Well, you have to feel for Thornton, who certainly came to Georgetown with credentials as good as anyone else in his class. However, I think some departures were inevitable given all the new verbal commits of late. Best of luck to him ...

Well...good luck wherever you end up kid. Too bad he never quite could catch on. I feel like I saw both sides of the Thornton experience in Kenner...a few years ago I caught a game where he made about 5 consecutive threes and was nailing stuff from 25 feet--I suspect the "Dagger" nickname (truly unfortunate IMO) was only encouraged by tantalizing stuff like that. But this summer was a completely different story, as he was struggling every game with his 3-pt percentage and especially his shot selection. It became very awkward to watch at times.
Hope he gets his touch back and consistently and becomes a solid contributor the next place he lands.

Does this mean Austin or Chris can suit up for us this season at guard starting with the Nov. 11 game against Hartford? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Wishful thinking.

He was the first signee of that class and I remember being pretty excited about it. It is strange that someone would transfer now versus the end of the season but I guess he can sit out this season and be ready to go next year. I hope he does well.

it's better for both sides. josh is allowed to get some playing time with another program (i imagine a mid major type school) and we get the scholly for one of our studs coming in. good luck josh.

Good luck josh..i always think its better for players like him to make the jump to another program where they have a chance to play and shine...clearly josh is very talented and can contribute, but unfortunatley it doesnt seem like gtown was the best place for him to do it right now...its just mutually beneficial to both the player and the program.

In response to "757hoya" I don't believe that would be the case at all. I would assume :
1) He saw the writing on the wall - if he wasn't going to break into the regular rotation this year and with the "verbal" additions of Freeman, Wright, Clark for next- he probably would see little no playing time in the future. 2) I may be way off on this one but he always seemed "down" on the bench. He never seemed to have the same enthusiasm as his fellow "benchmates" during games. I imagine he had become dissapointed w/his playing time. 3) Again maybe I am wrong but I just can't see JT III pushing players out the door. the last thing any school needs is rumors that the coach/school is pushing players out in order to make openings for possible incoming recruits. I hardly doubt that is something JT III woud do.

...its just mutually beneficial to both the player and the program. Things like this make me wary. I understand it is part of the bargain of going for the top in college basketball that you recruit over the guys at the end of your bench. But the idea that transfering for more burn is truly beneficial to Josh Thornton is perhaps suspect. For all folks trumpet GU's academic prowess and integrity, to then tell a kid he is better off packing his bags and heading to a mid-major just because he can get on the floor there (and oh yeah, we could probably use your scholarship for someone else), it seems like talking out of both sides of your mouth. It's not as though the kid is going to the league, so why not stay and get a better education and learn from a great coach and person like JT3? There may be other factors behind Thornton's decision. He may truly have personal issues that require some time off. He may find the year off the court valuable to him academically. He may not have enjoyed GU socially, or had other disagreements with the staff. But the timing is certainly odd- mid-October, right after 3 guards commit over the next 2 years, thus making him perhaps the most expendable player on the roster. I will trust that is not how this decision was made, I would be very disappointed if it was.

I think most kids just want to play. He didn't get much PT last year, and it was probably going to be hard getting more this year. I love deep threats, but if Josh thought he had to go to see more court time, I would understand that rationale completely, whether somebody thought they were good enough for "the next level" or not.

"Ed, are you sure you can rely on that source?"
Notice I did not say Josh was leaving; only said the Post said he was leaving. I'll leave the reliability or independence of the Post source to the reader.
