Harvard announced plan to go remote learning for 20-21. Plans to have 40% of students on campus for 20-21. Freshman plus other invited selected students (based on circumstances) in the Fall; Seniors in the Spring (freshman go remote). Students who aren't on campus for the year get to take two Summer classes in 2021 free of charge. No tuition reduction for remote learning. Students on campus only permitted in their residence dorm and dining hall. Visitors not permitted in dorms.
Pretty grim if you're a college student.

So, uh, this is kind of a problem...

E-mail from AD Reed:
Dear Georgetown Athletics Community,
I hope this email finds you safe and healthy. I am following up on President DeGioia’s announcement today regarding the reopening of the main campus for the fall semester. As was stated in his email, “A final decision on fall athletic competition has not yet been determined. We are in communication with the NCAA, BIG EAST Conference, and Patriot League as we develop frameworks for health and competition and will communicate a decision as soon as possible.”
Since the beginning of this pandemic, our doctors and medical professionals have partnered with University administration and staff, the BIG EAST Conference/Patriot League, and the NCAA to establish a plan that includes best practices and recommendations to ensure the safest environment for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
We understand that you are navigating uncertain times and we hope to have more concrete information relative to athletics to share with you soon. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Lee Reed Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

Emailed to our student, but not her parents, about 20 minutes ago. May be a function of how they're sending them out. I received the Email from Todd Olson at 6:45. I haven't attempted to speak to my rising Senior yet who was looking forward to moving into his Group House on August 1.

As of this morning the only person in our household that was directly contacted by the University was our student, who was predictably dismayed. I got an email from Athletic Development with a link to the post. I replied to them telling them that was nice but at some point it would be important for the University to communicate directly with the Parents/Alums that pay the bills.
One hopes they are waiting to finalize their tuition and other such plans. I’m anxiously awaiting my honorary face covering and 35% off coupon on one item in the bookstore.
All sarcasm aside, on first read of the plan it seems a considered attempt to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. It has language allowing flexibility if the public health situation changes. The academic environment of having to take 5-6 classes virtually in your family home trapped with your parents hundreds of miles away is demotivational at best.

My daughter's a first year elsewhere, and she's got a similar option of going to campus but living in what amounts to a minimums security prison - one to a room, (essentially all) classes remote, can't go "into town," etc... Awfully appealing to pay room and board for an essentially online semester.

Universities across the nation are crossing the Rubicon from over-charging students to flat out theft.

I believe I received the email because my son is an incoming Freshman. For my other son, who attends UCSB, the communications only go to him (parents don't get anything!). It is a terrible situation all around. The idea of doing any year of college remotely is just plain awful. My son who goes to UCSB is going out there whether classes are online or not, and I don't blame him.

Pre-print on how frequently testing should be done to accurately find and contain COVID infections on a college campus.

Universities across the nation are crossing the Rubicon from over-charging students to flat out theft. Georgetown's situation is by no means unique but absolutely limits its ability to lower tuition: it is highly leveraged. Total tuition revenue across all schools in 2019 was $648 million. Total salaries was $746 million. The only thing preventing the ship from sinking is the return on the endowment and the ability to manage debt. There are some ways to address this, some out of bounds: for example, end all need based aid or staff pensions. The three levers that Georgetown use are: 1. More Revenue: Other than tuition hikes, how would you do this? Sharply increase enrollment with large student populations outside the campus plan boundaries. 2. Fewer Expenses: No one likes to cut costs when it's their cost. Cutting faculty and staff by as much as a third would make a difference but the howling would be very audible. 3. Philanthropy: Double annual giving and get the endowment above $3 billion by 2030. Unfortunately, even that's not competitive with its peers.

Georgetown, like a lot of schools, is implementing workarounds to shield foreign students in the statuses affected by the recent administration decision regarding virtual schooling:
