I want good players who can contribute at the Big East level while fitting in well with the team and university. The positions will work themselves out if we have enough of those guys.

Was that Darren Buchanan the 6’7 wing from D.C. behind the bench at the Seton Hall game? Does it matter? I guess it does matter, nine post followed my statement. We can't predict who'll be here next year or not, that's part of the Transfer Portal game, the staff have to recruit every position every year!

I want good players who can contribute at the Big East level while fitting in well with the team and university. The positions will work themselves out if we have enough of those guys. To a large degree I agree with that sentiment, "the positions will work themselves out", but there needs to be some balance and versatility on the team that allows them to not be victimized by bad matchups so often. There is no doubt that a 6'7" player can play power forward in the Big East, if he has the right body type, athleticism and mentality. Being able to defend in the post and being an aggressive and effective rebounder is the key. Rebounding is about more than just height and length, as Aminu has shown all year, but at some point it becomes hard for the 6'5" guy to compete with the 6' 10" guy if both are similar athletes. The current team has plenty of height/length with the (3) 7' centers. The issue is that none of them are really versatile enough to play anything but a traditional center position and they all struggle with defense on the perimeter. Only Ryan has a functional offensive game and his offense is really limited to scoring in the paint at this point. That may improve for him as he develops but other teams do not currently defend him when he in not in the paint, which allows the other teams center to play a one man zone and contest pretty much every shot in the paint. I don't know enough about Buchanan's game to say if he can be an effective power forward in the Big East, but it is a position the Hoyas need help at for next season. Bass looks like a similar player, and he is very athletic, but from his comments he seems to view himself as a small forward. Billingsley has the size/length to fill that role and I am hopefully that another year in the strength and conditioning program and more experience will allow him to flourish in that role.
