I haven't posted to this thread much at all other than tonight. It was news to me when they told me talking about firing the coach was not acceptable on the board even though this thread's been out there for this long. Seemed odd if they are the rules. Don't try to deflect, it is what is is is and as much as those in control will delete or bury threads on the subject doesn't change anything. Fair enough - but as to your other point, the moderators have allowed pretty free discussion on this over the last year, as evidenced by the lengthy discussions and 134 pages. I think they have until tonight when it got much more serious with alot more people. I love Dan and the Mod's for what they do and for the forum. Thankless job but I think they are invested in a certain side and if you are a mod you have to keep it level.

If he's on the hot seat, I'd understand it. This is pretty bad. But you have to give him the chance to make something of this season. The outlook doesn't look great, but whether he's the right guy right now or not, he's a major figure in our program's history, and has always represented Gtown with class. He needs to produce, but let's give him a shot this year to right the ship, and treat him with dignity if it doesn't work out.

It's not about the current season. He's on borrowed goodwill this season. Need to look at the full picture rather than the three games this season.

We don't have an heir apparent, anyway.

Then get a real basketball coach, ideally someone young with some fire in the belly...and with no ties to the Thompson family.

The AD job is a demotion, I doubt JT3 would want the position, and we cannot afford to pay JT3 and a high quality coach.

Were this the end of the season, I think he'd have to be gone right now. I suspect he'd probably resign before being fired.
I have to imagine after last night, there's no confusion internally that missing NCAAs is likely the end of his tenure so I think this conversation is moot. He's going to get the rest of the season, there's no doubt about that, unless he leaves of his own accord. Where we are in March? That's on him and the team, but I can't imagine any realistic scenario where he's not aware that he's coaching for his job right now.

It is frustrating to come on this board and read the "relax" and "the season just started" comments. As if these issues are minor and only a few weeks old? The first step to fixing a problem is admitting there is one.

The first step to fixing a problem is admitting there is one. I don't understand the fixation with posters who are trying to maintain optimism (I am not on of them at this point). There are maybe 5 comments like that over the numerous threads. The posts expressing frustration and calling for JTIII to step down are probably in the hundreds now, many by the same few posters saying the same things over and over. The Arkansas St. game thread probably had more posts along the lines of "where are all the JTIII supporters now?" than posts with any type of substantive analysis of the game. And those posts were almost jubilant. That some posters can be so puerile, that's frustrating to me.

Bingo. Perfectly said. Great ambassador; marginal coach. I don't think you know what "marginal" means. You're right KC - JT3 is now worse than marginal (on edge of acceptability). But by all means carry on with your snarky apologist refrain from the last 5 seasons. It's every bit as tired as this topic.

It is time for a change. I just hope that we don't go 16-16 and this puts it off for another year. If we are going to miss the NCAA tournament then a change needs to be made and if the only way for that change to be made is if we go 7-24 then so be it. I hate to see my team lose, but I would rather see it win in the long term. Short term pain for long term gain. Something needs to change and the change should have been made after loss season.

I am not optimistic, but I also think it's ridiculous to call the season a total loss (and call for the coach's head) after three games. We all get it - there are many people on this board who have been clamoring for a change at the top. If we end up getting to the end of the season and don't make the NCAA tournament, that will be 3 of 4 years, and a lot of people are going to agree with those of you calling for change.
The argument that I and a lot of JT3 supporters have made in the past is that he is very skilled at getting us to the NCAA tournament with good seeds, and if we keep that up we will win eventually in March. I still firmly believe that, but only if JT3 can consistently get us to March. If he cannot do that, then that's a problem.
But for those clamoring for change, it's always important to think about what that change means and what will come after if there is change. It's easy to assume things will get better, but the sports landscape is full of examples where that's simply not the case.

It's easy to assume things will get better, but the sports landscape is full of examples where that's simply not the case. Look at the teams we have lost to over the past 2 seasons. It (almost literally) could not get worse. Let's look at the bright side: The entire atmosphere around the program needs to change. The way the Thompsons run things has created apathy among students and many long time fans, and in some cases bitterness. If you're winning, people suck it up and accept the lack of transparency, indifference toward boosters and season ticketholders and arrogance with the media. When you're piling up catastrophic losses and still running the program the exact same way ... that doesn't work quite so well. I'm starting to think that an utter trainwreck of a season, as painful as it would be to watch and suffer through, may be a good outcome for the long-term health of this program. Hitting reset doesn't always work - look at DePaul - but FFS what we're putting out on the court at this point isn't working either, and we're getting the same tired old mantras after every humiliating loss. Such a depressing situation.

At this moment change is necessary. And the change must come sooner rather than later. We can not continue we this poor performance. I think this is mental now that is affecting both the players and the coaching staff. I can not imagine how JTIII can get out this downward spiral.

I think you have to give him the rest of the season for all the reasons mentioned by other posters.
However, making the NCAA Tournament is now going to be a very uphill battle. Two home losses, one to a team that will likely have a 200+ RPI and another to what looks like a bubble team, are a big problem. It's the same thing that happened last year with poor early season losses. There is very little margin for error from this point forward. UCONN's RPI isn't going to be great, so beating them may not mean much. Need to go at least 3-1 against the Maui teams + Syracuse, really 4-1 if you include that group plus UCONN. Then also need to run the table on all the other non-conference games and go at least 10-8 in the Big East.
Still possible, and you have to give JT3 that chance, but very little margin for error.

Do you think he gets fired if we end up with a winning record overall, .500 big east record, and a NIT bid?

Does anyone have an idea on his contract status? Meaning how long does his deal run until?

But missing the NCAA Tournament 3 out of 4 years, with the advantages that Georgetown has, would certainly get somebody fired in any other situation (i.e., one where the coach's dad didn't put the program on the map and literally hovers over the program on a daily basis). I think it's possible JT3 walks away if he puts up the record you suggest this year.
