Feels weird to not have a Hoya as Defensive Player of the Year, but these awards are always a little iffy once you get beyond the most obviously superlative players. I also feel like Jimmy Walker at Creighton or the DePaul staff that have managed to get into the final four probably deserve a Coaching Staff of the Year accolade more, but if the coaches want to largely treat it as a "Congrats on having the best year" award, who am I to argue with them.

I think the issue is that the entire Hoya back line and mids played at a very high level for most of the year and there's no precedent for dividing that award.

Disappointing loss. UConn played very physical soccer and stifled Hoyas in the midfield - a problem never solved. Ref was very arbitrary in calls he made / did not make.
They really could have used Claire Manning. Should also have switched to more of an attacking formation earlier IMO.

guhoyas.com/news/2024/11/7/womens-soccer-georgetown-falls-to-uconn-2-0-in-big-east-championship-semifinals.aspxHead Coach Dave Nolan "I mean obviously we are very disappointed with the result, and we are probably more disappointed with the performance. I didn't think we had enough energy in the first half to deal with what they brought to the table. You have to give them a lot of credit for doing what they did. The second half was much better from us, and we played more energized but credit to UConn, they never stopped, they kept their energy level up for 90 minutes and on the night, they deserved to win the game. Our group is bitterly disappointed as we hoped to be here on Sunday battling Xavier for another crown, but it wasn't meant to be. We have to be big enough to admit that we were beaten tonight, and we have to get ready for hopefully a national tournament game. There were a couple of crucial moments in the game tonight that I don't think we got the breaks. Sometimes in these games when they are tight and there is not much to choose between the sides you need a break to go your way sometimes and I didn't feel that we got a break when we needed it. Good luck to UConn on Sunday against Xavier."

This looked like a different UConn than the one the Hoyas clearly bested in Storrs. That they even got to this game is a testament to that, having had to go on the road to Creighton in the first round. Clearly some combination of button-pushing has worked well.
The flip side of that is, this Hoyas team looked to be the most dynamic one on offense in quite some time, while still maintaining a strong defense. It's possible that it needs all of its pieces in place to work, however, and Claire Manning's absence threw a wrench into things. They did still generate some good opportunities, though not enough.
I can't tell if Fox Sports archives replays, so I don't know the overturning on the PK drawn by Maja Lardner was the right call or not. All I know is, I can't recall the last time Dave Nolan picked up a yellow, and I think he was right to be incensed that the ref reviewed that call while declining to do so for the possible foul on Karpenko on UConn's second goal.
We shall see what the selection committee brings this year.

Aaaand the FS1 feed died - both on TV and the app - moments before UConn's golden goal deep into the 2nd OT. Silver lining: the Big East will be a three-bid league this year.

6 seed facing off against 18-2-1 MAAC Champion Fairfield in the first round. Not a gimme matchup at all - the Stags are 36 in RPI, just below Xavier and above Big East champ UConn.
Should they win, that likely sets up a matchup with #3 Iowa in Los Angeles, where #2 would be hosting the pod.

Musketeers didn't make it? That must be a bitter pill to swallow.

Musketeers didn't make it? That must be a bitter pill to swallow. The RPI 35 team left out in favor of RPI 49 Cal and RPI 55 Colorado. What a freakin' joke.

Musketeers didn't make it? That must be a bitter pill to swallow. The RPI 35 team left out in favor of RPI 49 Cal and RPI 55 Colorado. What a freakin' joke. Being a Bear alum and a G'town grandfather of 2 Hoya WSOC athletes I have joint loyalties. Cal did lose by 1 to each of UNC and Duke, tied Wake, but did beat Pitt and 'furd in their first year in the ACC with an ACC record of 5-4-1...Also had player of the year in the ACC in our first year their in Lema....Not the best of records, but not chopped liver either. If they get by Fairfield they go to LA for most likely Iowa and UCLA...Not an easy road. We shall see. Couple that with being a 10 year WSOC Hoya fan, I do not like X at all, but respected their team this year. For some reason I don't miss them much...They got caught in the grinder of losing the regular season to us and then the tourney to UConn...Dave has been down that road before....NO slips in the BEAST or you pay when it comes tourney time... Current Hoya team I think is better than 2016 and about the same as 2018....It's very interesting, when Dave has had his biggest "names" over the years the teams have not done what those two FF teams have done (yes, 1 Corboz in 1 game). 2018 in Cary, NC was the pinnacle. edit: Also sad that this game is going up against men's BB vs. Notre Dame at Capitol Arena....Poor planning on someone's part.

We often complain about how tanked the NCAA hoops tournament is for P5 teams. It’s as bad or worse in soccer. However, nothing compares to how insular the lacrosse tournament selection is.

Yeah, the justification for Xavier, etc. being left out is that they didn't beat anybody (anybody being defined as Top 50). Which...is arbitrary, but I guess no more than anything else. So long as you're consistent with it, fine.
But obviously that will privilege the P4 schools. Georgetown ends up mostly being OK...so far, anyway... because DC is a desirable destination for players, coaches (get in some recruiting check-ins while you're here!), and fans alike. It's a heck of a lot easier to get top competition to sign up for a home-and-home and come to DC than it is to come to Cincy.
