This could be big for Pitt. Dixon was the last resort in the post-Howland search so I'm not sure what they'd do.

I just read an article in the Pitt paper that he is also talking to Pitt right now about renegotiating his deal. So, he may just be parlaying this for more paper. On the other hand, he is from the west and might want to get back to that area.

The scariest part of the article I read was that he makes $600,000 and "more than half the coaches in the Big East make more than Dixon."
That of course means JTIII is probably dead last, and there are a lot of vacancies out there. But this is a discussion for the offseason.

um...ASU as in Arizona State? how is that a more attractive job than Pitt, weather aside - it isnt even close so i don't know why there would even be a possibility of Dixon leaving for this "opportunity"

I believe Dixon is a West Coast guy like Howland, might have even worked with Howland at Northern Arizona. ASU is Pac 10 with nice weather and close to home. If they pay him right, I could see him going for it. It's not like Pitt is a traditional hoops powerhouse.

Well he is from the west coast and ASU isn't always as bad as they were this year. It's not an impossible situation at ASU and if you're from California, Pittsburgh might not be ideal.

THis is a money play no matter how you look at it. The only advantage ASU could have is Money -- and sunshine. The conference is not as good. The team isn't doing as well. If PITT has the financial ability to keep him, they will. (Unless he sees the writing on the wall that our Hoyas are going to dominate the BE again as we did the first 10 years of the conference... then maybe he is giving up to go somewhere else.)

As stated, Dixon is a West Coast guy. Also, while I don't particularly like Phoenix, a lot of folks do -- and you could certainly spend a lot more time with the family in LA when it is a less than hour long plane ride.
That said, I've heard Dixon has taken to Pittsburgh better than Howland ever did. Plus, ASU ain't no UCLA and Dixon would have the added difficulty of playing against/recruiting against his mentor.
I'm with those who say this is a an attempt to squeeze more money out of Pitt. One which will work.

Choosing ASU because you are a "west coast guy" is like choosing WVU or....Pitt because you are a New Yorker. Unless Dixon is actually from Arizona, I don't buy it. Its money. If he is from a coastal western city, what the hell is the advantage of living in Phoenix? In no way is Phoenix an appreciably better place to live than Pittsburgh, I suppose unless you are a golf nut and think 110 degrees and Martian landscapes seperated by ocassional strip malls is good living. I am very much biased as a San Diegan, discovered by the Germans, but I have always been amused by the number of east coasters who think of Arizona as some sort of dry Hawaii. I am going to draw some flack I am sure...but Arizona ain't one of the first 20 states I would live in given a choice.

I'm with you as a fellow San Diegan. I hate Phoenix (except Spring Training). But it is closer to family. That said, it is about the money. He will stay at Pitt, I think.

I hope he stays because I hate the thought that in a year like this one no less, a superior BE school can still lose a coach to a mediocre PAC X school. It just doesn't sit well at all.

I agree with SF and bin on this one. I can think of 100 places I'd rather be than Phoenix in summertime. We can talk "dry heat" all we want, but the mere thought gives me "dry heaves." 115 degrees is just inhumane.
There might be more to the story, so it is hard to pass judgment. But, if his choice is based on this family/west coast preference vs. staying on a good ship at Pitt, it is a no brainer.

Actually, there's an exec at College Sports Net who applied for a job in New Mexico a couple years back. Maybe he'd like to go to 'Zona.

hahahahha what a great thread, especially "[those] who think of Arizona as some sort of dry Hawaii." cracks me up when people think of the entire state of AZ as some kind of Diet California.
when will back-Easters realize that if we said Pittsburgh was on the East Coast (it's the same drive time from the Atlantic as Pheonix is from the Pacific, folks), it'd be the same thing as saying Phoenix is the West Coast? Where I'm from, if your county doesn't have oceanfront as a border, you're an inlander.

It's not that East-coasters do not know where Arizona is, it is that we just do not care. It is warm and they play golf and they are in the Pac-10. Close enough.

In no way is Phoenix an appreciably better place to live than Pittsburgh Obviously you haven't spent many winters in Pittsburgh. While I agree, PHX isn't that great, I can think of a number of reasons why its better than the steel city, here are just a few: 1) Forced Terrible Towel Ownership (along with acceptance of Myron Cope's voice) 2) Must develop a taste for Iron City Beer 3) Average January High of 37 vs 65 4) Amazing Golf courses that people from places like Pittsburgh retire to. Not sure that migration happens in the othre direction. But sure, they're basically equivalent.

I've got some oceanfront property in Arizona. From the front porch you can see, the sea.

He is also mentioned on the Missouri job. A guy like this is like Few, he gets mentioned with every major job out there. The interesting job is going to be Indiana. I am guessing Randy Wittman or Isaiah Thomas (which all Knicks fans would love).
