Well, obviously a bad week for news from Georgetown: yesterday the news that the director of track and field, Coach Mike Smith was leaving, and now Paul. I hope we have stopped the bleeding now!

When Bennimon left:
"Jerrelle is transferring and although he has not announced where he will go, wherever it is, we wish him all of the best." Coach Thompson said.
When Nikita left:
"Nikita expressed the interest to transfer to a school where he knows he will get more playing time than he feels he will get here," Thompson said. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors and appreciate his hard work."
When Macklin left:
"We appreciate the hard work he put in at Georgetown, both on and off the floor," Thompson said. "We wish him the best in the future."
All of those are from the guhoyas.com press releases announcing those transfers. Interesting that JT3 is silent in White's press release.

This sucks. Feels a lot like when Demetrius Hunter announced his transfer. Like Hunter, he appeared to face another season of being affected by injuries, so maybe he figures he can take the year off from playing, move on (perhaps closer to home) and have two good years left.
In any case, I'll be rooting for him when he gets back on the court.

Good luck to Paul.
He was actually the recruit in his class I was most excited about, so it's disappointing that it didn't work out here.
That said, I think that the year off for a transfer will help Paul get healthy -- which is doesn't seem like he is yet -- and I hope wherever he goes, he has a great career.

I thought the same thing. If I remember correctly, JT3 even stated some positive things in the announcement by the school when Stephen Domingo (Couldn't find the statement online) transferred. The brevity in Paul White's release statement from the school athletics department and the absence of any comment from JT3 leads me to believe JT3 and athletic department weren't at all in favor of this decision and this was Paul White's choice.

Let's call it like it is. Paul was very far away from where he needed to be and by all accounts ...did not look good this summer. Even if healthy, he was going to struggle to get time and injured or not, he was always going to be athletically challenged at SF.

Even if healthy, he was going to struggle to get time and injured or not, he was always going to be athletically challenged at SF. This is an "interesting" statement or spin on White transferring. We have no idea what Paul White could have developed into while in a Hoyas uniforms. He showed some flashes as a freshman that he could develop into a very good player. Injury took away his sophomore year. In terms of his athleticism and him being athletically challenged, Paul White showed he is just as much if not more athletic then Otto Porter was and Otto used his lack elite athleticism to be a BIG EAST POY, 1st Team All American and in several post season awards he was runner up to National Player Of The Year. I'm in no way saying White and Otto are equivalent players and by most accounts Otto is an inch taller and a longer reach but athletically they are very very similar. Imo White was probably more athletic then Otto was when he suited up for the Hoyas. So I completely disagree with the statement that Paul White was always going to be athletically challenged at the Small Forward position.

Obviously this is unfortunate; Paul had a solid freshman campaign and seemed multi-skilled.
But I never begrudge any kid transferring for what he reasonably believes will be better opportunities elsewhere. The unique injury situation here presents one rationale (although he presumably could have medically red shirted here this year if that were the entire concern).
From a programmatic perspective, you don't want kids that are going to get key minutes at any point in their career to leave. But it's not necessarily an unhealthy sign if good players decide that even though they are good, they won't get those key minutes here because of even better players on the roster or in the pipeline. It's great if kids decide they want to stay even in that situation. But it is a sign of good talent in depth if they don't.
We wont know until after the fact if that is the case. Obviously, even if it seems to be the case, it may turn out that Paul was wrong about the relative strength of other players compared to him. But if it is the case, then this is not a negative for anyone.
In any event, good luck to Paul!

Maybe. Then again, it seems pretty normal with regard to how the staff usually handles these things. The announcement was just made. I wouldn't be surprised if JT3 has a comment similar to those quoted within the next week or so. It's also possible that PW is transferring for reasons not related to BB in which case it makes it more likely that a comment from the staff would be slower in coming. Regardless, Paul (not that I know the kid even a little bit) seems like a great kid and a team guy. I hope that he gets fully healthy and is able to reach his potential. I'm hoping that in a little over a year from now we're discussing how bad of a loss Paul was because he's playing so well elsewhere. Best of luck to Paul (unless, of course, he ends up at Southern Canada).

Who was the primary recruiting assistant for White? With staff turnover, a serious injury that led to a lost year and a supposed change in the style and approach to the offense, it is easy to see why he might want to go elsewhere. As to what he might have brought to the program, it is useless to speculate. At the time of his commitment it was viewed as another strong addition from the Midwest, which seemed then to be a targeted area for recruiting.
I watch the kids on the bench who are not playing each year and that always influences my view. Watching Tyler Adams was a joy as he appeared to represent the ultimate teammate. Though considerably more reserved, I saw White suffer through his injury last year while still cheering his team on through a tough season. I wish him great success in his future.

I'm sorry to see Paul go. He was one of the smartest players on the team and we clearly missed him last season. I got to see him a couple times in Kenner, and it was clear he hasn't recovered fully. The high bball i.q. was still there and the good fundamentals, but he wasn't keeping up with the game. He could have wanted more time to recover and didn't want to risk another year of eligibility while he got back to speed. In any event, good luck to Paul, and I hope to see him doing well wherever he ends up.

Sad news for GU... I was looking forward to seeing how Paul would (if) fight his way back into the starting five, which would have meant a tremendously deep team. IMO, this has to do with Paul not fully fit, thus not being able to get starter minutes, and losing another year of eligibility. Good luck to the kid and wish him the best!

In terms of his athleticism and him being athletically challenged, Paul White showed he is just as much if not more athletic then Otto Porter was... From all his GU games and his high school's televised games, that's not what I saw. Maybe he gets there in the future, but Otto was ahead athelically as a freshman.

White was not as athletic as Otto. Versatile yes, but not as athletic. This isn't even close. The only other players in recent years with the complete package of versatility, IQ & athleticism to Otto are Jeff & Greg W.

Athleticism ain't everything: Matt Stainbrook had virtually none yet he was a devastating college center.
The injury Paul has is in a crucial area for lateral movement and hops... And Paul didn't start with a lot of athleticism in the first place. I could see it taking another year to get back to where he was. By all reports a great kid - I hope he lands somewhere that he can succeed and shine.
