This meet is to honor former director of track and field at Georgetown, Coach Ron Helmer, on his retirement. He has been at similar position at the University of Indiana for the last 16 years. This cross country meet is unique as it has invited many of the teams and coaches, who have been associated with Ron. The meet is on Friday.

To expand a bit:
The Coaching Tree Invitational meet will feature teams that are currently coached by individuals that Head Coach Ron Helmer coached, or individuals who coached with him during his career. This meet could include schools such as Illinois, Northern Arizona, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Columbia, Georgetown, Villanova, George Washington, Elon, Ohio, Miami of Ohio, Wabash.
And to re-post Cameron Bonsey:
That Coaching tree has deep roots. Countless all-Americans, many conference championships and several national championships through the Georgetown branch alone. His legacy at GU planted the seeds for success through Coach Pat Henner, Coach Brandon Bonsey, Coach Miltenberg , Coach Culley, Coach Smith and Coach Mackenzie. It truly is a coaching tree and all their student-athletes have benefited from the sowing of those seeds.

From the IU website:
Friday, September 16 Bloomington, Ind. 10:00 A.M. | 10:45 A.M. Indiana University
Coaching Tree Invitational
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers will put out their full lineup on the course for the first time this season as 12 programs descend on Bloomington for the Coaching Tree Invitational.
During the final year of IU Head Coach Ron Helmer's coaching career, this meet will feature teams coached by people who ran or worked for Helmer during his illustrious, 50-plus year career.
The likes of defending national champions Northern Arizona and Helmer's previous school, Georgetown, will be in attendance for one of the final home meets of his career.
Five former IU runners will be coaching squads on Friday including Nolan Fife's South Dakota, Sarah Pease's Ohio, Tom Chorney and DeSean Turner's Miami (OH) and the host-Hoosiers, coached by Helmer and assistant/former athlete Andrew Poore.
31 Hoosiers are scheduled to run across the Women's 6K and Men's 8K on Friday morning at the Sam Bell Cross Country Course in Bloomington.
Seven of IU's 10 point scorers from last year's Big Ten Cross Country Championships return to the team in 2022 and all are set to make a season's debut on Friday morning.
The reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Gabriel Sanchez, led the charge for IU at the Redhawk Rumble on Labor Day Weekend. He was IU's top finisher on the men's side, crossing the line in 24:53.18. Phoebe Bates paced the way for the women with a personal best time of 17:52.72.
Along with Northern Arizona and Georgetown, North Carolina and Villanova will be among IU's challengers this weekend.
The women's 6K will begin at 10:00 AM with the men's 8K to follow at 10:45 AM.

The men were winning at 7K, but UNC got them in the run in. Still a great effort and the Hoyas even beat defending NCAA champs NAU (although NAU had some runners in reserve that did not run today).] UNC 53 Hoyas 58 NAU 60 4 Parker Stokes Georgetown [SO] 23:46.8 7 Sean Laidlaw Georgetown [SR] 23:50.8 10 Quinn Nicholson Georgetown [JR] 23:59.2 15 Lucas Guerra Georgetown [FR] 24:17.9 22 Abel Teffra Georgetown [SO] 24:30.6 23 Camden Gilmore Georgetown [SO] 24:35.9 24 Jackson Barna Unattached 24:37.2 25 Mateo Althouse Georgetown [FR] 24:38.2 29 Matthew Rizzo Georgetown [SO] 24:49.1 34 Price Owens Georgetown [JR] 24:55.6 59 Marlon Belden Georgetown [FR] 25:49.7 66 Jack McLoughlin Georgetown [FR] 26:07.8 67 Jantz Tostenson Georgetown [SO] 26:08.0 DNF Shea Weilbaker Georgetown [JR] DNF Matthew Payamps Georgetown [SO] The Hoyas were so deep that if the scoring went out to 7 places, the Hoyas would have won. So both men and women finish second to UNC (darn Chris Miltenberg )

From the weekend results it looks as if the XC team is the best Georgetown men's team so far.

From the weekend results it looks as if the XC team is the best Georgetown men's team so far. Don -- I wonder what makes you think this. I don't disagree but I don't have the historical perspective that you have to judge. I believe the men are the best since 2019 but I'm not familiar with the teams in the years prior. This is a very deep team with 10+ guys fighting for the top five, and on any given Friday any of them could be the low stick. I also really like the women's team but again I don't have any historical perspective. On Friday at Indiana we had three women who could have won the race overall. I really thought Chloe S had the win with 200m to go. As you said with the other two grad transfers in the lineup we should have a more solid five scorers.

Sorry, I was not comparing the men's XC to other year's GU XC teams, but I was comparing the men's XC team to other fall GU teams (like football and soccer, however we are expecting better results from the soccer team as they mature).

Got it. But any idea what year were the best Hoya XC teams (mens and womens)...the strongest total group of five scorers?
