McClung is sort of his own thing... I'm having trouble thinking of comparable after watching some game videos. What I will say is that he's very athletic with a host of tools the coaches should be able to build on, and he has both a jumper and drive game, to keep defenses honest. My biggest takeaway is that he seems to be just at the start of a blossoming period, in terms of his skills. He took a big leap last year (even the kid himself has admitted that), and I think it was very smart of the staff to recognize that this is a guy who could develop in a big way.
My feeling is that he will be an immediate contributor who makes others better with his work ethic, and also is a hell of a lot of fun for the other guys to play with. As team chemistry on court seems to me to have been a big problem over the past few years, I think Mac is a very very good signing by the staff, with a very high ceiling.

Robert Pack is the best comparison. More like Joey Brown or Matt Causey I did not mean he is Robert Pack, just is a physical guard who plays downhill and will excite with some dunks on peoples heads. That was Packs game. he was an ok perimeter player not outstanding. But was more scorer and passer out of the PG spot.

while this is a stereotypical comparison from a racial perspective, McClung's game (based on highlights clips only) reminds me of a poor man's Grayson Allen. About the same size (and race!), very athletic, seems to also have a good outside shot. McClung also plays with an aggressive attitude offensively, always in attack mode and going to the rim at every opportunity. hopefully minus the tripping and general punk/diva stuff that has been such a problem for Allen.

He doesn't play good comp in HS. I'd focus more on his AAU play than HS.

Grayson Allen is 6-5 wing and a slimey snake. Mclung is 6-2 point guard (especially if he wants to make the next level)

What I like from what I've seen of AAU stuff is that he doesn't seem to force things -- he knows he has talented guys around him, and he plays like it, instead of being a ball hog or trying to do everything, like he does with his HS team. Shows he knows his limitations, and also that he knows the way to win is to make sure talented teammates get the ball. For a guy who's only been serious about the game since 7th grade, he could have a few "leaps" in his game coming, especially if he works at it hard.

And because of that feeling, I decommitted.” According to McClung, Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell and his assistants were “very understanding and respectful” of his decision.“I had received many other offers and interest from many other great schools immediately after my decommittal,” McClung said. “Although I was very excited about those opportunities, during my visit at Georgetown those opportunities did not seem to matter to me anymore.” McClung said his official visit to the Georgetown campus in Washington, D.C. was the clincher.“I saw myself and it felt right at Georgetown. I wanted to be a part of this iconic program,” McClung said. A talk with new Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing also played a role in the McClung decision.“Coach Ewing showed me videos of the way he wanted his point guard to play,” McClung said. “He said that style is my style and that is why he had wanted me to commit to Georgetown from the start. “I spoke with another Hall of Famer in John Thompson Jr. He told me how excited he was when my recruitment reopened and how I played like a Hoya.” After backing off his committal to Rutgers, McClung said he received offers and interest from Boston College, Seton Hall, Clemson, Maryland, Wichita State, Tennessee, Stanford, Boise State, ETSU and Marshall.“I am very excited that the recruiting process is complete for me and I can focus on doing my best for Gate City this season,” McClung said. “I would like to thank Coach Ewing and his entire staff for allowing me this opportunity. In addition, I would like to thank my high school coaches at Gate City and all of the coaches at Team Loaded for helping me achieve this goal.”

I've been watching all the full game films I can find online of McClung (Gates City/Loaded Va). I really think he's much better then what the evaluators have stated about him. He's very smart on the floor. Doesn't force the issue unless he needs to. It's been said he doesn't play against top level competition at his high school. That looks to be factual but he did what a high level player should do when he's playing against lesser talent, HE DOMINATED his competition including a 64 point game without any gimmicks or trickery that youngest Ball kid did last year. The fact that he dominated lesser comp every chance he got tells me he's gotta a heck of motor and is ultra competitive. He's got some Dawg in him which I love.
Team Loaded Va was properly named this summer. THEY WERE LOADED with talent in both the 17 & 18 classes. From everything I could find, no player on team averaged more than 12 points while spreading 32 minutes of game action among the 10-12 players consistently. Nobody really dominated the ball, the shots or the minutes. Players did have their moments but a breakout game was 16+ points. The team was so balanced that Llewelyn (Princeton commit) dropped 40+ at Addidas Nations after the loaded season was over.
From what I can figure and please correct me if I'm wrong, but this was McClung's first spring/summer on any circuit. I know he didn't play with Loaded Va 17U last summer and I didn't see him listed with the 16U Loaded Va team. He plays at a small rural high school in the middle of nowhere Virginia. This explains to me why the evaluators aren't buzzing about him and he doesn't have a 4 or 5 star affixed to his name. Personally he reminds me a lot of Seventh Woods (UNC) except we knew about 7th Woods when he was in 8th grade. 7th Woods is slightly taller but McClung is probably the better perimeter shooter Of the 2 at the same point in their development. Woods also played on a a shoe circuit team that allowed/needed him to shine. Those alongside McClung not playing on a national level for multiple years might be the reasons why Woods was top 100 and McClung isn't.
McClung is very much a late bloomer on the national level and I really do think that Coach Ewing and staff gotta a steal in him. He's a 3 level scorer who was very unselfish this summer with the Loaded bunch showing that he can be a very good playmaker/facilatator. I am very excited to see what he will do in a Hoyas uniform. I expect him to get very good minutes as a freshman and surprise a lot of people.

Very good analysis...based on his lower level HS and limited AAU experience, nonetheless off set by his work ethic and motor, I would think we'll see his greatest leap in growth/development between his Freshman and Soph years-after his acclimation to the higher level of ball.

Should be ready to be full time PG/floor general by 19-20 season if not sooner.

Hmmm? Athletic kid who plays for a small, out of the way high school and was under exposed in AAU ball - seem to remember a kid from Missouri that fit that bill.

I don't know why but I feel this McClung thing is kind of a big moment for the program. Just having guards that can fly and attack the rim and opponents via trapping is exciting.
Patrick's' Hoya teams played relentless defense, crashed the glass and featured superior athletes. If Mac can deliver these we are in business.
