Wow. His request was originally rejected. Per Rutger's website he is listed as a sophomore this year. Could he have been considered a second semester freshman if he didn't suit up until the second semester? Would he have been a sophomore regardless so, choose to play now? Same situation because of mid-season transfer but, his brother & father passed away. He wanted to be closer to home for his mother and granted immediate eligibility.

bump
Less than a week until practice starts and still no word on Josh Smith? I know he def won't be eligible this semester anyway, but shouldn't we be hearing soon?

He practices regardless so practice has nothing to do with waiver apps. If you go back a handful of pages you can follow a discussion that made it clear that his app would probably go in in October.

We'll know before November 8th that's the first time it matters.

Unless something wacky happens, we also know that at worst, he'll likely be playing on December 21 against Kansas, since without a waiver, he would definitely be eligible then. The only way that would not happen is if Smith waits until 2014-2015 to play out his last full year, but there's no indication Smith would do that.

The delay for waivers from the NCAA is now down to about 9 days according to John Infante. Now, thats a lot of days, but that down from like months earlier this year. So a decision should be made soon. Whether we hear about it something else entirely.

I presume that the backlog is short right now because the flood of basketball-related waiver requests has not yet happened.

There was talk in late July or early August from the NCAA saying they were only working on football apps so they could finish before the season started (well they actually said fall sports, but we all know what that means). So I presume that a lot of the back up was being caused by CBB app and other winter sports apps. Now whether Gtown has submitted and application yet or not is up in the air.

Another quote-- "He said he has applied for a waiver to play immediately and skip the second semester portion of his year in residence. Thompson confirmed the waiver has been sent into the NCAA. "My argument is that I only played in six games so why should I lose a whole year?" Smith said. "We've done everything we can now. We're waiting for the NCAA."" Katz article way back when said he/GU had already submitted the waiver request to play this fall.

From a competition standpoint, it is better not to have any news on this. JTIII would rather have early season opponents wondering whether to prepare for Hoyas with Smith or not - which would probably mean more/wasted work for them since they'd likely do both. So I'm OK not knowing until the last minute as a fan.

How come Smith hasn't earned a spot in the "Meet the Team" links on the hoyasaxa.com main page? I mean, he is on the roster and Tyler Adams has a link, why not the Big Guy?
The roster links at GUHoyas.com were just updated and I'll add them this evening. --Admin

Wow. They normally don't hype players. His improvement may be legit.

Thanks for the link. I'm excited about Josh coming in, hopefully the waiver will be granted. Glad to see Katz/ESPN on campus, even after realignment. Interesting that he mentioned Lubick playing against him in practice, more signs that Nate will play some 5? Maybe not but we all know Nate's skill as a post defender and practice against a skilled/sized big such as Josh can only help. Finally, where was that clip shot? Didn't look like McDonough lobby and actually had decent acoustics!

Something I have not heard discussed much on this board is, what if things get turned around for Josh Smith? What would this mean for the Georgetown program? What would it mean for JT-3? I would think that there is a lot riding on the success, or the lack thereof, of Josh, given his tumultuous time at UCLA. I know JT-3 likes to couch his potential in words like "It is up to Josh" and so forth, but the truth of the matter is this kid can end up paying huge dividends for all involved. I, for one, just hope and pray that Josh can end our drought in Final Four tournament play.
