This is the key point. In all these games that go down to the wire, we have nobody who can do anything off the dribble. Mack is a good coach - he knew to blitz our guards on the last regulation possession. Guards who could create would have attacked off that pressure to try to create a good look. Our guards just look to escape the pressure and keep the play alive. So our offense is completely disrupted, and we end up forcing a prayer at the buzzer. Nothing will change until we get guys who can create on their own. Maybe McClung can be that kind of guy. But nobody else currently scheduled to be on the roster next year is, Plus McClung will be a frosh moving way, way up the ladder in terms of the level of talent he is playing against. I would expect us to lose a lot more games like this for the next couple of years, until we get guards/wings that can create their own shots at a BE level.. Yeah, people will say we didn’t run a good play at the end, but a play is just a look that is there or not there. If it’s not there, we are basically screwed. Exactly. And if it isn’t there, you’re left with the ball in the hands of your guards who need to make a play. Guard play is our biggest, most glaring deficiency as we all know.

My god expectations are so absurdly low. Why even play then?
People are aware that upsets happen weekly in college bball and the simple fact is the only games we have won this year are ones where we have been favored. Thats not an opinion thats a fact.
Part of getting better and yes i agree the product has gotten better but the ultimate sign of improvement is winning and then occasionally winning games your not supposed to.
Ok st over Kansas today, st John's over Duke, it happens folks. I am shocked that people are ok w this. Its like "well I expected a down year so any time we lose no matter how atrocious should be expected"
Sorry but I am insanely disappointed after this game. Cuse, Butler, now this game? Its really tough to swallow.

At the end of the game, it’s hard for any team to get good looks, but the difference is we can’t put the ball in a guards hands who can create something or get fouled. That’s basically all X did later. This is the key point. In all these games that go down to the wire, we have nobody who can do anything off the dribble. I cannot see him surviving 3 straight years of a losing record in the BE which would be 5 straight years for the program overall Ewing has to get this fixed next year or by year 3 he is coaching on pins and needles.

We were an 8-point dog at St John's and a 4-point dog at Depaul. Alternative fact, I gather.

Who else was sitting around waiting for the Hoyas to find a way to lose another close game? Life must be so tragic for you to have to experience such agonizing pain again.

My concern is that these close but no cigar losses eventually hurt the players moral. The BE is tough, and lends itself to blow out losses on the road than close games. As a team if you keep making mental mistake after mental mistake to give the game away then you dont deserve to win. These late game performance is going to define Ewing's career. He is either going to be remembered as a Coach Esherick for these late game melt downs or help get the team over the hump and be remembered more of a JTIII Yes, Ewing's legacy is going to be defined by how he does in year one, and we've already ranged him as not as good as JTIII. This makes sense. Or... a team without solid guards is going to have trouble keeping leads even if it succeeds in getting them, so we'll have to wait to see how Ewing recruits and coaches in subsequent years before drawing major conclusions. This is not what I said. Ewing will get at least 3 years, but if the late games melt downs are still happening in year 3, what are you going to think of him as a coach?

The key as it has been for years is to get a true PG. if the team stays as is without a GOOD recruit or grad transfer PG it will be a waste of Govan and Derrickson and what should be an improved Pickett and Blair. Who do you think would be a realistic get at PG for the program? I don't think any of the elite PG fall out as the good ones are committed to schools with solid coaches. Obviously Quinnerly or Ramey would do but you said realistic. I think it's going to have to be a grad transfer. I don't mean settling for the guy that lost his job at SD. No use in worrying about it now without knowing who will be transferring. If next year was a total rebuild I would say don't bother with a grad transfer but I think next years team can be good enough to sniff the tourney with a good PG.I also think next year is a huge make or break for the next few years as the talent will really fall off without MD and JG.

Too me, disappointing is losing to DePaul at home with 15 turnovers. Even in this OT, all Xavier did was hit FTs. What can you do? The refs called everything.

