I’m venting.
I don’t understand how you can play basketball, coach basketball, or run a basketball program for a living … witness the collective trainwreck that was our final possessions … and not be ashamed. IN YEAR 5 OF A REBUILD!!! What are we doing?!? Why should someone be allowed to try again tomorrow if that’s what the last X years of life have led to so far?
And I don’t want to hear anyone call Donald Carey the team captain again. I’m sure he’s a wonderful guy and I’m sincerely glad he’s a Hoya, but it’s ok if he’s just “Donald Carey 5th year guard”. I’ve never seen a “Captain” shrink from the spotlight like he did tonight. If he’s the “Captain” then the ship be sinkin’!

Hoyas improved like crazy throughout the year last year. They struggled badly early and in January got it sorted out to start making a difference and the last few games of BE regular season play they were playing rather well. Blair was benched and then came off the bench, which limited his defensive lack of effort. It wasn't luck last year it was coaches making drastic changes to player's game and players putting in the work and hustling. As a fan of basketball this is what you love to see, no matter if it is your favorite team or some other team. Seeing teams gel and players grow greatly is why college basketball is fantastic. Yeah they did improve, but they still were not a good team. Average to bad teams are capable of playing well over short stretches. I don't have as much of an issue with the coaching as many here do. I take issue with the player acquisition. You need horses. We don't have anywhere near enough. Last year the Hoyas improved an insane amount. They were pretty much crap through December and looked like there was no hope. But players grew, fixed their poor play (other than Blair's defense), and came together as a team. This is college basketball. What you have prior to January is rarely what you have in in February and March. If you expect a college team not to change and they don't there is something wrong with coaching or the program. Last year wasn't a fluke or luck. Hoyas the year prior down to a rotation of 6 layers started playing their butts off, but had dug a hole in their season. Patrick got them going quite well, but 6 players isn't going to get you far. Hoyas have a 10 player rotation right now. Most of it very young. Georgetown isn't a Kentucky nor Duke nor Kansas and never has been and likely never will be. Expecting that is nuts. The Hoyas did bring in the top recruiting class in the BE and one of the top in the country, even with the expectations Georgetown basketball puts on its players beyond the court. The players have all improved their games so far, which is somewhat crazy to see that happening this quickly. What they are missing is maturity and having players adjust their games to D1 college level. There are really good players on the team, but they need time to get it sorted, but the progress they are making is clear. If you want a team of one and done players and expect that, Georgetown may not be the team to follow as it never has been this and likely never will be this type of program. If you love the game and love watching players learn and grow into solid very good players and coaches that are helping them make that transition Georetown may be the team to watch.

Mr. Riley’s liked a few tweets questioning the lack of PT for Riley/Beard/other Freshmen. There aren’t any Wahabs or Picketts on this team to lead a miraculous BET run. There is no sense in Donald Carey playing 38 mpg in a lost season at the expense of the class that needs to play a central role in sustaining the Ewing era.

Just got back from being at the game (was there last night as well but got right to drinking instead of posting! 🤣)
I dont even know where to start. I think most around here know me as fairly optimistic about the program in general and a supporter of Ewing as coach in general as well. We're only 5 games in to a season with a ton of youngsters and that is not lost on me. But the coaching/rotations/basketball IQ/ etc. this weekend we're simply not a recipe for success.
I haven't looked at the box score yet - but I believe Pat played 2 bench players in the second half. Two. Against St. Joe's. After playing last night. Two. Beard for about 2 minutes and Holloway. How is that even possible? You're preaching about peaks and valleys and the development of the freshman and then give ZERO second half minutes to Billingsley. Riley. Ryan. There is no explanation that I would find acceptable for that substitution pattern.
Once again, we get burned by hot 3 point shooting. This isn't a coincidence. This isn't a fluke. This is schematic - plain and simple. Over helping. Not benching guys for continued mental lapses or lost focus on key possessions. Recruiting one skill players who are huge liabilities on the defensive end of the court.
Offensively. The shot selection makes rec league basketball look disciplined. How many deep 3s less than 8 seconds into the clock did we take? Execution down the stretch? Aminu bullying his way to the paint and showing his best Qudus impression of never passing out of doubles/triples on his way to 0 for 10.
It's really difficult to see bright spots right now. Time for more drinks.

Like I said, in order for us to be successful, we are going to have to make stops, defend better against the 3, and knock down our shots! We see in this half.

