Great win by the guys - also helps that Mullin burned all his TOs early and his team is SO undisciplined. Horrible coaching job by Mullin; I couldn’t believe he used that last time out with 8:30 to play, when he had a tv timeout coming in 30 seconds. Still, this is the type of game we’ve blown in the closing minutes for the past few seasons. I’m not convinced that this costs St. John’s an NCAA bid, and I’m not convinced that we’re primed to go on a roll. Nonetheless, nice to finally win one of these on national television.

I’m not so sure we proved we can close out games. We just got an opponent who didn’t fully capitalize. Ponds and Simon throwing it away was a key possession. Agree but baby steps Dave... Meh, winning these games at the end sometimes just means not playing insanely bad. If that’s what it meant today, I’m fine it. We made plays we seem to never make. Even Josh hitting 2 FTs was enough to gloat about.

Two BE road wins at Hinkle and MSG. Today was the best road win in the conference by any team IMO.
Like I said earlier this year, our approach should be 4-game mini seasons. Went 2-2 first 4, and winning home against Xavier sets up another 2-2 stretch.
In this conference, this year, I’ll take it. Not looking too far ahead but the schedule only gets tougher with road games, so 4-4 through 8 would be fine in my book.

If we had Mac for the first game at Cap One. . .different result. Yes, but injuries are a part of it. We benefitted from injuries against Illinois, Marquette, and some other games. Tournament teams figure out ways to win enough games.

I thought the same thing! I was stunned when he called his final timeout so early in the half. At this point, I take for granted that our opponents will make a run at us. I realize we had stretched the lead to double-digits, but they really could've used that timeout in the closing minutes. I thought that was a huge break for us. One thing I've noticed on our end -- I wish our players would actually be a little bit quicker to call a timeout when we struggle on an in-bound pass or get double-teamed. We almost always try to play through that. Typically I like that call, but late in games when we have multiple timeouts remaining, I would like to see players willing to call the time and keep a possession in our hands.

The Fox Big East standings at the start of our noon game listed us last in the Big East in 10th. The Fox Big East standings at the start of the 2:30 game with Villanova and SHU list us in third. Welcome to life in the Big East.

As I figured, SJU struggled in a close game because of Mullin's "coaching".
Mac was awesome. Many players stepped up to win this game. Solid win on the road.

Before the game today, they had us listed 10th in the BE... Villanova vs. Seton Hall pregame, they have us #3. I know it's all a toss up at this point, but a sight for sore eyes

As much as we get on our coaching, it’s insane how bad St Johns is coached. They have two NBA guards are are 3-5 (could have 2-6 if we didn’t hand them one). That huddle were Mullin said nothing was laughable.
PE’s huddles won’t be confused with John Wooden’s, but at least he addresses his team.

This also tells me that this team can play for a tourney spot this year... Need to clean up the careless mistakes. I’m just not sure how Ewing gets this done. When guys sit and think about it for a few plays they come in more focused but revert to old habits in a hurry it seems. Instill better habits in the players, have them repeat what he wants them to do(not jump in the air without a plan, feed the post ect.) over & over again, day after day... It won't be perfect in the games but it will get better...

Also biggest story that won’t get the headlines is that Pickett looked like a guy who actually had some confidence on offense for this first time since late last year.

One subtle play that deserves mention: SJU down by 2 and misses four close-in attempts. Govan rebounds and triggers a 4 on 0 break with an outlet pass to McClung, who drives for the stuff. A St. John’s defender was trying to get back to prevent the jam by McClung, but was screened off by a combination of Malinowski and LeBlanc, and resulted in the uncontested basket. The two Hoyas saw the SJU player closing, and sealed him off without getting called for an offensive foul. Tremendously smart play.

Amazed at how much the freshmen (McClung especially) have improved during the season. Was expecting the jump to be from more practice over the summer, but they're blossoming before our eyes *knocks on wood*

That was fun!
I hope the offense runs through Mac and Jesse for the rest of the season.

Also biggest story that won’t get the headlines is that Pickett looked like a guy who actually had some confidence on offense for this first time since late last year. I keep hoping he has turned a corner toward a strong finish to his second season. He definitely responded to getting the start today. I thought he was assertive on offense and focused on defense. When Pickett, LeBlanc, Govan, and McClung play well, we are a pretty hard team to beat. Those four guys increasingly seem critical to me. When they play well together, we have decent defensive length and the ability to score in multiple ways.

Huge win! Needed this one and the guys came through big time. It's safe to say that Mac McClung doesn't play like a 3 star, right? Jamorko played well and shot it with confidence and hit two big threes. Jessie came up big with a nice block late and we closed a game! Very happy with this one, avoiding the sweep!

Mac is averaging over 20 ppg in BE play and is likely our best player next year.
I hope to see the same kind of progression out of Akinjo as we head down the stretch.
