I said McAuliffe was a terrible candidate. But sometimes, a candidate’s blunder or miscalculation really does matter. The freshest example was the disastrous declaration by Democrat Terry McAuliffe, the former governor of Virginia who fell short in his bid to regain his old job. “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach,” he said in his second and final debate with GOP nominee Glenn Youngkin. His comment came after Youngkin criticized McAuliffe for having vetoed a bill that would have allowed parents to opt their children out of certain reading assignments. McAuliffe’s gaffe ignited a spectacular display of the demagoguery — and racist signaling — that has accompanied the right’s campaign against the phantom menace of critical race theory, an academic construct that is not even part of Virginia’s K-12 curriculum and is separate from laudable, overdue efforts to assure that students receive an honest and full picture of how race has factored in the country’s history. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/03/mcauliffe-ended-up-dancing-youngkins-choreography/To be fair, I don’t think parents should be telling public schools what they should teach. I’m not even sure how that would work. For every parent that doesn’t want a discussion of race in the classroom as it pertains to US history or even world history, there is a parent who thinks it should be part of the curriculum. If a parent wants to exercise full control of their kid’s education, they are more than welcome to home school them. I agree. Parents can either home school or find a private school that meets their educational standards.

Critical race theory certainly played a role. I’d say Glen ran on education, defending parents, tax reform, creating jobs. I don’t know how important it was for you or other voters, but claiming Youngkin made “education” and “defending parents” a priority, not CRT, rings hollow. That’s like when someone says the south didn’t secede because of slavery, but instead because of “states’ rights” (I.e. a state’s right to allow slavery), “divergent economies” (I.e. one based on slave labor), and “political domination” (I.e. the inability to prevent the election of an abolitionist president). Youngkin had been addressing parents who were concerned about having the right to remove “CRT” from their children’s “education” right up to the point where McAuliffe’s debate gaffe gifted him a broader, scarier cudgel to swing. It’s not like funding or school choice in VA were getting a lot of play in local or national media. I never heard anyone prioritize traditional education buzzwords like standardized tests, the common core, teacher pay, even prayer in school. Frankly, every candidate says their candidacy is about more jobs/education/safety and they’ll do better than their opponent. It’s boilerplate language (see also: Mayor Goldie Wilson). In Nova though, we didn’t see a single ad focusing on education until they started running McAuliffe’s debate flub on loop.

I don’t see any way for Democrats to win this war on CRT in K-12. Republicans are saying “there are monsters under your kids’ bed, and only we are willing to protect your kids from them”; Democrats can only respond with the truth “there are no monsters under their bed.” Republicans then turn around and respond that Democrats are refusing to listen to your fears no matter how unfounded those fears may be. For people primed to believe monsters are real, they want someone to protect them and not assure them their beliefs aren’t grounded the objective reality that the monsters never existed in the first place.

In other words, one party is more grounded in reality. The MAGA GOP simply is not so grounded on a variety of issues, i.e., election fraud, vaccinations, the events of January 6th. We are living in two different worlds, one of which has a robust media ecosystem of reinforcing disinformation and myths - Fox, OAN, Newsmax, etc. To say nothing of Facebook.

What I said could be applied to the core Republican issues.

Haven't seen any losing Dems screaming that the election was rigged unlike your MAGA GOP and sociopath leader. Talk about false equivalence. The "best to him and his family." When's the last time ANY MAGA GOPer lost gracefully? Your Mango Mussolini was a sore winner/ whiner in 2016. Put that in your ditty bag!😁 McAuliffe statement on loss: While last night we came up short, I am proud that we spent this campaign fighting for the values we so deeply believe in. We must protect Virginia’s great public schools and invest in our students. We must protect affordable health care coverage, raise the minimum wage faster, and expand paid leave so working families have a fighting shot. We must protect voting rights, protect a woman’s right to choose, and, above all else, we must protect our democracy. While there will be setbacks along the way, I am confident that the long term path of Virginia is toward inclusion, openness and tolerance for all. Congratulations to Governor-Elect Glenn Youngkin on his victory. I hope Virginians will join me in wishing the best to him and his family. I would like to thank my wife Dorothy, my family, and my incredible campaign team for their tireless efforts and dedication over these past eleven months. And to all of my supporters across Virginia who knocked on millions of doors, made countless phone calls, and talked to their family, friends and neighbors: I am eternally grateful that you joined me on this journey to move Virginia forward. Serving as Virginia’s 72nd governor was the highest honor of my life, and I will never stop fighting to make our Commonwealth stronger and brighter for all.

Trump still hasn’t conceded… Remember when you said you were keeping an open mind about Rudy and Trump’s election fraud claims? Good times!

Is this a joke from the guy who believed voting machine companies conspired with the ghosts of dead socialists because he didn’t want to accept the presidential results? You certainly are a piece of work, Ed.

Always fun to see people who can't put together a coherent argument for their regressive social and scientific views try to dunk.

It's beyond me why you'd be "sure" I would contend that CRT is completely made up. In fact, I don't even know what you're trying to say. Regardless, I said that Youngkin ran on racism (with just enough of a nod to the Trump BS) and that he won by doing so. I don't think there's much to be celebrated in that regard, regardless of one's political affiliations/leanings. But, I hope you enjoy your rum and your cigar. Right well you can say that’s what you believe he ran on all you want, that doesn’t make it true. That’s just your opinion and in my opinion, it is one that is not rooted in fact. If Virginians like myself voted for Glen Youngkin because we support his “racist” platform, you’ll have to explain why we also voted in the first black woman Lt. Governor and a Cuban American Attorney General. Seems like we’re pretty lousy at this racism thing. Just to clear it up for you, I voted for the aforementioned three because I believe in conservative values. So thank you because I did in fact enjoy my cigar and rum. The backlash to CRT is not about hating folks of color its about not wanting to hear the ugly truth about our country's past... Sears embraces this thinking so folks voted for her. She also ran on illegal immigration.. Smh.. www.politico.com/newsletters/the-recast/2021/11/02/virginia-election-2021-critical-race-theory-494946Sears, who declined an interview request, calls CRT teachings “racist” and told Fox News, “it's going to be detrimental to our schools and not what we want.”

You’re waiting for evidence that Democrats manufactured a 150k + vote victory for Biden in Michigan? What are your thoughts on Big Foot? The accusation in this news conference is that the software used to tally votes originated in Venezuela as a means of flipping votes assuring Chavez's election. That is a serious accusation. As yet no evidence has been presented to back up the accusation. If there is any way an inside or outside source can manipulate our election by using this software I want to know if this is true or not. Don't you? Aren't you interested in seeing if there is truth here? If there is no evidence forthcoming, then so be it. If there is evidence I want to hear it rather than hearing you berate me by bringing up big foot.

In Murphy's squeaky finish that is being disputed, Murphy is up 2.3% with >95% reported.
In Glenn Youngkin's win that everyone acknowledges, Youngkin is up 2.4% with >95% reported.
Murphy could easily finish with a greater margin of victory than Youngkin does in Virginia.
