This game should be all about Josh Smith.
Coming away from the Marquette game they just lost, SHU's coach Willard was quoted often about how SHU has struggled to defend the frontcourt of so many teams and MU was the latest to exploit them. He was talking about Marquette!
If Josh does not recognize an opportunity to have a BE player of the week type of performance tonight, I really do not know what to do with him anymore. This should be a dominant performance for the big man. If we can get that from Josh, I like our chances, given a guy like Gibbs does not go off for like 7-7 on threes.
I just want to see the team play well, that is what I am looking for more than anything, I want the Hoyas to show us they can still play good basketball.

I think Josh is the key for the game and all games moving forward. I would really like to see him play less in the 1st half. Some short stints to keep him in the flow but save his energy and more importantly, his fouls for the 2nd half. He fouls 6.5 times per 40 min. A number of teams have used the first few possessions to attack him and get him into foul trouble. If we can get him into the late stages of a game, which typically slows down, with him fresh and not in foul trouble, that would help with our late game execution.

Unfortunately, over the last few years the Prudential Center has been a troubling place to play for the Hoyas. Not as bad of a house of horrors as the Bradley Center...but it has not been a very good place for the Hoyas (or their NY based fans) for the last few years. The Hoyas have only played there four times since I moved to NYC in 2008, and the team has gone 1-3: January 25, 2009 - Seton Hall prevailed 65-60 over the Greg Monroe led #14 Georgetown Hoyas who managed to shoot 3 of 22 from three...that was the third loss in what would turn out to be a soul crushing death march in which the team went 4-10 to finish the season and get bounced in the first round of the NIT. That was Seton Hall's first Big East victory of the year making them 10-9 (1-6). January 18, 2011 - #23 Georgetown squeaked out at 80-75 victory, after being down for most of the game. The Hoyas only took the lead in the last minute and then closed out the game after intentionally fouled Seton Hall when they were up 3 with 5 seconds to go because they were only in the bonus (shooting 1-and-1) and Juju Vaughn promised JTIII he would get the rebound, which he did. Seton hall was 8-11 (2-5) at the time. February 21, 2012 - #9 Georgetown got blown out 55-73 by Seton Hall who benefitted from an absolutely unconscious Jordan Theodore (29 points and 5-5 from three). The loss knocked us out of contention for one of the Byes to the Quarters in the BET. February 20, 2014 - Seton Hall completed the season sweep of the Hoyas for the first time in a decade, blowing them out 82-67. To make matters worse for the New York based fans, this was less than a week after we watched the team get embarassed by SJU in the Garden 82-60. Those two blowouts ended what had been a pretty respectable four game win streak over Michigan State, DePaul, Butler and Providence that actually had people talking about the possibility that the team might make the NCAAs. The roadtrip to the tristate area effectively ended that talk. The real stomach-turner in reading this post is the recognition that tonight's SHU team will easily be the best of all the teams we have played up there. We are 2.5 point favorites, but I have a sick feeling and will be pleasantly surprised if we win. To me, the season really comes down to this next little homestand.

Wow, total lack of respect for Hoyas. Okay, here's what I'm going to do. Tonight and for every one of the Hoyas remaining regular season games I am going to bet on the Hoyas based on the spread. Of course these will be "mythical" bets. Tonight I'm putting $1,000 on the Hoyas.By regular season's end I expect to have won enough to pay for my grandkids college education. Of course since I will be using their college education fund to play with there is a chance that in my mythical betting world they may wind up with a long career in the fastfood industry instead. Stay tuned. Early Money on the Hoyas so line has now swung to the Hoyas 2 pt favorites. Sticking with my bet on the Hoyas however not willing to stick with them if the line goes above 3. I don't see this game as anything but a nail biter.

If we are coming to a consensus that tonight's game and the rest of the season turns on Josh Smith, I'd like to stop this train now please so I can get off.

A win tonight would take some pressure off the small bubble that has emerged beneath our 7-5 conference record.
Got to go minimum 3-3 down the stretch to stay above .500 in conference and be solid for NCAAs.
2-4 and a first round conference tourney exit would be a brutal way to close. I wouldn't want to defend a 17-13 record to the committee, no matter how strong the schedule is.
Tonight is a tough game, but an extremely meaningful game to all of the eyes watching.

