Amazed at how much the freshmen (McClung especially) have improved during the season. Was expecting the jump to be from more practice over the summer, but they're blossoming before our eyes *knocks on wood* Don't you know we should have benched them in the non-conference? They made some bad decisions; they should have been banished to the bench forever!

Also biggest story that won’t get the headlines is that Pickett looked like a guy who actually had some confidence on offense for this first time since late last year. I keep hoping he has turned a corner toward a strong finish to his second season. He definitely responded to getting the start today. I thought he was assertive on offense and focused on defense. When Pickett, LeBlanc, Govan, and McClung play well, we are a pretty hard team to beat. Those four guys increasingly seem critical to me. When they play well together, we have decent defensive length and the ability to score in multiple ways. If Pickett becomes a reliable third scorer we are a dangerous team in this league.

Hoyas dodged the bullet when ahead by two. But they finally ended it well. I guess the difference in having Mac out there vs SJU is +11. Still have a lot of work to do to cut down on the TOs. There were a couple of bad calls that come to mind, but overall ok. It is so nice to have a win behind us. And at 3-4, are really tied for 3rd in the BE?

Thoughts: - I'm not sure we actually deserved to win this game. We shot really well from 3, and admittedly from good shots. But there were still 5-8 completely moronic turnovers and some of the worst defensive rebounding I've seen in a long time. Does anyone jump for the ball on our team over than LeBlanc, Greg and Mac? Everyone else stands and watches.
- Putting in Mourning as a defensive replacement is baffling. I know Govan had four fouls, but I hate to tell Ewing, Carter is a better defender and rebounder right now. And like everyone else, I was baffled by the fact that apparently 5 game minutes plus 2 TV timeouts wasn't enough rest for Mac and Akinjo at the same time -- they really should never BOTH be out of the lineup. There's simply no real ballhandling with them out even if Mosely has really played solidly the last few games.
- In Big East play, Mac is shooting over 40% from 3 and has a 110+ offensive rating on some pretty massive shot usage. It's only four games, so we'll see how it goes, but that's pretty impressive so far for a frosh. Since his 0-14 start, he's at 36%.
- Mac and Akinjo both have still a long way to go with identifying the right pass when driving, but today was an improvement. Baby steps, but 12 assists is good, even if 6 TOs is a bit too much. the real TO probelm is the guys who commit them without the playmaking responsibility.
- LeBlanc's #1 improvement point is staying on the court. The bench is not good; him simply being out there instead of Mourning is a massive improvement. Also great to see the 3 and the FT shooting.
- I still maintain that Mullin is not a good coach.
- People focus so much on endgame, but the difference between this team and a tourney team is the bench and stupid mistakes. Remove 3-4 of our 5-8 dumb turnovers a game and we have maybe one, maybe no losses this year? Every team has bad mistakes on both offense and defense but this team has neither the focus nor personnel to play anywhere close to forty minutes. No team does ... but we are playing a good 15 minutes every game and holding on for the rest.
- That McConnaughey-Lincoln commercial is amazing. I hated it at first, but now I appreciate the brilliant layers. Matthew is both the life of the party and an introvert who leaves it to shoot trick shots by himself. We've all been that person, except he's cooler and he really appreciates the safety features of the Lincoln with the most brilliant of reactions in the car. Just amazing and I am fully convinced that Lincoln is trolling us all at this moment.

Mac showed us today what he means to this team!
Akinjo playing more within himself and his game; being the facilitator.
Pickett regaining his confidence!
I say we are back in the conversation. Lovin' it!

I see your point, but I think the distribution of the minutes was pretty good in this game. I can live with Mosely's 14 minutes and Johnson's 18 minutes.

Oh, I get it. When his team loses, Ewing is a bad coach, but when his team wins, it’s because the other team’s coach is bad. I have seen the play of all the BE teams this year, and none has the eye-pleasing offense of Ewing’s. None. Our youth, defensive liabilities, and end-game jitters are our boogie man so far. The coach can help mediate some of that, but most of it will take time and new personnel. But to question Ewing’s coaching acumen on every bad play and loss simply reflects premeditated prejudice.

Amazing to me that this team scored 90 points with 20 TOs. Imagine if they start valuing the ball: end games won’t be as much an issue when up 20.
Agree with an earlier post that said we seem to play sloppier the bigger the lead.

My only problem with the coaching today was during that 4-5 minute period, mid-second half, when the Hoyas kept both James Akinjo and Mac McClung on the bench. St. John's whittled the lead down a bit, but I didn't like both freshmen on the bench, together, for that extended a time period. GU could have extended the lead to a point that we would not have sweated out the final three minutes. I understand that both needed a rest...but not that the same time.

In part loyalty to the upperclassmen, particular Mourning, and in part to keep them engaged and prepared. Yes, it’s vexing sometime, but it’s not like he’s not aware of the downside of doing this. It’s more that he thinks there is more upside to giving them the chance to improve in the heat of the battle. That’s my opinion, at least.

Agree to all of this except your comments on the bench. I think that Greg, Blair, Kaleb and Jagan each have an important role to play and are contributing though in very specific and limited manner. None are starters and I do not understand why they would ever be in as a unit for any length of time. It is too limiting on offense, particularly now that Malinowski seems to be slumping. Kaleb has developed into a fine role player on this team even with a limited skillset. Jagan has clearly worked on his shot from the perimeter and is starting to take it. Malinowski makes up for his mistakes and shooting slump with his energy and crashing the boards. Finally happy to see Blair in the rotation and contributing.

a win is a win. some baffling late game mistakes but hopefully the guys have turned the corner when it comes to the end of games. great game by mac and govan. josh made some huge ft's and kaleb had another quality game.

Getting Blair some consistent minutes should be a priority. He hits big 3s at critical times. He should play every game. I struggle with the DNPs and < 5 minute games for Blair. He’s good!
Would have been fine giving 5 of Mourning’s minutes to get Blair up to 15.

I agree...our depth helped today, without question...great win for the guys...just want to see them cut down on the bad/lazy passes, especially when they're trapped (get rid of the ball before the trap sets), and the telegraphed passes...but overall, a very positive game...BEAT X!...

How about the turnovers when we are controlling the ball and pushing the pace against a defense that is backing up (I.e., not exerting pressure). We threw at least 3 out of bounds while running up the court uncontested. Ugh.

I know his last name is Mourning and he's a SR but Carter may already be better on both ends. I think he has performed well in his limited minutes and Mourning was dreadful today... I am fine with Mourning getting the first chance but he clearly didn't have it today and Carter deserves a shot...

I’m fine with us playing 10 guys, but the mix of ball handlers, scorers, shooters, etc. on the floor needs to be more balanced. The Jagan, Blair, Keldon, Trey lineup should never happen.

Making our free throws today so important. Had we done this last game it’s a different outcome.
