Conveniently enough, two of our four remaining foes faced off shortly after our game tonight. The glass half full part of watching Seton Hall eke out a home win over Depaul is that both teams looked very wild and did dumb things repeatedly, and both seem very capable of losing to us (DePaul even with Freeman Liberty looked extremely ragged). The glass half empty part of watching is that both are very long and athletic and when they get rolling (as the first DePaul game shows) may be quite the nightmare. This of course mostly just belabors the obvious but I was more encouraged than I thought I’d be, especially by how Seton Hall at home really looked so “meh”. Also thought this particular thread sadly remains all too relevant and shouldn’t slip off the first page. In the meantime, by allowing us to hang with them Villanova dropped out of the KenPom top 10 (from 8 to 11) and we rocketed from 197 to 190 — right ahead of Bellarmine (which moved from D2 to D1 about 3 years ago, and does have a lovely campus in Louisville).

What the hell is a Bellarmine Bellarmine is a small Catholic school (coincidentally, last I looked it had the exact same percentage of Catholic undergrads as GU) in Louisville whose sports teams are nicknamed the Knights. Like GU, the campus is an enclave in a very nice neighborhood somewhat at a remove from downtown. Won the D2 national championship in hoops a few years back. The Hoyas played them at our place in lacrosse the first year Bellarmine moved all its teams to D1 and we pummeled them. But I know your overall “question” is a very apt one, hanging out in the ratings with a team in Louisville that is NOT Louisville and which half the people in that city probably have never heard of is not where we should be — EVER..

Fairfield University was originally named the Fairfield University of St. Robert Bellarmine, so you could argue that it’s actually not even the most prominent D1 school to honor that particular saint. And Fairfield isn’t exactly a powerhouse.

A random stat in our pursuit of a 0-20 campaign. In the last 460 mins of basketball, the Hoyas have held a win probability over 50% for approx. 2-1/2 mins. This team isn't even close to winning a game. It's really remarkable, actually, how bad they have been. Update: 540 mins of basketball and still just 2-1/2 mins where this team had the better chance at winning at any point of the game. But hey we are covering spreads and only losing by single digits. Great job Coach Ewing!

What the hell is a Bellarmine Not a what a who. The eponymous Bellarmine was a Jesuit.

Patrick Ewing is the single worst coach in all of college basketball . This isn’t even an exaggeration

The road to a winless season continues. We go 0-2 in the DePaul series. It’ll take a major upset in the last week against a team with postseason hopes to avoid a winless season.

In full disclosure …didn’t watch the game. Just tracked the play by play and saw that Billingsley took the last two 3 point attempts to tie the game. Not sure why coach was calling his number.

When your program has a losing atmosphere, you figure out a way to lose. I was waiting for us to screw it up. At this point it is pretty much inevitable.

The late Vitas Gerulatis lost 16 straight matches to Jimmy Connors before he finally beat him. In the post match press conference, he bellowed, “Nobody beats Vitas Gerulatis SEVENTEEN times in a row!” I was so hoping to use a variation of that joke tonight if our losing streak ended at 16. Unfortunately, we’ve proven Georgetown CAN be beaten seventeen times in a row. What can you do at this point? Feel badly for the players. It was clearly a desperate effort at the end, but that kind of desperation rarely gets you out of quicksand.

I have been a Hoya fan for 43 years. Plenty of ups, and my share of downs. I have never seen such a disjointed, disinterested, broken and too often selfish unit. I don't see how we win a Big East game. Maybe if Rice goes 9 of 10 from three some night. Not even sure if that would be enough. Frazier …you were early on in making this call. Unreal that we are now at the doorstep of this actually happening. In re-reading this post…not sure I’d agree that this is a “selfish” group. The guys seem to be putting in the effort…just think that we are outmatched and certainly out coached.

I do agree that the players are putting in the effort. The "selfish" is more about guys taking forced, even ridiculous shots with virtually no chance of actually going in. I realize that our lack of offensive weapons and set plays probably contributes to the number of desperate shots.

FWIW, I really think the nucleus of this team (Aminu, Holloway, Billingsley, Harris) with one or two good recruits and a key transfer (e.g. Liberty-Freeman) could be competitive next year. I'm not saying win the BE or go to the NCAA but defintely not 0-19.

I'm not saying win the BE or go to the NCAA but defintely not 0-19. The only way it could be worse is to go 0-20. A complete program overhaul is needs to be made - from the coach down to the roster. There are so many things wrong with the roster, that one or two pieces are not going to turn this around.

But I'd be surprised if all the players in your "nucleus" are here next year. It's pretty clear that, if we lose the best of the four, all bets are off. If Pat's here, my guess is we fill in the blanks with a new round of transfers/grad students, all of whom will have to be incorporated in his "system" as newbies.

A new coach is not going to go with an 0-16 roster. There will be an overhaul. Imagine this team without Carey.
