This is interesting as Georgetown has been reported to have ~$4M in NIL money to spend on this year’s recruits. A couple things here— I think the real number is closer to $3MM and that includes retaining current players, locking in the 2024 class, and recruiting 2025 class, in addition to tranfer portal — I am not dismissing that this is enough money that we should be able to compete but it’s not as simple as saying we have 3 million to splash around in the transfer portal

The timing of these tweets gave everyone else plenty of time to scare their donors and increase their own funds. Nothing happens in a vacuum.

Is this unheard of in men's CBB? (The article is more about Staley as a coach at KY but I found her use of NIL creative). Plenty of male coaches could take a lesson from Staley’s management of NIL. She doesn’t sit around bemoaning the loss of purity in the game, while enjoying her $3.2 million salary. She makes a point of entwining her own opportunities with offers for the team, so her players don’t have to stare hungrily at a coach’s wealth, earned “off their backs,” as Staley says. Example: When Staley got an offer from a medical company named Rewind, she asked the company to do a deal for every one of her players. “Honestly, I make a lot of money,” Staley told The Washington Post earlier this season. “I want our players to make a lot of money … I am an active participant in wanting them to benefit in this space.” Rewind not only gave each of South Carolina’s players some NIL money, but also stock options. Staley wanted them to learn what it meant to have “equity.” The agreement avoided jealousies over NIL opportunities because each player got a cut, and it strengthened Staley’s hand as a recruiter: She’s the coach who will try to steer deals your way, and maybe even get you a portfolio too. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/04/12/dawn-staley-kentucky-mens-basketball/

This is interesting as it gives perspective on what a point guard in the transfer portal is expected to make in NIL, as stated by a current head coach. Surprising that Iowa can't pay somebody $500K when we have a current NIL budget of $4M to recruit.

It will be interesting to see NIL by college by sport. Caitlin Clark may have sucked up NIL at Iowa. I imagine football will do the same at other schools

He's goading the program's boosters to step up, acknowledging that his program can't pay hamstrings them in a big way

Was just speaking to a college basketball coach. He tells me Villanova annual NIL budget is 3 million. Kentucky is 9 million. SEC football 22 million. It’s absolutely bonkers.

I wonder if Ted Leonis is on the Hoyas NIL board (if one exist)?

Let’s all be honest. This isn’t “college” basketball anymore. It’s some weird minor league thing with 5/6 years of eligibility and almost zero restraints to movement of players. Can APR even be tracked in this environment? The real question is whether each of us can convince ourselves that it’s close enough to college basketball to keep paying attention.

I hate to say it aloud, but my main hope is that the Hoyas can turn in a good season or two (maybe a BET title and deep NCAA run, not necessarily in the same year) while "college basketball" still vaguely resembles college basketball. If it even still does today. I fear that by 2030, if not sooner, it will truly be a thing of the past.
