I have been watching a ton of old games...I propose keeping this list at least 7-8 years in the past. The “over” rated not meant to be cruel either. But after watching a slew of old games I did see some guys stepping up and some others literally “dropping the ball”
My UNDER rated:
Mark Tillmon: played a strong 4 years. Was complimentary scorer for Reggie & the Miracles, made big shots, came back from bad injury and had an AWESOME senior year. Watching several of his old games he rarely made mistakes & had a lot of sack. I know he is revered but he deserves more. Watch the tapes.
My OVER rated:
Tillmon’s backcourt mate. Dwayne Bryant came in to the program very highly rated. Had the look of what a point guard should be. Watching some of these old games the guy just couldn’t shoot, made several bonehead plays & was often times on the pine in big spots. I remember how in between junior and senior year he toured with BE all stars and was poised for a HUGE senior year. One game at Syracuse that year he did put it all together. He was amazing in that ONE game.
More often he was making awful passes, letting defenses sag on Zo & Dikembe because he couldn’t/wouldn’t shoot and in the NCAA tournament vs Xavier he helped dig the huge hole that David Edwards (RIP) played his ass off digging them out of (5-5 from 3 point).
The tape doesn’t lie.

Underrated: Ashanti Cook - 1000 point scorer on a stacked team and was always solid. I’d take a kid like him all day long. Overrated: James Akinjo - despite being name BE ROY had a lot of problems getting others involved and the offense was often stagnant when he tried to run it. Very talented player but imho overrated.

Underrated: Steve Martin, played in shadow of Floyd, Duren and Shelton, recruited as a PG but played at small forward.
Overrated: Anthony Perry a heralded recruit (top 5 natiionally) out of St. Anthony's never seemed to reach his potential and was inconsistent.

Every call has been spot on IMO.
If you have seen my post(s) in the ESPN CB All time you may know my viewpoint about this HOYA GREAT:
ALLEN IVERSON: love the guy. Used to wear his jersey to Hoya games. His quickness & athletic ability is sick. I have said for years that if IVERSON was 6’5” he would have been as close to Michael Jordan as anyone. I was really happy that Allen overcame that Virginia HS BS that could have destroyed lesser men. His follow dunks would leave me slack-jawed.
He is, in terms of Georgetown Basketball, SUPREMELY OVERRATED.
What is his signature win? Any BE Tournament Championships? Any Final 4? In the 96 BE Tourney Victor Page was MUCH more effective than AI. He let 2 journeymen UMASS guards school him in a painful shellacking in the regional final. Even the measles pre-season thing vs. Arizona we lost.

They had been playing together for 4 years and knew each other from the Puerto Rican national team. It's easy to ay when you know your teammate inside and out. So calling them journeyman guards is revisionist. They never made the NBA but doesnt mean they sucked. They were the backcourt on a top 10 team. Like take the Florida teams. They had obvious NBA talent but Lee Humphrey was pretty important to getting them the success they had. Kid played his role perfectly and scored a ton of points.

Even the measles pre-season thing vs. Arizona we lost. Iverson is the poster child for professional bias in looking at his college career. Start with the fact that he only played two years. By definition, his college career was less valuable than, among others, Duran, Ewing, Mourning, Floyd, Williams, etc. He was the single most incendiary talent to play at Georgetown but his collegiate body of work lacks when compared to those above. Is he Overrated? Not as a talent, but his career surely is at least when compared to those who did so much more in Blue and Gray.

AI’s freshman year was good, not great. Look at Carmelo Anthony who put Syracuse on his back to win a championship his freshman year before going pro.

I can't agree with AI. Yes, his game was rusty as a FR. But in his 2nd year - he was a consensus 1st team AA, led a top 5 team, was an inch away from a BET title and a game away from a Final Four.
That alone is massive.
Was he as good as he was as a pro (or as successful here as other GU stars)? Probably not.
But I'm going to draw a not-so-courageous line at calling a 1st team All American overrated.

Who won a BET and who didn’t ? Just food for thought.

NB: Reggie led the BE in scoring and led the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks. He was also BE POY and BET MVP. . The debate would be short.

Reggie took down Danny Manning and Kansas in the NCAAs. Manning did manage to win it all the next year. Reggie’s career was phenomenal.