Random thoughts from a frustrated fan: A well-deserved loss for the Hoyas. Time to stop talking about the youth as an excuse for undisciplined, poor play. Shooting FTs can be taught and this team leaves too many points at the FT line. Aminu may be a great player someday and he is already aggressive and athletic, but he is nowhere near what he has to be if he is going to realize the potential. He simply cannot finish because he is too often out of control. Dante Harris brought them back and then lost his composure and tried to win it by himself. Rice is a one-dimensional streak shooter. There is a role for that type of player but he cannot be counted on on a consistent basis. May be time for me to re-evaluate my view of Carey. On offense we are playing with a maximum of 3-4 players with virtually no effort to incorporate the posts. Last year we forced the ball into the post and it never came out. This year it isn’t even going into the post. The half court offense is just a lot of individual play with little effort to move the ball. Which of the heralded freshmen can actually shoot from deep? Careless TOs have become a hallmark of the Ewing Hoyas. I guess you can say we are playing an NBA type uptempo game, but not sure where that is coming from. We push the ball and often turn it over or take rushed shots. NBA players move the ball and find the open man. Our defense looks best when it is applying pressure but in in the half court it is really not close to good enough. Time alone will not make this group better. They need to be coached to know when to push it, when to pass and when to slow down. Thanks for the post! Couldn't have said it better. All this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ No need to fly across the country to take bad losses. Should have organized a local tournament. Definitely would have attracted more interest - how many people were in the arena for this game?

Who's ranked lower than our next opponent Longwood. If that is why, then it's even a bigger failure.

Carey was scared to shoot at the end and passed up a lot of shots versus SDSU. I’m a fan, but that’s a Bad look for a team captain… Agreed PR. I was sitting courtside and he looked terrified.

Sdsu getting clobbered by usc not a great sign either. At this point it’s starting to feel like Ewing’s job may hinge on a turn around along the lines of last season. I do believe the talent is there, but the kids gotta grow up FAST.

Neither of these statements make any sense based upon his record thus far. Many of these young players don't know when they have a shot yet. Others, Aminu in particular, are a bit reckless. I love his motor but, he has not demonstrated a solid jump shot yet. I don't know that officials will continue to bail him out when he goes down low like a bull in a china closet. Im surprised that he has such a free reign. This team is in the sausage-making phase. We still need Holloway and Kobe Clark to show up. (Don't laugh)! Tim Igoeffe grew up a little in the second half...He has to stop getting cheap fouls. He needs to be more disciplined and make his fouls count. We need a power forward! Dante is playing strong, and yes Don has to be more assertive. Kaiden is the hired gun. He will shoot us in and out of games.

What is frustrating for me (and likely for him) is now he is doing all that dirty work of rebounding, blocking shots, switching, clogging lanes and hustling up and down the court only to never receive a touch of the ball on offense. I know he's no Olajuwan in the paint but he still needs to be rewarded from time to time. Dante is only making it to the hoop when Tim is out there clearing a path and yet Dante never thinks of dropping off a clean pass to the big guy when he has drawn the defense attention during his drives to the basket.

The thing is, we aren't really that young of a team in terms of who plays minutes. I get that you can find ways to term us young (it's Rice's first year with us, Tim has barely played before now, Dante is only a SO, etc). And, yes, Aminu is a true FR.
But you can't hope your youth grows up without giving them the chance to.

For all the talk that we greatly improved last year people need to realize that the 4 game surge in the BET was bookended by two of the worst losses and most pitiful defensive performances in the Ewing era - the finale at UConn and the NCAA game vs Colorado. Yes we played better than earlier in the year the last 10 games, but the enduring problems remained. I’d much rather focus on the 100+ games of the Ewing era, rather than a magnified sample size of 4 contests at MSG to determine how well we are coached.
I’m sure like many of you you’ve watched a lot of other games this week. When you watch Duke - Gonzaga, or Villanova - Purdue, or Baylor - MSU, it’s like a different sport they are playing. These are teams and games we used to be in and could compete. We are light years away from this level. We are further now from that level then the day Ewing took over, which is the most telling thing in Year 5.
None of us will trade the BET title for a few more wins, as it was awesome, but it’s like we made a deal with the devil. Winning that week may have resulted in an additional 1-2 years of the same product now. Is there a scenario where this year gets so bad that we see something like the JTIII end? Does anyone really know the contract situation? Was it 6 years? If Ewing isn’t extended off this year then he’s a lame duck next year which is death for recruiting. Will the school have to tack on a year or two?
I’m not rooting for us or Ewing to fail despite what I’m sure some of the posters will accuse me of. I’d love to see this get turned around, but I also would be taking a leap of faith to to think that’s going to happen. The sample size is way too big now to expect anything different than us being a Weds night team again at MSG. And even next year, if this entire roster less Carey and Rice returns (a big if given our history) I’m not so sure the talent and coaching level is good enough to be any more than a mid-tier team in the BE. After 6 years and $20mm, I’d have expected at least 1 winning season in conference. I will continue to root for the team and the coach, but I have little reason to hope things will change at this point.

I am optimistic! Truly hope you are right. I posted what I see. I guess it comes down to expectations and mine were high for this team because of the hype and the progress that I saw at the end of last year when I thought that Ewing did a very good job of coaching up a team that was less talented than his prior year. As one of the few who credits Ewing with showing his coaching potential after the mass exodus and again last year after the COVID break, I still cling to the hope he can improve this group by February. There is enough talent to compete and more than enough to win games against mid-majors. It's the coaches job to bring it together. That said, we are in year 5 and we see some of the same shortcomings each year despite the turnover in players.
