Going through the last few pages of this thread and it is so much negative talk about the coaching staff and their recruiting ability and the overall strategy. Same staff and strategy just landed a top 20 recruiting class, including one of the 5 star players that posters said the staff shouldn't waste time pursuing. TTS In fairness, it was mostly one poster whose recruiting mantra was don’t waste time on 5 stars. And that poster hasn’t suggested we should stop pursuing PBJ so perhaps the thinking has evolved with our recent recruiting success. Yeah I remember dude kept saying that. I just don't remember who dude was. Anyways....I thought a good strategy was to go after one or two high schoolers a year and the rest should be transfers. But.....if coach lands Baldwin, I think his strategy of getting a high end guy or two (5's and high 4's) along with a 3 star and a high transfer or two is a good good mix for a winning team. Next year, we won't have such a need to go after a guy or two from the transfer market unless someone transfers which I hope doesn't happen because I like this nucleus of guys were getting. When we need to replace four or five guys in a season like in the next few years, I would love for him to stay with this recruiting strategy. I think it could be a recipe for success. Gumbo!

Grad transfers are a one year deal and 5-stars tend not to stay more than 1-2 years, so always be recruiting!

Wow this thread has aged horribly. It's laughable some of the thing those folks were saying. But in tru HoyaTalk fashion, when proven wrong...posters go away...

Hope they have evolved as our recruiting has evolved. I also wouldn't mind picking up Cisse on the rebound.

Cisse’s game is very similar to Malcolm’s. Rudimentary skill wise, but athletic and can rebound and block shots. Malcolm could be here four more years if he chooses and we’ve already invested two years in him...it will be telling if we pursue Cisse.

Cisse is a much more accomplished player at this point than Malcolm. Malcolm does have a similar level of agility and quickness, but Cisse is much stronger and, while still not a developed offensive player, he does impact the game offensively with his aggressiveness. Cisse is a different type of center than the Hoyas have been playing with for the last few years. His speed in transition and explosiveness near the rim would make teams account for him when on offense and his defense would be far superior to any center that has seen reasonable minutes for the Hoyas over the last few years. I would think Ewing would love to work with an athlete like Cisse and see how he could help him develop. While I think Cisse would be an upgrade at the 5 spot, I don't see that as the most glaring need for the Hoyas at this point, so unless there are more defections, I wouldn't think the staff pursues him too hard.

The sad thing is that even with all the time invested in Malcolm, under the new rules he can leave at any time and we have no control over that. In that sense Cisse becomes more valuable because once he comes here he can't transfer again (without sitting out a year). They system is warped.

Yeah, I get that the everyone needs to be careful with "shiny new toy syndrome," but Malcolm and Cisse are apples and oranges both athletically and re: present skill. Is Cisse raw? Absolutely. But his upside and comp level to date blows away Wilson's. You make that tradeoff in a heartbeat in this instance...in my opinion.

I also doubt we pursue - although if Pickett were to return or PBJ were to commit - I think both are capable of playing the three. Dante-Aminu-Pickett/PBJ-King-Cisse would be one hell of a defensive lineup. Our 1-3 would have to improve their shooting % - although a lineup like this would create a lot of transition opportunities... Just an offseason thought.

Under new system everyone gets a free first transfer so that eliminates biggest barrier to transferring

Under new system everyone gets a free first transfer so that eliminates biggest barrier to transferring What you’re referring to is a single use covid exception for the players so far, not incoming ones though. It’s not the system that has changed...it’s a bump in the road. Not a new system, just a one year feature of the system. Similar adjustments (covid considerations) have been made to almost all systems around the world. In other words, a temporary and very justified accommodation. Also, not sure sitting out a year is actually the biggest barrier to transferring (for a player like Malcolm, who could use as much time as possible for development).

Saying things like “they system is broken” “or “warped” suggests a more permanent change of circumstance imo. Beyond all that, complaining that it’s unfair that player has temporary added flexibility for a very justified and necessary reason seems to be missing the point to me. Don’t see the use in hand-wringing.

Don’t see the use in hand-wringing. It’s permanent. Not just for this year. It’s not a permanent part of the SYSTEM. Is permanent for the players eligible under that rule. Their participation in NCAA sports is temporary. Folks are acting like they completely revised the original transfer charter. Again, I fully understand the rule...and don’t understand the hand wringing over something that is more than justified. The unfair thing would be not to accommodate them... Either way back to Cisse, you take him 8/10 over Malcom, and 10/10 if he has equal character and work eithic.

The automatic waiver for the first transfer is permanent going forward. Not sure how you missed this. What is for this year only is the free Covid year. You seem to be mixing up the two things

You seem to be mixing up the two things Huh, you’re right I did miss it (work had been a little bit of a distraction), and I wasn’t confusing the two so much as thinking of a different, earlier proposal to extend the eligibility exception only to athletes currently competing (as those affected by current circumstances). I stand corrected. Based on new information that has come to light, wholeheartedly agree that the NCAA went a little too far with this one.
