Agreed on Summers' continuing to be strong after last game. Jeff seems to be getting back in form. The only bad thing I see is a small one...whenever the team forces a turnover they're having a hard time converting into a fast break. A few times now they've turned the ball over on bad passes just after getting the ball themselves. Need to work on that to get easy points.

Another bad thing is the rate at which WE turn the ball over. 7 at halftime and at least 5 more since. Jeremiah & DaJuan still look like they are forcing/aiming passes. For the 3rd time now, I'll bring up the analogy to a pitcher aiming at the catcher's mitt..........It simply doesn't improve results.
Year To Date: 53 TO's in 4 games, versus 51 by opponents. Also: 19 Steals versus 28 by opponents
I have always doubted that our stat crew accurately recorded turnovers, but even if these #'s are correct, over 1/2 of our total turnovers are steals. I venture to guess that 80% of those are interceptions of tentative, lazy passes.

We also still need to improve our FT shooting.

defensively i think we really do rely on our athleticism too much and yes we get alot of blocks but we really got to stick to it and get better position on defense to hold them from shooting

Game over. 15-point win. WIN being most important stat.

Now that's more like it. Plenty of room for improvement, of course, and we're talking about a team that got crushed by Chattanooga, but more of a killer instinct tonight. Also seemed like they did a better job of exploiting their size advantages. Not a bad tune-up for Oregon, I suppose.

Win is the most important stat...and it was 21 before the final Sead/Izzo fouls (They got on the box score!). You could hear the "Sead, Sead, Sead!" chant on TV, which was pretty funny. I agree about the turnovers and defense...we're still leaping at 3 point shooters, which makes us too susceptible to shot fakes. That'll hurt in the next two games.

How did the crowd look? Also, I see Oregon is 5-0 and his some votes in the poll, looks like this game could be a pretty tough one.

How many minutes did Ewing get? It doesn't list it on espn or cbs. It appears that these guys are rotating quite a bit and I wonder if Ewing felt he would be playing a bigger role over the freshmen and Egerson. I haven't heard/seen anything to indicate that any of these guys are anything but team players but things haven't really shaken out in terms of a clear picture of playing time...(not saying that it necessarily should at this point in the season but i could picture it being a pain to transfer and sit).

From the tv telecast -- crowd looked pretty good. Made some noise in spots. Student section looked crowded.
I agree about Oregon -- I think they are underrated nationally. Will be a tough test.

I was only listening to the radio broadcast, but as far as I can tell, Ewing definitely had less time on the floor than any of the starters, and less than Macklin and Egerson. I would guess about 6-7 minutes total. Maybe about the same amount of time as Rivers.

PE Jr stat line:
P. Ewing Jr, F 6 Minutes 1-1 from 3 0 free throws, 1 rebound, 0 assists, 1 block, 3 points, 0 fouls
I don't have a problem with this stat line. I'm extremely excited that he nailed his only FG attempt, and I hear his block was tremendous. I get the feeling that Marc, DaJuan, and Vernon get more minutes because there games are more rounded right now. Yes, Patrick has more NCAA experience, but his aggressiveness on D & on the boards could easily get him into foul trouble. Not tonight, of course.

Thank you Jeff for coming back strong. Macklin had some sweeeet jams, Rivers had some really nice looks for some assists, even Sead and Kenny got some floor time. Crowd was pretty intense - student section was good and loud and better yet, consistent. Excellent. That's what I call a Hoyas game.

Game Notes: This was our best all-around game so far this season. Jeff is definitely out of his slump: he looked great on both sides of the ball, had some monster blocks, was hustling, and was making crisp passes. Roy had a nice game on D, but still needs to work on his tip-ins close to the basket. J-Wall and Jesse pretty shaky shooting-wise (2-8, 0-3; 2-8, 1-3 respectively), but otherwise had some nice passes and good D (I thought they played that quick kid with the facemask pretty tough). Ewing had a nice 3 ball (his only shot of the night) from the left wing, but still doesn't look like he's quite there yet. 6 minutes was about right for him at this point. Marc played well (3-5) and with some fire (maybe from losing his starting job?), and it was good to see Kenny and Saed get some PT. The place would have exploded if Saed had hit that 3, and I really wanted Kenny to take that shot with 5 ticks on the clock.
For me, the big players of the night were Vernon Macklin and DaJuan Summers. Vern looked solid on O, and other than a couple freshman mistakes, looks like he's really starting to feel comfortable. He went 5-7, and gave us 16 mostly quality minutes. DaJuan had another fantastic night IMO. It looks like he's getting really integrated into III's system. He had good position on O and D, had some nice boards, had a couple put-backs, and was flying around on D (did you see that block he had in the first half? Awesome). I think Summers is going to be that fourth money-man that we needed. He showed that he can fill the gap left by Brandon in terms of a slashing wingman, but also seems more in control than Brandon did at most times. I'm excited to see what he's capable of.
Crowd notes: Pretty decent crowd for the day after Thanksgiving break! The Lower Bowl wasn't full by any means, but the student section was pretty full up to the section divides, and the young alum sections were mostly full too. The students kept it clean as far as I could hear, and did a nice job coordinating chants. Yours truly got some Jumbotron time *twice* on the night (Ed: which a nice young lady happened to notice on her way out), so no complaints. I still haven't won the Chevy Chase Check Card Challenge, though. Oh well. Crowd noise was good throughout, and lots of positive energy before, during, and after the game. One of the ways I always measure crowd-ness by is how full the beer lines are at halftime: tonight was like a Big East saturday game. Good stuff.
Dr. Rich notes: Nice little "thank you" to Rich at halftime. They gave a rundown of his acheivements as our announcer, gave him something (my post law school eyes couldn't make out what), and a bunch of people had signs. Thanks Rich!! I'll be playing your drinking game on Saturday!!
All in all, a good solid night of hoops. We needed THIS kind of win -- up the whole time, learning from mistakes, playing hard-nosed ball, running the O, getting tons of blocks (7 in the stat line, but the blocks were BIG blocks), shooting decently (52%+ FG; 46%+ 3pt) and winning on the boards. There is obviously still room to improve in a few key areas (passing, hitting FTs, finding other options when Roy gets bogged down, running the fast break, etc), but tonight was a step in the right direction, especially with Summers stepping up and Jeff coming back into form.
Now let's take it to the Ducks on Wednesday, Hoyas! Should be a tough game against an underrated Pac-10 squad that is currently 5-0. See you there.
Cheers, Coast
(Ed: And we REALLY need to cut down on the turnovers. 15-9 might win it against Ball St., but it won't cut it come January).

According to the stats fron si.com, we had eight players play at least 16 minutes. Nice balance and getting experience for everyone. Ewing at only six minutes stands as the fourth guy off the bench, and will likely drop to fifth when Crawford returns.
With Green, Summers, Egerson, and Macklin ahead of him at the three and four, it's going to be difficult for Ewing to get much time on the floor.

A few quick thoughts:
Offense is there, defense is learning. We ran a little 2-3 zone today. I liked it a lot - don't know why we got away from it.
Summers is good folks. I'm sorry Tyler but you may have lost your starting spot. Rivers is improving steadily - if the season ended today though - I would still have him as the 4th or 5th option at guard next year - which isn't a bad thing.
Speaking of Tyler - he was on the bench in a nice suit tonight - looked good, clearly felt better.
Roy didn't have his best game, but Macklin picked up the load and had a good game.
non-game stuff:
Ball State travels fairly well.
I take back anything bad I've ever said about Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post - the man does a quality interview.
No students turned out for the game - see my thread on this elsewhere.
