Some interesting stats from the game. We outrebounded SJU by seven, but were still outrebounded on the offensive glass 8-11. Josh got eight rbs, but was 1-6 from the floor; opposite his usual figures. Harrison was 1-12, another game in which we have completely neutralized his presence. Abekpa got only one block; this from the second leading shot blocker in the nation. And Moses' 5-6 from the FT.

That first half was this team's best basketball of the season, completely dominant and took the heart out of a conference foe. Defense was firing, everyone was active, almost every basket was the result of an assist; good to see this team is capable of that type of ball.
I knew the second half would be a slog, but those last 10 minutes were brutal. SJU keeping in their starters the whole game, JT3 not exactly using his bench and then things get chippy at the end. I am just glad no one got hurt or got into a scuffle that would affect the next game.
Well done Hoyas

I keep hearing Harrison is supposed to be good from an SJU guy at work, but the Hoyas have him on full lockdown. He does nothing against us and I enjoy every minute. Not surprised SJU outrebounded us on the offensive glass, they missed so many shots it was inevitable. Nice defense by the Hoyas.

Still continue to be baffled why JTIII does not give Cameron, Domingo and Hayes more game experience when we are up by 30 - Today, Cameron got 4 min, Hayes and Domingo 1. What is the downside to giving them more time?

Yeah, it's hard to make much of the stats in a game like that. The game was basically over 15 minutes in. I just wanted the last 25 minutes to tick away as fast as possible. If actually thought it would get closer, and am pleasantly surprised that both teams went at it as long as they did. I don't think we should worry to much about starters minutes. I'm sure 20 year old can handle 2 basketball games a week.

I guess they could have probably played more, but meh.

Stuck at work during the game. My attempt to record Chvotkin failed, hopefully my DVR doesn't.

Great game.
* As Nevada said, Bizarro Game for Josh. He's credited with six rebounds, though he may have had more. Some of those were kind of lucky, but several were in traffic. And it doesn't include the awkward half/no rebound early on. And then he goes an misses most of his shots. Random, and those will fall, but he has to start focusing more on his FTs. You can almost predict his misses by how much time he takes, if he falls back, etc.
* You can say the same for Jabril, who might be the only Hoya who had a below average game. Lots of sloppy play. I'd have love for him to make shots, and I like that he can drive, but he's gotten a bit sloppy recently with turnovers and offensive fouls. Luckily Aaron Bowen is pretty much the same player, so we're able to get that defense, driving, cutting somewhere else when Trawick has an off game.
* Aaron has formally transitioned into a solid contributor, which is great to see. Defending, rebounding, even made a three. Aside from missing free throws, it was almost a perfect game from his end.
* DSR isn't getting nearly enough credit. He was automatic when he had time to set and get through his whole shot. Even factoring in the four turnovers, he used less than 20 possessions and scored 31 plus three assists. That's fantastic and basically drove our offense all day. I know it doesn't look incredibly impressive, but it is.
* Hopkins has turned into a defensive beast, hasn't he? The box score says three blocks but I think they missed a couple AND he lost a couple of clean ones on crappy calls. He dominated the middle defensively. Smith and Hopkins together and Moses and Nate together makes a lot of sense, since in the former Hopkins can erase some of Smith's mistakes and in the latter, Nate can play the offensive center for Moses.
* Moses 5-6 from the line! That's huge for guy who I think opposing coaches just assume you can foul. I think we missed 3 front ends of the 1 and 1 -- Moses made it so our trips to the line in the single bonus weren't completed wasted.
* For all the commentary about how bad the defense is... we certainly don't give up a ton of points most of the time, right? The switching worked great this game, and until late, SJU was basically just taking a bunch of jump shots.

Agree SFHoya to all your points. I actually thought that Lubick's strong start at the offensive end was a real positive. Trawick did not play well but did play hard. Bowen should not be a subject for debate anymore. He has earned his minutes. I do understand the shorter bench given some poor play recently, but believe that Cameron has to find time in this rotation. Also my game balls would go to DSR and Hopkins.

Our starting five and rotation guys need as much time as possible, as much chemistry and continuity as possible - even if we are up 30

Always have been if its a mismatch, Jessie Sapp used to post up all the time. Thanks for the refresher...I did not remember Sapp posting up. I saw Bowen in the same spot against Depaul doing the same thing Trawick was doing in this game. Chris used to be pretty efficient at it.

DSR's 6 three point baskets fell just one short of Mark Tillmon's school record 7 back in 1990. And Austin's 7-9 against UNCA I think

Has anyone in this thread mentioned the 1982 GU v SJU game at the Garden? Chris Mullin was a freshman. SJU was ranked #9 and getting tons of coverage as the "darlings" of the NY media. GU arrived as serious underdogs despite having senior Sleepy Floyd and "unknown" freshman Pat Ewing. Patrick had been ranked the #1 HS recruit, but things were different in those days and he wasn't well-known yet. At any rate, GU came into MSG. Freshman Mullin was already being idolized. My old college pal Joe and I were at the game. And we could not BELIEVE what happened next. Patrick and GU proceeded to absolutely destroy a very good, top ten SJU team, and ran up a lead in the first half that reached 41-9, before eventually winning 72-42. I was reminded of that when I saw GU's lead at the end of today's first half: 42-16. Of course, the Johnnies were a lot better back in the day. Still, nice to see our Hoyas lay a smackdown on our old rivals. Well done Hoyas!

The Johnnies are what they are; non-shooters. Always have been.

Great game. Nice to have one sured up early. Pretty sure attendance was over 10k. DSR is a stud. I agree with board sentiments in FT shooting and not using the bench more than in the final minute. I like that this team has taken out Melvin and Harrison in consecutive games. Liking Bowen more and more each game. Love the twin towers hop and Moses combo. Starting to notice that Jabril doesn't even look at the basket in his pre free throw progression. Shocked by how bad SJU played today

Kansas State just got a big win at home against Oklahoma State. K State is better than they were at the start of the season, but our blow out may be helpful at selection time.

Always get a warm feeling when someone mentions the 1982 blowout at MSG. Was my first road game as a freshman and it was a complete blast. It also announced to the nation that we were very, very dangerous after a lackluster Great Alaska Shootout.

Harrison's M.O. is that if he either isn't the focus of the Johnnies offense the whole game or doesn't make his first couple of shots/gets foul calls, he pouts and disappears. When he's hitting shots, they feed him and he keeps shooting and getting after it. I can't recall a more off/on player. Sometimes, when he's pouting, he'll try once or twice during the game to get it going but, if it doesn't work out in the first shot or two, he disappears again. He even stops moving on offense. In short, he's really good when he's not really terrible.
