguably the result of a weaker schedule and not a better team. We were very comparable to Marquette last year and I think they are improved overall. Thus, our result against them will be a useful measuring stick for whether we have likewise improved.
Marquette will test our weaknesses of backcourt quickness and depth. A Cook, Wallace, Sapp trio last year with DJ available to fill in as needed is on paper deeper and quicker than the Wallace, Sapp, Rivers combination with Crawford as a fourth even allowing for the considerable growth of Wallace and Sapp this year over last. Rivers will need to play quality minutes as some backcourt foul issues would appear inevitable and zones and weakside defense can be more effective when the fifth man's shot does not have to be respected.
That said, this year's Hibbert, Green, Summers and Ewing frontcourt with Macklin in reserve has an edge over last year's Hibbert, Green, Bowman and Owens front court with Amadou as the spare primarily because Hibbert and lately Green are better.
I expect all 40 minutes to matter so sustituting the right combinations through to keep the right players fresh for the final four minutes will be an important factor. The spell of empty possessions that got the Ville back in the game in the second half because we had tired assets deployed could be more costly against Marquette. Like Rivers, Macklin will need to give us enough for us to be comfortable with him on the floor for at least 8-10 minutes with some run in the second half. Officiating will not be irrelevant as we have made it through the six-game streak.
Two good coaches, two good teams and yet it will only be enjoyable if the right one wins.

I am very fearful they will be able to run and spread us out a la UL, but actually make their shots.

I am very fearful they will be able to run and spread us out a la UL, but actually make their shots. Why exactly? Marquette is a mediocre shooting team. Better than UL? Sure. But Marquette is not some mythical team with a great all-around game. They're a good team with a very good backcourt. You always have to be afraid of a team like that hitting their shots but this team isn't 'Nova last year for example. They're good, but not imposing.

I echo the comments. We have to win this game - it is the celebration of 100 years of Hoya Bball that has thrilled (and frustrated at times) and always brought enjoyment to the students, alumni, and fans. We can ruin other people's parties, but we cannot have other people ruin our party. Besides my late uncle, a Jesuit and at Georgetown for 18 years and rabid Hoya fan (he used to go into the refs' locker room after games to tell them they missed a couple of calls), is looking down on this game. GO HOYAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pluck the Golden Eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tarnish the Gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Embarrass the Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they play three guards against us, Ewing will see a lot of PT splitting defensive duties with Summers on one of them. That's 10+ fouls to give if necessary and Ewing at least is probably quick enough to harrass and defend their guards sometimes. Remember that Owens and Bowman last year would sometimes defend opposing guards and it worked OK in spurts. Maybe Crawford sees some time, but I doubt it based on the fact he has been riding pine all year.

We have a big advantage in the 12:00 noon start as Creepy Tom Crean will be worn out from looking for his pals on the Chris Hansen segment of Dateline.

My dusty crystal ball says this will be a game when Tyler Crawford will see several more minutes of court time than he has in a while. His defense and rebounding will be a big plus as we try to fend off Marquette’s three guard attack. Given the concern that some have expressed regarding the three games in six days stretch we’re in the midst of, his are a pair of very fresh legs that I believe Coach will put to good use.