If we are coming to a consensus that tonight's game and the rest of the season turns on Josh Smith, I'd like to stop this train now please so I can get off. Not seeing why GU is a favorite tonight. As BD states, this is the best SHU team since the days of (Andre Barrett? Ty Shine?) - I don't know, but yeah, in a while. GU has looked terrible since @nova save a historically bad shooting performance by Creighton. Momentum is definitely not in our favor right now. Vegas is usually right, however, so let's hope so in this case. And let me add another voice of objection to "our season will rise or fall on the broad shoulders of Joshua Smith" train. That is not a winning formula. Josh is gifted with soft hands and nice touch around the basket, and he has had some standout performances this season, but I think it is unfair and unrealistic to expect consistency from him. He's still a liability on defense, and has a tendency to disappear when things (e.g., fouls, physical defense) go against him. He's not going to all of a sudden flip a switch and average 15 and 10 for the rest of the season. In each game, Thompson should give him an opportunity to establish his presence in the paint early on and, if unsuccessful, go to Plan B.

We went from a team that was competing for 1st and 2nd place in the BE to discussing the least we need to do to make the NCAA tourney. Sigh. That's Georgetown basketball, I guess. But were we really competing for 1st and 2nd place, or was that really just a function of the schedule being loaded early with our 4 Marquette/Creighton games? Good point. Although the pendulum swing the other way is likely because our middle third was quite difficult. Looking at Gasaway's efficiency margins for conference only, SJ and SHU are only marginally better than Depaul on a whole, and we have home and home remaining. SHU's numbers are bit lowered by injury, but while I'm not super optimistic this result comes about, the board shouldn't go into full final-four-projection mode if we hit a few timely 3s and go 5-1 down the home stretch. Big East W-L Pace PPP Opp. PPP EM 1. Villanova 8-2 64.7 1.10 0.95 +0.15 2. Butler 8-3 65.4 1.08 1.00 +0.08 3. Georgetown 7-5 63.6 1.04 0.99 +0.05 4. Xavier 6-6 65.6 1.09 1.06 +0.03 5. Providence 7-4 64.5 1.05 1.04 +0.01 6. Seton Hall 5-6 64.4 1.03 1.06 -0.03 7. St. John's 4-6 65.8 1.07 1.10 -0.03 8. DePaul 6-6 64.9 1.05 1.09 -0.04 9. Marquette 3-8 64.3 0.96 1.02 -0.06 10. Creighton 2-10 62.4 0.97 1.11 -0.14 (cleaner numbers here: johngasaway.com/2015/02/10/tuesday-truths-on-the-shoulders-of-giants-edition/)

If we are coming to a consensus that tonight's game and the rest of the season turns on Josh Smith, I'd like to stop this train now please so I can get off. That is not what I meant to say in my post. I read the quotes from SHU about how they have struggled all year to defend the post and I immediately thought this could be the final opportunity for Josh to step up and be the reason we get back on the winning side of things. I have no desire for the SEASON to rest on Josh's shoulders. I have been his biggest critic lately. I just think this specific team offers him an opportunity. Actually if he does not seize it, I will likely give up on the possibility of him as a net positive for this team going forward.

Villanova did a fair amount of keeping Smith out from getting good position, then doubling immediately on the catch. This relies on the fact that Smith isn't a good enough passer to find the open man and that the rest of the team isn't good enough at moving it around the perimeter to find the open shot before the defense recovers. I think this is a pretty sound assumption. If Smith can get in good position before the catch I think he'll have a good game, but this requires consistent effort without the ball in his hands, which I'm frankly not banking on.

I hate to say any game is a must win but this team better come out of the lockerroom angry and with a huge chip on there shoulders. This game to me is all about the coach. Not if the coach is good or bad but did JT3 mentally prepare this team for this key game. I was watching Uconn last night and they went against the number 1 team in the country and they were so mentally prepared for the game it wasnt even funny. The looks on those girls faces at tipoff time told the whole story. Uconn punched s carolina in the mouth once then twice and they rolled. Thats what we have to do. Come out ready to play and execute!! This game will shw mw what this coach is made of..
