Hoyas have put up 83, 52, 74, 63, 49; 61, 73 pts against Ed cooley coached Providence and Fairfield (the last 2) teams. So yes 2 stinkers in there but still average score of 65pts. Our Avg over the 5 years these games happened was 68.8 pts. We're also 4-1 against providence and 2-0 against Fairfield. Was just responding to the comment that they were attentive defensively, which seemed out of character for them to Aristides. My point is that Cooley has made his name as a defensive coach. And you are forgetting the absolute clunker at BC (2006?) when he was an assistant. But yes, point taken that we have had recent success against them/him. But now that Dunn is healthy, you add Henton who kills us, Harris who is pretty good, a good recruiting class, and our offensive woes and I see us playing under that average on Saturday. I would love to be proven wrong. I agree that Cooley is a defensive coach. That being said his Providence teams haven't been that stout defensively yet, but That's probably on account of his inherited personnel. D efficiency under Cooley: 244th, 82nd, 111th, and 63rd this year. He did get Fairfield to 17th defensively in his last year. Dunn is interesting. He's one of 2 players on the team that can really score, and he racks up a ton of assists, but he turns it over nearly as much as he assists. TO rate of 27.6% (That's Mikaelesque) 4.4 turnovers per game on the season (7.3 assist/game) in BE play 26 assists, 19 turnovers. In last 2 games he has 14 Assists and 15 turnovers. He's only shooting 27% from 3. Whenever we're guarding him we need to give him space to prevent the drive whether in man to man or zone.

66 points seems to be the magic number for PC. They are undefeated when allowing under 66. PC did win one game where they gave up more, they beat Notre Dame 75-74. I absolutely loved last nights game. To be down 8 on the road and bench 3 starters and not sub out the entire 2nd half was a sight to see. Cooley is the man in Providence. Should be a great game on Saturday, and man is it nice to see this program rejuvenated under Cooley in this new league.
Also Chukwu is going to be a very nice player for PC over the next couple of years. He is much more skilled than I thought. He has not quite got that Ewing or Mutumbo chip on his shoulder but he starting to play like somethings bothering him so it's a good sign. He and Dunn won the game last night.

I know that it is overly-simplistic, but in my mind it almost does not matter who the Hoyas play. The outcome is going to be dictated by the Hoyas, who seem to play up to or down to the level of their competition. The talent level of the Hoyas this season should be sufficient to dominate an undermanned team like Marquette or Creighton or Charlotte. It should be sufficient to beat Butler and stay with Xavier on the road. Yet the Hoyas struggled for part or all of those games and in two instances lost.
Providence is a decent team, but by no means a team that the Hoyas cannot beat on the road. So now we wait to see which Hoyas show up, their concentration and energy level and their ability to adapt to what certainly will be another defense that will employ multiple looks to deny Smith any shots. I keep thinking that these are all learning experiences that will bear fruit in the next game or two. But the season is not that early anymore and at some point you have to sit back and say this is who we are and then develop gameplans on the assumption that the team has shown its strengths and weaknesses. I think that time is fast approaching and the onus will be on the coaches to adapt to the recurring strategy of denying Smith and DSR and daring others to step up. I am encouraged by the ongoing effort of JT III to do just that even within games, such as last night.

They have a lot of nice pieces, would've loved to see Bentil in a Hoya uniform. We need to come out and compete from the tip if we wanna win this one.

Gotta play zone here right. Track Henton obviously but the rest of the team is pretty weak from 3. Dunn is going to be hard to contain in Man Triangle and 2? The one thing that jumped out at me about last night's game is they really struggle to score outside Henton and Dunn. No one else on the roster worries me in the slightest. That said, those two are certainly good enough to win games by themselves. My fear is that as he's done so many times in the past, Thompson will refuse to gameplan for this specific opponent resulting in DSR getting torched by Dunn all game. Lindsey and Harris can score a bit but have been slumping horribly. I would play them in a straight zone with extra emphasis on tracking Henton. Seemed to work well for Marquette. Dunn you just have to limit penetration (easier said than done) he hasn’t really shown the ability to hurt you from the outside yet. Knocks on wood.

We must be all over Henton and cannot change our defense if they hit the first couple of threes. If Providence drains threes all game, then most likely they will win this game. We must not let Henton beat us and must rebound, including long boards on threes. Limit turnovers on offense and play reasonably smart. Important momentum/ swing game.

Looking at RPI ratings, will be good win for us. Also looking at RPI ratings, it will be really important to hold serve at home, and avoid losing to lower third teams.
One could argue that the most important games remaining for making the tournament are DePaul and Creighton. Since most of of the BE will likely be really even, it pretty much comes down to not losing to certain teams and how you do in the BE tournament (which might ultimately drive how the committee seeds all these 5-7 teams).

I cant believe it is coming up on a year that Louie's was shut down. PC will never be the same. Its a been tough year for PC bars, first Louies gets shut down and then what I knew as Clubbies when I went to PC was shutdown a couple of months ago. Those were the two major underage bars for PC students.

Providence favored by 3.5 in Vegas. In college basketball the homecourt is assigned a value but it can range from 2.5-6 points depending upon the crowd and the team's performance on its home court. The Hoyas have not exactly distinguished themselves lately on the road or at home and wins over the Indiana team and Florida look less impressive in hindsight than before.
The Friars have height in their lineup and should present a challenge inside much like Xavier did. Their outside shooting is streaky but can be effective. Really a tough challenge for the Hoyas and a win would be a real boost for tournament chances. In fact the game looks alot like the Xavier game to me, but hopefully not the outcome.

I was optimistic for the Xavier game, but not so much for this one, because of the way we've been playing. Hopefully I'll be wrong again.

Hope I'm wrong but this doesn't feel like a game this team wins. We've been trending in the wrong direction since New Years eve - our wins over the big east's 2 worst teams notwithstanding - and are now moving toward the bubble. To stay on the right side of it we need a few of these road wins so I hope we can start an upward trend this afternoon.

To stay on the right side of it we need a few of these road wins so I hope we can start an upward trend this afternoon. As long as we win games, how are we trending towards the bubble? Unlike the FBS system we don't really gain or lose points for style, especially among the top 100 or so teams. A win is a win, a loss is a loss and any loss at this point is not what we want. You could argue about bad losses being worse but all losses are bad IMO. We need to do whatever it takes to win this game, it doesn't have to be pretty, or easy, or going away, nothing else but a W.
