I guess Ron Artest is not walking through that door.

I think he essentially wants Shaheens players who all are athletic, quick, high motor and high desire. (Except for the fat big backup center). That’s why Pitinos outburst came after the Seton Hall game. Game has kind of passed him by too. His strengths were taking advantage of 3pt shooting rules (one of the first to realize the benefit of the 3pter) and the full court press. But in the modern game everyone utilizes the 3pt shot And the full court press is no longer effective in college basketball because the ball handling of the guards and forwards is more advanced. It’s become like the NBA where the full court press doesn’t work because of the ball handling skill level. .

Nothing like telling a bunch of high level athletes that they can't do something or that they aren't good enough to put a chip on their shoulders and motivate them to prove they can do it and they are good enough. I hope EC is readying our squad well to meet the incoming Red Storm. This Whether it was motivationally motivated ( LOL ) or just plain being angry after a weak effort by his team makes no real difference to the Hoyas. We are going to be playing a Editeded off bunch. I saw this as winnable game, maybe not

There's two ways this can play out:
1.) They quit on Pitino after these comments, and we play fast and loose and win 2.) They are motivated and view this as a "get right" game and we get killed at home again.
#2 is more likely in my opinion, but I wouldn't rule out #1.
On that note, if we do lose, I am a little fearful for Saturday at DePaul, because I think our guys will be pressing that this is the game left they are "supposed" to win, and for DePaul it might be their last chance to not go winless. That could be a recipe for disaster for us, especially if we lose tomorrow night.

I'm not sure we have an answer for Joel inside. We didn't last year and I can't see Cook able to hold him down. That will be the key.

Pitino's defense of his comments as motivation is entirely nonsense. He specifically called out a bunch of guys on being slow laterally (including Soriano) or being unathletic. That's not something you can fix with motiviation or trying harder. Either you have the athleticism or you don't. How is saying someone is "physical weak" going to motivate them to play better next game? It might help long-term if the person gets stronger, but not short term.
If Pitino criticized his players' efforts only or something that someone can change, I might believe him. But I do not. Instead, I think this is an attempt to modify what he said in retrospect and spin it to avoid bad press and anger from fans, students, alumni, and others.
I was somebody who wanted Pitino, but his tirade at the press conference is one of the reasons I am less upset about it in retrospect.

But Pitino can't unring the bell. Talking heads on PTI suggest it's almost like a Woody Hayes moment. A bit hyperbolic. Two days after his press conference drew national headlines for the criticism of his St. John’s players, Rick Pitino took ownership of this declining season. In a wide-ranging, exclusive interview with The Post that included his take on the future of the program, what changes he plans to make in formulating next season’s roster and the criticism he has received of late, the Hall of Fame coach accepted responsibility for the direction of the year. He didn’t walk back those comments Tuesday, saying he wanted his players to read them. He pushed back on the narrative that he ripped them, instead stating he was “very calm, very collected in my thoughts,” and was merely answering a question about why St. John’s sent Seton Hall to the free-throw line 37 times. Plenty of coaches, he said, have questioned their teams toughness this year. nypost.com/2024/02/20/sports/rick-pitino-takes-responsibility-for-st-johns-season-spiraling/

Just imagine if he loses to Georgetown. What is Pitino going to say.

I just saw the line is St. John's -10. I think they cover. The Hoyas haven't given up, but they can't withstand a barrage from a motivated team.

If the Hoyas don't give up when they get down 10, St. John's is a team that will fold in the second half.

Always a good sign when you have to tell future players that the building isn't on fire. Just a small brush fire.
