This team has been able to play up or down to every team they have played except SMU. I think if they play up from here on out they could win but I don't have confidence yet that they will. On the other hand, I think the distribution of minutes may well be preventing injury/fatigue which was often an issue for JTIII teams where only 7 players were given minutes and often 2 or 3 players averaged more than 35 minutes each game all season.

Why? Do you really believe this team can't play or be in the mix for a tourney spot this season? Outside of Marquette & Nova, which team do you believe is obviously better than Gtown? It’s not that I see other teams that are clearly better than the Hoyas. I’ll start thinking about a tourney spot when I see them win three or four games in a row.

I am glad that SJU was out of time outs relatively early in the 2nd half. SJU stole the ball with us up by 2. Normally, he (Ponds?) would have called time out, but since they were out of time outs, he flipped behind his back, caught his teammate by surprise, who proceeded to kick the ball out. Then the volleyball that SJU played soon after and could not get the ball in the basket and that would have tied the game. So,with the great game we played (less the TOs), we would be in the same situation we have been in all year. But, yeah, this feels good.

With our non-conference, to be "in" the tourney at the end of the regular season, we'd have to 9-2 the rest of the way. It doesn't matter that there's not a lot of clearly better teams outside of Marquette and Nova (who we have to player three times total still), but we're not clearly better than the rest, either. Even if 11-7 was the goal, that means you need to win every non-Nova/Quette game, including those on the road. For that to be anything near a reasonable expectation, you'd need not only to have other teams not obviously be better than you, but Georgetown would need to be clearly better than them. We shot well this game and either SJU played poorly or we played a little better D. But it wasn't exactly a dominating performance where something "clicked." We still had a bunch of turnovers. We shot under 50% from 2. And most likely, we just match up better against SJU than Creighton. It's nice to win. But we still have a long way to go.

Great win! Jesse and Mac were stars today. Thought there should have been one or two technicals on St. John's, as they were extremely physical on us. Glad to be at the game today, and witness a turning point in our season. I'm also in the camp that thinks Kaleb has a strong role on this team. He is smart, mature, confident and skilled in a variety of ways. Excited to be in third place and on to our game with Xavier. Hoya Saxa!

Couple tidbits from the post game presser.
Ewing when asked about the starting lineup said that he made changes for different reasons during season but that this group is who they need to lead them down the stretch. Sounds like: Akinjo, Mac, Pickett, Leblanc, Govan will be the starters moving forward.
Ewing when asked about his guards closing out games said that what they really need is experience. Because no matter how many times the staff shows them film and talks to them they still make too many mistakes. He gave this answer while grinning at Mac. Mac jokingly looked away like 'who me?' and played with his hair. It was a funny moment.

No doubt the team has a long ways to go but I think 10-8 will get at least a tie for 4th maybe even 3rd place, that would be my goal... One game at a time though... I think 9-9 is a realistic goal for this team. I know basically every game in this conference seems like a toss-up, but after the home game vs Xavier, there are probably only 3 more games this team will be favored in (home games against Butler, DePaul, and Seton Hall). I’d like to think we can win 3 out of 4 of these games, and expecting only one loss is probably too optimistic, but for argument sake I’ll analyze with blue and grey colored glasses. Then of the remaining 6 road games (Marquette, Villanova, Creighton, PC, Seton Hall, DePaul) I struggle to see how we can do any better than split those 6. So there is your realistic roadmap to 9, but frankly I don’t see how the ceiling can be much higher. 10 or 11 wins is just too optimistic. As someone else pointed out earlier, with our metrics I don’t even think 11-7 is good enough for much consideration. If you look at most sites the magic number of wins we need to be on the right side of the bubble is 22 (so 12-6 in conference, BET aside). That being said outside of @ Villanova and @ Marquette, I will go into every game thinking we can and should win. But our track record and law of averages tells me that this team is somewhere between 7-11 and 9-9, which if it’s the former I think is still a great result for a team building for next year with a real shot at a bid (with a stronger OOC slate) in Year 3 of the PE era.

Had we finished with - loss to Cuse even if a heartbreaker of a game that we had in hand, we’d probably already be in the bubble conversation.

Did we just get disrespected. I thought the announcer said if Ewing finds an elite point guard we could go a long way?? He must have been referring to Cole Anthony!!

OOC, NET etc etc. Get ourselves in the position to only have to play three games and we are winning the BET. Book it.

He pulled that one from south of his belt. As if you can bring guys in during the season and, not for nothing, there aren't many "elite" freshmen PGs. James is very good right now and he's improving. A year from now, he could be elite or close to it. We're very lucky to have him.

I also enjoyed Jackson making fun of Alonzo's golf game. Just like every other 2 guys that have ever played golf together on a regular basis.

While James has certainly had better games this year, I thought this was the best he's done in terms of embracing the role of a pure point guard and setting up his teammates opposed to looking for his own shot. If he continues to do that, and with less turnovers, this team will be tough to beat. It allows everyone to kind of settle into their natural roles. Jessie and Mac as the pure scorers, James the facilitator, Pickett the 3 and D guy, Josh as the athletic, rebounding hustle player.
As far as Malinowski's struggles, I am not surprised. The Butler game was an anomaly that had a lot of fans thinking Greg was some sort of superstar. Personally I was shocked to see so many fans jump on his bandwagon so quickly. Nothing against him, but he came off the bench and averaged 6 ppg over 3 seasons at William & Mary for a reason. Unfortunately, it seems the Butler game has given him an inflated ego of himself as well. Earlier in the year, he played within himself, but since that Butler game he's been trying to do way too much stuff that he's normally not capable of. All we need from him is to hit open 3's and make the smart pass. Personally, I would give him 1 maybe 2 more games to fix it before I considered giving his minutes to Blair. Greg is a bit more versatile but Blair plays within himself more and seems to understand his role better. Also Blair, while far from a great defender is still much better defensively than Greg.
Count me in the group of people that would love to see a lot more Kaleb and a lot less Trey. Every game I watch the only time I notice Kaleb is when he's making a great play, and the only time I notice Trey is when he's screwing up somehow.
