I am not arguing against a stipend... ....but what is Gtown cost for tuition and room and board about 70k per? 280k over 4 years seems like a pretty nice stipend to me... That's peanuts compared to the market value of a 5-star recruit. Not to mention you can't turn around and sell your admission slot for cash to pay the family's bills. Title 9

Charlie Pierce with another bizarre example of the phenomenon I was just posting about. How do you write an article today about this unfolding scandal and nowhere even mention the name "Sean Miller"? Writing article #3,392 to make fun of Mark Emmert is the absolute laziest thing journalists can do. I can't believe that a story pitch of "yes the NCAA sucks, but coaches who cheat are terrible and should be banned because not everyone does it" would apparently qualify right now as a novel take on what is unfolding.

Jeff Goodman was too busy washing Chris Mack's car and polishing his shoes to cultivate a NCAA or FBI source. It is utterly disgraceful that Goodman hasn't said anything publicly about Mack's view on this.

Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas program has received more negative media attention for its non-conference schedule than Izzo got about the sex abuse scandal or than Miller has gotten yet on this wiretap story. Is there some way we can figure out how to pin the MEAC schedule on Mark Emmert?

What does the stipend mean? I assume it’s a normal thing that schools do? Thanks in advance

The real problem is that this isn't a matter of "fairly compensating" the players at large. This is about shoe companies and agents wanting to pile money onto a small set of kids when they are in high school and/or freshman so that IF they make the NBA, the shoe companies/agents are well positioned to profit. Most players in Division I (90%+) get more value in their scholarship dollars than they would ever get from shoe companies or other boosters.

I don't know Dan, I thought there must have have been a long standing rule banning anything written by my old friend Charie Pierce. After all his several year rant back in the 80s against Georgetown and Thompson while inventing the nickname Idi Amin for Big John among many other opines that today would border on racist, if not totally politically incorrect. And no Charlie is the furthest thing from one, Just a very confusing mind of thought the main reason he was denied admission to GU and ended up at Marquette back in the 70s. Just another reason to ban written opinion.

In the early part of the conversation with Dave Zirin, Monica McNutt, point guard of the 2011 women's team, offers her thoughts on the college basketball scandal.

Perhaps, finally, no one cares about his opinion on this and the many other topics on which he knows nothing... Amen!

Yeah, glad we got a real sharp one in there now, no more of that First in Class nonsense. You miss my point completely. Just as I never cared about his NCAA bracket or what was on his playlist at the Vineyard, or who he liked in the Super Bowl, his opinion on the NBA and the college bribery issue is of absolutely no moment to me. Nor would the opinions of the 43 before him or the one after him.

Just thirty minutes after the Board of Regents meeting was scheduled to begin this afternoon. Hmmm. Fill in idle speculation here.
EDIT: Miller's press conference is scheduled for ninety minutes before the scheduled Board of Regents meeting. Attorneys for Miller and Arizona have been taking. Maybe there is an amicable settlement of the contract to be announced here.

Ok. Just watched live stream of Miller press conference on Arizona Daily Star Facebook page. He strongly denied making any payments at all or participating in any scheme to pay players, expressed appreciation to the university, his family and players, and said that he looked forward to coaching the team to a Pac 12 title. Called ESPN's report defamatory to him, his family and his players. Miller took no questions.

But if this conversation really never happened, I'm not sure why it took six days to hold a press conference denying it.
