I am sure the coaches are working on this with him as well. I am sure Coach has gotten his attention and he is incorporating this into his game.
I am really glad you brought up the fact that the Coaches are coaching him up. There are people who don't believe they do enough between games and during games. They can't run plays or take shots during the games. Just prepare them for different scenarios.

I see the NBA thread where it was discussed by Derrickson how much the staff assisted him in his game.

I thought Akinjo was very good today. Didn’t force any shots, moved the ball, competed on defense. Nice!

I thought James played very well today at MSG against St Johns. Guarding Ponds is really difficult especially because he is allowed to hook on virtually every play that he turns the corner into the lane. 7 assists and 2 late FTs were good stuff.

Those may not be scored officially as turnovers, but watching him go 1-21 or whatever, repeatedly driving and losing the ball.... maddening. Seems like staff made some progress on that front. Today he had another 7 Assists
and 4 TOs Shot 2/3 from three, 2/5 overall. 2/2 FTS, 7 PTS.

He did a solid job guarding Ponds today. He fronted him in the post to deny the entry pass worked hard to stay attached. Also didn’t force too much.

Now James seems a little TOO hesitant to take it inside;he gets past his man and then immediately looks to pass. Gotta develop that judgment and confidence to recognize when to go, when to pull up and shoot, when to push and pass.

I thought the guards did a great job of denying the three and tried to get back most of the time to deny fast breaks. I felt Akinjo really brought it on the defensive side as well as valuing the ball considering he was playing against some of the best stealing guards in the Big East. I suspect Heron and Ponds will both be in the NBA next year. So while he doesn't have his normal points, this game would have gone very differently without his leadership. I think PE has recognized that the mistakes increase when the freshman start getting tired. Seems he has almost broken the the game up into quarters and has the freshman start the game and the second half(3rd quarter)but starts the 2nd and 4th quarters with the upper class bench. He again ends the last few minutes of the half and game with his freshmen. I think this keeps the freshmen from getting too tired and making silly mistakes. Also unlike JTIII, it doesn't seem PE forgets players he's benched forever. I hope one of the coaches is working with James on using the backboard to block the defender on reverse layups. I thought he did this a number of times at the start of the season. I also would like to see more of his floater or a pull up J from just past the free throw line when there is a taller defender in the lane.

He kept taking It to the hoop and hitting the short jumper. In fact I believe he was fouled when hitting one of those late in the game and helped seal the win for us. 9

Very solid game by James on both ends...he's maturing as a floor leader...

HE may have overtaken Ponds (3 assists) in assist to be the league leader today.

In conference play he's leading all Big East players in assists (7.0 apg). His assist to turnover ratio sits at a shade under 2.5-1 (2.9 to's pg).

Really strong second half for the kid. He needed it after struggling offensively for a few games. I think the tough finish with the and 1 really got him going.

Loved everything about his game tonight. Let the game come to him in the first half. Probed, but did not force. Then in the second half with Mac out and Jessie not his usual effective self, James knew he had to look more for his own shot. But he didn’t really force it either. One pull-up from the foul line might have been iffy and I’m probably missing another but man, he was really freaking good. No hesitation on those 3’s, showed a nice floater, and a great finish with his left with contact. He’s playing so much more under control and within the confines of the offense, and he (and the team) is much better for it. Oh, and he had 5 steals. Kid is a dog and fearless. He won’t be afraid of Nova on Sunday, I’m sure of that

Higher that Jahvon Quinery and Cole Swider. Need to have all our freshmen bring it on Sunday.

Given that I leveled a fair amount of criticism at Akinjo after the Marquette and Creighton games, I want to say that I am happy with the progress he has made. After going 1-10 from two against Marquette, and 0-6 against Creighton, he got himself under control and took fewer twos against St. John's and tonight against Xavier.
Even though Akinjo was 0-2 from two against St. John's he was still pretty efficient going 2-3 from three, and obviouslyl tonight Akinjo was even more efficient by shooting well on both twos and threes.
Anyway, after Akinjo ran into trouble by taking too many bad shots he has seemed to get a better handle on avoiding those bad shots and making more passes, etc. It's good progress to see, and happy for both Akinjo and the staff.
