I don't think Kelly wants the administration to get more decisive about football. If they even took a slight interest in the sport, he would've been fired by now.

If you haven't noticed, we have quite a few things on our plate right now, and not enough money to do everything we want to do. So we have to prioritize, you see. And, well, frankly, you're just not a priority. For anyone. Well, maybe John Reagan. But that's about it.
Anyway, um, I'm terribly sorry, but we have an important meeting with Paul Pelosi in half an hour, so we're going to have to excuse ourselves. So, keep up the good work, boys! Not good, you say? Well...keep working! Once this Capital Campaign is over, and we build the IAC, and renovate the old Jesuit Residence into dorms, and we move the Public Policy folks downtown, and we renovate Lauinger... then we can have a talk about doing some more work on the MSF. Oh, and by that point, the listed tuition will be $95,000/year, but 85% of students will receive financial aid, and scholarships won't matter because anyone dumb enough to let their kid play college football and risk debilitating Repetitive Brain Injury surely won't be successful enough in life to not be getting the equivalent of a full ride in need-based aid anyway.

I think reality is starting to hit GTown in the face this season. The thing is, this is potentially "as good as it gets" as most PL schools only have one scholarship class this year. Did Kelly elaborate further on this at the luncheon? |

Coach Kelly's acknowledgement that GU is no longer able to recruit competitively with other PL school should be a wake up call to Mr. Reed and the GU administration.
While other programs have made commitments to facilities and scholarships, we have made a commitment to mediocrity, and this gap is only going to get worse over time.
Hiring a new head coach, as some suggest, is not the answer. On the contrary, I keep wondering why Coach Kelly isn't out looking for a better opportunity.
My congratulations to our seniors.

Yes, Problem of Dog, my first post.
There are opportunities other than head coaching. He was successful elsewhere in capacities other than head coach. An assistant, or coordinator at most programs, is a better opportunity than head coach at GU.
My point, under current circumstances, there is no future at GU, for Coach Kelly or anyone else, without a commitment by the University and its alumni to provide the resources to be competitive.

Coach Kelly is not the problem unless you maintain that he should coach as well as others with "one hand tied behind his back "......lets give the man a fair analysis,,,, realty of the situation is finally beginning to set in.........the patient has a serious disease and he ( it ) needs some damn good medication to give it a chance to breathe.

He's not being held to the same standard as others, he would've been fired years ago at Lafayette or Lehigh. And the school sells itself in so many ways, regardless of what you think of the facilities and funding, that it's not like we've been getting bottom of the barrel talent. So let's not make the scholarship excuse for Kelly's current and past failures. Maybe in a few years he can fall back on that one. |

Maybe it's not quite the divide between say Georgetown and Villanova, Richmond and W&M but each year from here on in it will be approaching that. As I've said in other threads here, GTown joined the PL at a very opportune time. The league has been down overall in the 21st Century and the Hoyas could kind of get away with what they've been doing but that era is quickly coming to a close. Without scholarships, Georgetown will be in the basement by a good stretch year-in, year-out moving forward. |

Other than men's basketball and soccer, many Georgetown team budgets have been flat for recent years. I'm not sure that is a "commitment to mediocrity" inasmuch as it is an attempt to control direct costs. It's important to remember the environment the PL is in--other than basketball, it awarded almost no scholarships at all before 2011 and was able to drive recruiting through packaged athletic aid. That type of aid is more easily convertible to scholarships than the general financial aid Georgetown uses for its sports. Georgetown has also made scholarship commitments to sports emphasized within the Big East that the PL does not, such as track, lacrosse, and soccer. Re #2, Kelly was looking for a better opportunity after the 2011 season--remember, he was among the finalists for the Yale job that went to Tony Reno. It'a part of the coaching profession that an coach will always consider a step up no matter how treacherous, otherwise, he may not get that chance again. Example: Phil Bennett, a defensive coordinator at places like LSU, Texas A&M, Pitt, and most recently Baylor, took a chance as head coach at SMU, went 19-52, was fired, and went bask to becoming an assistant coach. Or this example: the other candidate publicly disclosed for the Georgetown job in 2005 was Brian White, the former Harvard QB who was then the offensive coordinator at Wisconsin. So why would the OC at Wisconsin want to coach at Georgetown? Well he did, but it didn't work out and he's never got a head coaching job since. While White makes a very good salary as the running backs coach at Florida, his job prospects each year depend on the record of his head coach and that's an uncertain career path. |

The administration at the university declined to go along with the rest of the league in instituting merit-based scholarships beginning with the [2013] recruiting class. Wow, Problem With Dog, over 500 negative, sarcastic posts.
Coach Kelly is not the underlying problem. Georgetown cannot overcome its problems just because We Are Georgetown. GU can no longer just sell itself.
We need leadership, direction and a commitment from the administration and the alumni. Once we have that, then we can figure out who best to be our head coach.
Coach Kelly's comments concerning not being able to recruit on a level playing field illustrates his frustration with the program, and a clean break from the administration's silence concerning the future direction of the program.
I would not be surprised if Coach left for greener pastures, even if his new position was not Head Coach.

Hey ole bro Big Dog, I have an Italian name which clearly makes me a non-Kelly, I`m a retired MD and 85 years old but not the least senile and I can still realize the obvious when I have to confront it......the fact of the matter is (as we of G`town in the 40s used to say), its time for us as a class university to " poop or get off the pot ! " regarding football scholarships. Personally I hope we "poop", i.e. at least a few scollies....