Yeah, lets put this in a little context people. We took the #6 team in the nation into OT on the road. There has been clear, undeniable improvement over the course of the season from both individual players and the team as a whole. Did we blow a chance for a great win? Absolutely. Frustrating? Sure. But with a few more pieces and continued development from our underclassmen, is this a competitive team next year? Does anyone out there still say no? This is where I am and I think what everyone has to understand. This team got trounced by Nova and Creighton both within the last month. Now, in back to back games we took X and Creighton to the wire on the ROAD. Clear development from guys, better execution of a gameplan both offensively and defensively (save for late game but PE will get better with play calling in those situations with more seasoning), and guys just playing really hard. For those complaining about losing another close one late, sure it sucks and it feels like it's been years since we've won of these. But you have to try and separate out what happened the last couple years and this year. It's a new regime, although right now the players might be the same for the most part. It's not Ewing's fault that his junior Center doesn't have the IQ to not set a moving screen there. Or his fault that Jagan hit Bluiett (admittedly on a questionable call). This is just the players he was dealt and all he can do right now is try and maximize what he can get out of them. Which thus far, has been quite a lot. If we're losing these games consistently this time next year again, then yes, I will be concerned and more frustrated. But right now, let's watch this team get better and keep rooting for them to break through and get one of these. Oh and recruit like heck

We’d all be over the moon had we pulled this game out but what’s the poing of being Editeded we didn’t win a game, no one thought we should win? We were close, we could’ve won it, and it sucks to lose, but we’ve got at least 8 games left to keep working at it.

Free throw disparity killed us. X-men getting to the line 42 times to 17 times for Hoyas is crazy. X-men "sold" a lot of fouls where they weren't touched. The refs not understanding what a charge is was crazy (if we don't get two charges need to pull the plug or ease up). Hoyas hit 82% the stripe and X-men 75%, but that difference at looks from the line is crazy. Exactly. We beat them at everything else. But 25 more free throws is insane. If we had eight more FT we win going away. Every defensive stance by us was a block and every defensive non stance by them was a charge. I counted about 5 of these. Now a string point guard would find ways to get Jesse more touches down low in the second half and Pickett and Blair more open looks but the Hoyas were beaten on the line and we have not been called for fouls like that all year.

some really horrible mental errors and a couple of mind melting shots out of timeouts did the team in. even with the fouls, the game should have been won.

He’s coached what 20 games? Way too early to talk about career-defining anything. Is Ewing getting fired this year, NO. So let me ask you, if these late game melt downs are happening in year 3 how will you view Ewing? If Ewing gets this team to a Sweet 16 in year 3 how will you view Ewing? Too broad a question to give you an answer. In year 3 if we’re 3-8 in conference play losing close games, doesn’t matter (barring injuries to key players cause that can be hard to overcome) I’d say it’s not a good situation. If we’re 8-3 cause we let one squeak away out of 11, no I’m not jumping off the deep end because of it. People act like we’re the only team that loses close games, the Johnnies lost 11 if them until closing out the Duke game this season. 3 of Duke’s 4 losses are by 5 or less. Honestly, winning close games starts at the defensive end in my mind. Can you get a stop? We didn’t. Dickerson and Mulmore both sent guys to the free throw line. Poor defense and hustle plays that we didn’t make tonight (the offensive foul on Derrickson, Pickett trying to dribble that basketball out of the ground instead of wrapping it up). I think Ewing is trying to instill a culture where both of those things are paramount. My hope is that with that culture change late game situations get better, just gotta wait and see.

Assuming MD and Govan return, I like the future. Where are we worried about them going? Europe? Yes. I don't think they are NBA material. But you can make 6 figures in some European leagues and also in China, Australia, New Zealand (where Kevin Braswell carved out a long career). Brandon Bowman played in an Israeli league when I was stationed in the Middle East. I always wanted to show up at one of his games in Tel Aviv sporting some Hoya gear. And L.J. Peak left to play in the G-League because of his family commitment.

If he gets some guards/wings who can create their own shot - he'll win his fair share of tight games. If he does not - then it would be fair to view him as unsuccessful. But his failure would be more as a recruiter than as a game coach. He is clearly working his butt off on the recruiting trail, but he has a tough sell after quite a few years of good point guards having little interest in Georgetown because of our Princeton-based style of play (whether that perception was accurate or not, that was clearly the perception in the final stages of JTIII's career). Ewing has a tough hill to climb on this recruiting challenge, but if he fails - I don't think it will be for lack of effort.
