The list really is Alcindor, Walton, Laettner, Ewing. I really can’t buy an argument for anyone but those four. Bill Russell might differ. David Thompson might as well.

His pro career was going fine until he found coke and Studio 54’s stairwell He averaged 24.8 for his first 5 Pro Seasons.

Allen Iverson at a Georgetown is wildly overrated. Amazing talent & athleticism but what did his team’s win? I recall him shrinking in the biggest of spots. Regional finals vs. Umass? Check. Big East Championship vs. UConn? Check. Big East semis in 1996 vis. Villanova? Yep. Victor Page was the man in that game. I like a Iverson but there is no way he should be in any discussion of greatest college anything. Patrick on the other hand should be in the final four. The reason college basketball took off into the stratosphere in the 1980’s was because of the Georgetown program led by Patrick. I will argue that Ewing should be the champ of this debacle. Alcindor and Walton are more deserving on titles but that was a far off galaxy of a forgotten time. TV, Musburger, Selection Show, Georgetown starter jackets, rap music, “Hoya Paranoia” and Patrick was the engine. Laettner will probably win and he is deserving but does anyone really care if it wasn’t for the Hoyas being feared, hated , loved and respected? Laettner was a dbag on the best team but I am not sure anyone would really care without Big John, Patrick and the Hoyas. The Siamese twins Larry Bird and Magic Johnson might differ with this assessment of who was responsible for the skyrocketing of college basketball's popularity. In fact, my final four is Lew, Walton, Bill Russell and the Bird Magic Siamese twins (who I just think can't be separated).

Yeah 1 great year doesn't equal 3 great years....you are merging their pro careers with their college careers....and while it pains me to say this but Ewings college career doesn't equal Laettners....college Laettner is the one of the better 3 year runs that I've seen....and don't sleep on Grant Hill....he has to make the elite 8...2 C'ship and one year equal to Reggie and the Miracles. Remember if not for the Thurman shot Grant has 3 C'ships in 4 years.....

The Xavier 1990 2nd rounder is a bad one too. That was the end of the good old days. David Edwards was such a baller, Dwayne Bryant sucked as usual and the officials did not call an obvious shot clock violation against Xavier in the last minute. Hoyas came back from 16 down . After that game Mouring and Mutumbo were surrounded by flotsam and jetsam and the program did not get relevant until the 2 years of AI.

Patrick was known by the country not just basketball fans. He was feared and endured a lot of bull. Handled everything with class. Laettner too was cultural and either loved or hated. And he was a dbag. Bird and Magic became icons AFTER college.

yeah he would probably go out in the elite 8, but having Maravich that low makes you question who the hell put this together.

I don't get the Pistol Pete obsession. I LOVE Pistol, but he's not even top 3 at LSU.
He was a showman, a phenomenon, a cultural icon, and a great talent for sure... but not many people have the luxury of daddy as coach and 40 shots per game.
There's a reason his teams only had 3 winning seasons combined in college & the pros, and his teammates despised playing with him.
Pettit, Chris Jackson, and Shaq were all better players and had more success -- in the tourney and the pros.
If you want to argue CJ/MAR, that's fine. He certainly wasn't anywhere near as revered. I just think if you gave him 40 shots per game, he would've been even better than Maravich.

AI beating Pistol currently for the Elite 8 spot. My guess is Ewing loses to Magic in the next matchup for the Elite 8 in that bracket.
This whole thing was ill conceived by ESPN and has backfired with all women being eliminated already. Good concept but terrible execution behind it.

Should have just been called an NBA bracket.

Does Iverson even have a signature win? His “one shining moment” in the NCAA tournament is an AIR BALL.
