A quick comparison of the OOC from last year to this year. (Using 2017-18 KenPom rather than RPI, since it's probably closer to the new secret NCAA algorithm).
2017-18:
41 Syracuse 146 North Texas 181 @richmond 238 Mount St. Mary's 306 NC A&T 320 Jacksonville 332 Maine 335 Howard 347 Coppin State 349 UMES 351 Alabama A&M
2018-19 so far (guessing
41 @ Syracuse 84 SMU 102 @ Illinois 181 Richmond 184 Liberty 218 Campbell* (possible) 234 vs Loyola Marymount 279 vs South Florida 296 Arkansas Little Rock 310 Central Connecticut State* (possible) 341 Florida A&M* (possible) TBD TBD TBD
A few thoughts: -- One year later, it's even more depressing to lay out last season's schedule, because I don't have to look at it through rose colored glasses. This year's is a definite upgrade, even if it's not yet to where many of us (myself included) would like to see it.
-- We're going from 2 top-200 teams to at least 5. -- We're going from 10 home games and 1 road game to 9 home, 2 away, and 2 neutral. -- We're dropping from 7 300+-ranked KenPom opponents to somewhere between 3 and 5. -- The 5th best team on last year's OOC was NC A&T, which was ranked 306 in KenPom. In this year's, that's replaced with Liberty (184), unless the remaining three games on the schedule give us another surprise decent opponent.
Gradual progress, but still progress.
If we had a base schedule like this next year but with a better tournament and 2 marquee-ish home games (Big 10 challenge, and Cuse or someone to replace them), along with a road game at SMU and maybe one other, I'd be happy.

I know, but at least those are neutral site games, so even if they're as bad this year, it shouldn't hurt quite as much.

I'm expecting that one of the three remaining are a challenge, and the other two are cupcakes or maybe around the 150-200 range. Overall, not a bad noncon schedule, but I think I was hoping for a bit of a tougher lineup. Still, miles better than last year.

Updated to include Appalachian State:

OOC Known Matchups so far:@illinois, November 13, 2018 Jamaica Classic vs. Loyola Marymount, November 16, 2018 vs. South Florida, November 18, 2018 2 Home games vs. Florida A&M/Austin Peay/Central Connecticut/Campbell (Dates TBA) Part of Jamaica ClassicHome vs. Richmond, November 28, 2018 Home vs. Liberty, December 3, 2018 @syracuse, December 8, 2018 Home vs. SMU, December 15, 2018 9 of possible 13 OOC games announced Hoyas likely won't be playing Austin Peay since they're already scheduled to play at South Florida and at Ohio. My guess is Campbell and CCSU. Ohio will be playing Campbell as their second on campus matchup. So the Hoyas will definitely face CCSU at home, and then either Campbell or Florida A&M. www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/mbkb/2018-19/releases/20180906khrckx

Overall, content with the schedule released so far. I believe that Richmond, Liberty, and USF will be improved from last year and hover around that 150-175 range. If we can add one more game against a top 100 hundred opponent then I don't think people can gripe about the non-conference SOS this year.

Is Loyola Marymount in California or the Chicago area?

Everyone seems a lot more impressed with the SOS then me. I will take your word for it that it will be worth watching and not hurt our chances to make the NCAA's.

Even with 2 games to be added, the odds are exceedingly slim that we'll be playing 5 of the worst 25 schools in the country again. Those MEAC and SWAC games really crush you, b/c those teams have almost no chance of finishing better than 300. As of right now, only Florida A&M is a MEAC/SWAC team -- and hopefully we won't have to play them. 100-300 schools have a much greater variation from year to year. It's not exactly the sexiest lineup and won't help us get into the postseason, but it also shouldn't be as much of an anchor as last year's if we end up getting close.

I haven't seen anyone say they're impressed with it. Speaking personally, I wouldn't say I'm impressed, so much as relieved that it's not as terrible as last year. It's at the edge of what I'd consider acceptable for a coach's second year in a rebuilding program, and I think if we can finished 10-1 (or 9-2) against this schedule, a 10-8 BE result would put us on the right side of the bubble. I wanted to see improvement from last year's schedule, and I see it. If there's a similar leap in next year's schedule, that will be something to get excited about.
